Have any employees talked about what it was like working at square before and after the merger?

Probably not.....seems like these Japanese company's are so private.

I'm pretty sure Sakaguchi has talked about it a little in some interviews. He's always been one of the more outspoken Japanese

Probably like any other merger. A lot of people lose jobs through redundancy and everyone ends up reporting to everyone else. This at a time when square was reeling from their fucked up movie production and people were performing career sepukku.

I think it's pretty telling that almost every Square property is either dead or changed for the worst nowadays, whereas the one thing that the company still puts out that is reliably great is Dragon Quest.

The Enix side catalogue was hit far harder. Only Star Ocean and poor ports of Valkyrie Profile games remain. No more publishing for smaller developers. One telling detail is how Enix wanted Fullmetal Alchemist PS2 to be the start of a new series of quality licensed games and not only those long-term plans got the grinder, but the game itself barely saw release.

Dragon Quest was and still is a joint operation between many studios and parties, and is a cash cow these parties are overprotective of, not unlike Pokemon.
Valkyrie Profile (Enix) and Front Mission/Parasite Eve (Squaresoft) are also not a single developer, but after the merger Squeenix shat the bed with all of those relationships leading to dead series and spiritual successors left and right.

And no one of you all heartless faggots remember Taito, which Square Enix absorbed and wasted its proprieties completely. Their very first act was to cancel the license for a Pocky and Rocky game by a third party developer (granted, Taito was whoring it to the likes of Altron for the GBA game), but then even series like Bubble Bobble and Bust a Move are wasted, and they didn't even deign bringing out that Lufia 2 reimagining as a budget action RPG outside Japan by themselves. Then they were never heard of again aside from smartphone shovelware.

It's not Wada either, it's a whole corporate mindset.

Hey there is a new Densha De Go out, some Taito properties are going somewhere

>> No.4659625

Not at all. The only reason why they merged was because Spirits Within nearly bankrupted squaresoft.

>> No.4659765

>>4658809
It was Square's fault. Specifically Sakaguchi's misguided foray into filmmaking with Final Fantasy:The Spirits Within.

It's interesting to speculate about what might have happened but already the trends were shifting. Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu teamed up for Lost Odyssey, which certainly "feels" a lot more like the classic FF games, but still did not do very well.

I love the classic FFs up to IX which is a total masterpiece. X was the 1st title released after they merged and the beginning of the series turning to shit. XII may have been decent, but that's all. So, judging by the only series published by them that I actually played, it was a huge mistake

>X was the 1st title released after they merged
Nah. Even X-2 was released in Japan before the merge. X being a turning point of a kind definitely is true, though.

Square went down before they merged with Enix. Two of their worst games, The Bouncer and Final Fantasy X-2, were made before the merger with Enix. If anything, the Enix portion is the part of Square-Enix that actually is making good games. Final Fantasy started going down the drain with X-2, but Dragon Quest does seem to keep strong even with XI. Most of the key members that made Square what it was back in the NES-Early PlayStation days are no longer at Square-Enix. Most of the key members who made Enix what it was back in the day are still at Square-Enix. They are mostly working on the various Dragon Quest games. Basically, don't blame Enix for Square-Enix being sucky.

SaGa Scarlet Grace was damn great. All hail Kawazu's masterful game design.
