Good luck using that one in court, kiddo. Even digging through someone's trash is theft and the law is enforced as such, you know? Actually, as long as it's on the curb and/or in a designated zone, it isn't.

>> No.4656649

Nope, still is. Ownership is not relinquished until it's picked up by garbage collection as per the contract you enter with the waste disposal service. Your property is your property regardless of where it is until you willfully transfer ownership. Your car parked on the street is still your car. The cash in your wallet dropped in a parking lot is still your cash. The trash in your trashcan on the curb is still your trash.

My local K-Mart (rip) had an Oddworld Abe's Odyssey Strategy guide magazine thing that I tucked away behind some other magazines in the magazine rack and I would just look at it every time I went there. Seriously from the time I was like 6 until I was 16 every time I went back there I'd find that strategy guide. I never bought it because I didn't want to end the streak but damn I wish I had.

Also, when I was 16 (2012) they were getting rid of most of their vidya stock and had a bin out of games. I got Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2 for gamecube for $25 total. Shit was so cash.

this is obviously horseshit, so I'm going to tell a real story. the summer after I graduated high school back in 2010 I was working as a cart bitch at the local Kmart. this was in Michigan, which is Kmart central, and the store I was working at had been around since the seventies. however, the recession fucked everything as you may remember, and the store was on life support at that point. it would shutdown a few years later, just like almost every other Kmart.

according to the one manager I was cool with there, corporate was doing everything they could think of to get back into the green. the night crew was constantly having to move shelves around and rearrange departments in an attempt to modernize the shopping experience, a task which would prove futile. this in turn made stocking a pain in the ass, as you could come in one morning to find a completely new set of instructions for where to put what. Kmart was really struggling at that point, and you could feel it in the store itself.

anyway, one slow morning there wasn't really anything for me to do, and the other managers were getting ready to fire me at that point. they asked me to go around the store and sweep, which was just a "get the fuck out of my face right now" kind of job. I was ready to not work there at that point as well, so I was moving around the store lackadaisically. the toy section was in the corner of the store, and I noticed that the space between some of the shelves there was open. normally there are kiosks at the end of shelf aisles to close off the opening, but the night crew must have moved it and forgotten to replace it.

the space was really narrow and I couldn't really see inside, so I stuck my broom in and started pulling out dust bunnies. on maybe the third pass over, I hooked onto something heavier and pulled it ahead a little before it got stuck. I get down on my knees and stick my arm in and pull out a brand new, factory sealed, yellow Gameboy Color. the plastic wrap was a little beat up, and it was covered in dust, but it was still amazing to look at and hold in my hands, like a forgotten relic of my childhood. I'm not completely sure how it got there and remained undiscovered for what might have been a decade, but my guess is that it somehow got thrown between the shelves back when the video games were kept in the toy aisle, and the shelves must have stayed in that same exact spot since then.

the price tag on it was from an older barcode system than the one we were using, and the GBC had obviously long been discontinued at that point, so I wasn't sure what to do with it. I knew if I took it to a manager it was going to get wasted, either thrown away, sent to a warehouse, or pocketed by the fucker himself. I really considered putting it back and letting it sit in the darkness until the store close. but in the end I just stole it. I put it in my dustpan, then in a bag with some shredded paper, and finally outside, where I hid it until I could throw it in my car during my break. I got fired a few weeks later because I was just a bad worker in general, but as far as I know, nobody knew about the GBC. I took it with me to college when I left that Autumn, and then traded it for oxycodone in 2013. I really regret doing that. sometimes when I visit my parents I drive out by that Kmart. the store is closed and abandoned now, but the sign is still hung up over the entrance.

Now this I believe... I worked in retail alot in my 20s and did see shit similar to this... Not video game related stuff but other merch that was long since discontinued that would get knocked back behind, under or inside shelving and would be found later when the store would be rearranged or whatever. You did the right thing as it surely would have been trashed or taken by your boss.

You shouldn't have traded it for oxys though. I love pain killers too but that's a real shame.

I remember seeing an entire case of sealed NES games, mostly original runs of Metroid and Kid Icarus they never sold, along with a few of the black label launch games. What I'm really kicking myself for not picking up were all the copies of DuckTales 2 I could have had for $5 a pop.

Does anyone remember when KMart briefly dabbled as a low cost dial-up ISP? Apparently its still around with Netzero. Accelerated dialup for only $27.95 a month!
