Is PC-Engine a good platform to play today or just a weaboo trap?

HuCard Library = lots of fun if you like arcade style games and shmups, also weird SEGA ports
Super CD-ROM Library = Weeaboo trap
Get a flashcart or Super SD System, do not fall into the money hole that is the PC Engine.

It’s a more affordable version of the TG16 with a better library, if with a language barrier. Be warned that prices still rack up fast if you’re going more esoteric games and hardware. If you want the most stuff to play with the smallest aggregate cost, take the setup recommended in >>4645447

Yes, it’ll cost more upfront than getting even the vaunted Duo-R or Duo-RX, but it’ll let you play all but 7 games with a vanilla PCE and comes with built in composite output.

If you’re big on playing physical games, get the aforementioned Duo-R/-RX as long as you can verify the caps are working. It’s the sturdiest CD-playing PCE setup and will save you money on peripherals like an Arcade Card.

On my end, I actually have a question for you lurking PCE owners as someone looking to flesh out my portable /vr/ collection. Is a PCE GT a worthwhile purchase if it can be had recapped and in working condition for under original MSRP? Or are there too many other build issues / portability not being worth sacrificing CD playback for that to be a worthy purchase?

Do NOT support Neo-Geo store.
They are 100% profit driven, and are selling the device for 5x its build cost.

Well of course they're profit driven, what else would they be?
I don't disagree that selling something at that much of a markup to an extremely niche community is pretty lame though. One could get a chinese clone of the Turbo EverDrive now. I have a 'before they got cloned' official TED I can mostly recommend.

I love the PC Engine. The games have the simple pick up and play quality of 8-bit stuff with graphics almost comparable to the genesis. It really does play like a stopgap between the 8 and 16 bit eras and I love that.

Also if you go for a JP console and loose hucards things are still very affordable.
