Too little too late. Atari should have jumped on the Famicom distribution license when they had the chance but Jack Tamriel gonna Jack Tamriel

It was release way, way after it was intended to be and just couldn't compete with the NES. The gimped sound didn't help either. Ballblazer alone is worth buying one for though.

7800 originally used an old style joystick with two side buttons. Only the later European consoles were shipped with NES/SMS style gamepads like in OP's picture.

In an alternate universe, the Atari Entertaiment System would have been a flop, with those shit controllers that emulate a shit tv controller, you know the ones, and those weird peripherals like the audio casette, plus since it was still gonna be a top loader..........

Nintendo took a risk, but it paid off.

>have your own next gen console in the works
>major foreign competitor comes to you with offer to distribute their console in the west
>lead them by the nose until the last second
>drop out of the deal literally on the day you're supposed to sign the contract
>set Nintendo back years on their western release while your console dominates the market

Technically it was a brilliant plan up until the last step, since Atari missed their target release date by like, years while Nintendo was barely set back at all and easily beat them to market. By the time the 7800 released, NES already owned the western gaming market.

>uncomfortable to hold
>gigantic buttons that have to be pushed way in before activating
>weird stiff joystick

Nah. It was a step backwards from the original Atari joysticks which were at least passable when placed on a desk. They basically just took the Colecovision controller, removed the numpad, and Atari-fied the aesthetics.

I mean, perfecting gaming controllers was an iterative process, but those were just a lazy clone.

It had shit sound. The 5200 had a lot of problems but it was a good idea to synergize with their 8 bit line. 7800 was a step backwards in some ways and of course it came out way too late.

OP I'm all for having a 7800 thread but why you gotta use the same shit every time?

I wish more devs had gotten on board with it, I think just some ports of more current arcade games from 1984-1986 would have helped it out immensely. But by that time all the American third parties were on the home computer train pretty hard and the fact that the system never got anything more than a test launch meant it wasn't worth making games for it. Had it actually gotten a nationwide release it's possible some studios like Sierra and Imagic may have taken an interest and breathed some serious life into the library while exploring the capabilities of the system. This may have given it some of the footing and market penetration it would have needed to take on the NES by the time it rolled around, but the delay in its launch and the lack of any third support that came with that meant it never got to live up to its potential.

It doesn't matter when it was announced if it wasn't available until years later and the competition beat them to market. The 7800 never sold well, and it certainly was never more popular than the NES.

And every few weeks I will tell you the only game worth having a 7800 for is Midnight Mutants

>> No.4666169

>>4665310
Because by the time it was released it was very much playing "me too" status to the NES and it launched with barely any games (and the ones it did have were arcade ports from 1980-1983.) If the launch hadn't been delayed due to Atari not paying the guys who designed the console it might have gotten some grounding in the American market and had some other devs diving into what the system could actually do but of course that didn't happen.

If only the 7800 had been released in 1984!
And why didn't it get any ports of Atari 8 bit/16 bit games?

>> No.4667265

>>4667046
It really only got ballblazer. There were a couple ports planned that never saw the light of day (like rescue on fractalus) and a few games that got released on both systems as well as the 2600 (dark chambers and desert falcon) but overall it didn't really get any ports that would have utilized its hardware to make what would have been the best versions of the games. You only started to see the stuff that really showed what the machine was capable towards the end of its life with games like fatal run, midnight mutants and commando. Personally I think it coukd have had games on par with the C64 and even the NES if Atari had actually invested the energy into it, but supporting the 7800, 2600, XE, ST and later Lynx all at once spread Atari too thin.

the early games look better on the 7800 but they delayed it so much that it was competing with 3rd generation nes titles and the master system, like usually these failed systems failed because of bad decisions rather than quality
