Does anyone know if the format of a Quake 2 BSP on the N64 and Playstation is the same as the one on the PC? I suppose that question would extend to any 90's PC fps from that era that also got a console port (Duke Nukem 64/Total Meltdown, Doom 64, Hexen, Quake 64, etc.).

Something that has interested me is the games lobotomy put to the Saturn. I found an interview somewhere that said they used their own format, and had a tool that could convert duke nukem maps, but those maps and the quake maps still had to be greatly modified to work.

I'm learning programming, and i'd like to make a "simple" software renderer for a 3D space. The issue that I have had is finding tutorials that have a practical approach instead of a theoretical one.

The problem is that you're still assuming I'm this boogeyman of yours, stop acting like a child and prove your claims using the archive like I suggested in the other post. What boogeyman and hypocrisy is there? What does it matter that the IP count increases?
>the fact that your only defense against these perceived shitposters you enjoy replying to so much is to accuse them of crossboarding
Tell me with a straight face that this post >>4639374 doesn't scream "I'm not from here", you can't. The post made it clear that he's baffled at how moral people in this thread are, compared to other boards, and all the other replies to that post agree. Logic dictates that he's indeed a crossboarder, he made it pretty clear himself. You're being dishonest and biased if you claim otherwise.
>that you derail threads more often than those people you intend to call out?
I don't recall accusing people of derailing the thread? Maybe because I'm not this boogeyman of yours?

/vr/oom's attitude of "Don't be abrasive and rude for no reason" I think is fair, this place doesn't have to be shit.

If I wanted shit threads about Doom I would go to /v/.

this is a small/medium sized map with around 100 monsters. it is highly detailed - i can see why you burnt yourself out making it! i managed to max it on the third attempt. first time i reached the yellow key but ran out of health in the trap. second time i was too impatient with the four mancubi. third time i got fed up and examined the map in an editor to see what was ahead. overall my criticisms would be (a) too dark, can't see what i'm fighting (b) not enough health / little room for error (c) too cramped, bumping into bits of architecture all the time.

Ion Maiden Patch 1 is out. If you got it on Steam, the update is automatic as usual. If you got it from 3DR, you'll be sent a download link.

Important Notes:
User data is now stored in "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Ion Maiden Preview Campaign" on Windows and "~/.config/maiden" on Linux.
The save format version number has been bumped, meaning your old saves will no longer work. This may happen repeatedly during the Early Access period.

- Overall Performance Boosts!
- An occasional crash when performing random actions, including flipping lightswitches, has been fixed.
- A bug that would cause the player to sometimes switch to the wrong game mode when loading a game has been fixed.
- Optimizations to the game world logic have been made to improve performance in some circumstances and shrink savegame file sizes.
- Mouse aiming has been reworked to allow much greater precision of movement.
- The mouse axis scale sliders can now go all the way to zero.
- New "save setup" menu, allowing autosaves to be disabled and a limit to be set on the maximum number of autosaves to keep at any one time.
- Savegames can now be deleted with the Delete key.
- Keyboard bindings for aiming up, down, and returning the view to the center can now be configured.
- A key or button can now be assigned to switch to the player's previously selected weapon.
- The sizes and brightness of certain pickup items have been increased
- Armor fragments are now more visible.
- Awkward delay after SMG reload has been fixed.
- The easiest skill level should now be easier, and the hardest should now be harder
- Volume slider no longer treats 50% as 0%

Can someone please help me with this. I'm trying to make a wad for Doom 2. If I don't use a zdoom mapinfo file, the sky works fine (shows the cloudy sky in level 1). If I do use a mapinfo file, I need to define the sky or else the ceiling F_Sky1 just show up as checkerboards. However, if I define Sky1 as F_Sky1, the mountain texture shows up instead of the cloudy texture, and it's all tiled and fucked up (in OpenGL, not even looking up). But I looked and can't find what the other skies are named. How do I get it to simply show the cloudy sky in map01?

I know it all too well, anon. It has a few neat moments but even on the initial playthrough I was haunted by those 2009 leaks outlining the games story and encounters. Even the snippets Jace Hall showed. DNF will always be the story of what could have been, rather than the game it became.

That said, we're 7 years removed from launch, the pain of disappointment washed over by litigation between 3DR and GBX, and the fear that I may never see another Duke game in my time. Makes me look back kind of nostalgically on the never-say-never hype.

that J2ME emulator is a such a neat and precious little piece of tech.

not only can I play these fantastic vintage mobile games in a superior mobile OS now, but I'm no longer limited by screen resolution/rendering/framerate issues or having to purchase a new (old) phone altogether just to play them again.

I recently 100%ed the first Doom RPG for the first time in almost 10 years since having last played it. such a charming and nostalgic little game, still holds up incredibly well today imo. I don't even care about how easy it is overall (I'm aware the second game is a total ramp up difficulty wise by comparison), I would blast through it time and again as many occasions as time allowed it. it's so wacky and kind-hearted and unique, I'm glad Metadoom manages to keep hold of its essence in a way.

Doom has the more distinctive and interesting art style. It's more colorful and everything is balanced between comic book cartoonyness and heavy metal grit and fantasy.

If you want to see Doom looking bad, just look at any Doom wad that tries to portray a realistic urban environment like those in Duke.

Duke would've looked a lot better than Doom had 3D realms had the sense to do something more fantastical in their texture art. The same problem plagues all of the build engine games. It's like they took the engine's ability to fill levels with interactivity as a reason to make the games look as much like the real world as they could.

The saddest thing is that it looks like Ion Maiden is going to follow the build engine trope of basing an entire game around a single psuedorealistic aesthetic.

I don't understand the question.

Ketchup is a mod for GZDoom (a sourceport), it gives you some of the flashy blood and gore effects of Brutal Doom, without you having to play Brutal Doom.

Chocolate Doom is a sourceport, what it does is to perfectly emulate the behavior of the original .exe (including the low resolutions, engine quirks, bugs and limitations). The purpose is to run the game in it's original state on modern systems, without the need for a DosBox setup or anything.

Odamex is something I actually don't have any experience with, but from my recollection, it's a sourceport intended for competitive multiplayer. I almost never see it mentioned anywhere ever. I think it's based on Boom, but someone will correct me.

I don't see how they compare with each other at all, the first isn't a sourceport at all, but a mod (unless there's a new sourceport I've never heard about), the second is basically a compatibility utility for the original game, it doesn't actually put anything new on the table.
I guess maybe Odamex has some features which the original game lacks? Maybe some features which haven't been put in GZDoom yet?

Skulltag hasn't been updated in years, it probably won't properly work with most modern mods (if that's something that interests you).
It's successor is Zandronum, it does everything Skulltag does, but it's actually updated more (it doesn't run ZScript yet, I think, so a few particularly flashy mods won't work with it).

I have seen them die for good though, and it doesn't seem linked to the damage or weapon I was using, because grenades and overloaded super shotgun blasts weren't doing the job.

Because Ultimate was just a small bonus that only some of the guys put together for the first proper retail release of Doom, and to advertise Doom 2.
John Carmack was busy working on the engine for Quake, he had virtually no hand in Thy Flesh Consumed.

I don't think they had intended to put another monster together, Adrian was probably busy with Quake things, and wasn't going to sketch something up, much less sculpt it in clay (a process they abandoned early), nor where they gonna hit up Punchatz for just one more latex and steel model (and Punchatz might have been busy with Rise Of The Triad at the time).

It would have been cool if they did a new boss monster, but they weren't going to. There was no new monsters for Final Doom either, even if that would also have been cool.

well, for starters, they have the ability to revive monsters without ever needing to close in on them, oftentimes even doing it without needing to be in the same room. ALSO THEY DO IT IMMEDIATELY AS SOON AS THEY HIT 0 HP, AND THEY REVIVE OTHER ARCHVILES TOO.

I wish I was making this shit up. if there's an archvile in the vicinity, you're fucked. it's as simple as that. get ready to fight the same enemy 20 times.

also they can hit you from literally anywhere, and the BFG tracers somehow fail to recognize him if placed on very specific quadrants on the player's viewfield. say you're facing a pack of monsters and he's behind and to the right of an imp that's right in front of you. you fire the BFG, he takes 0 DMG some fucking how.

I'm still trying to hit that sweet spot between leaving everything at STARTAN and detailing it fully during early geometry/layout work. It helps to texture flats and sidedefs so you're hit with a basic visual of how it'll look but little features can usually wait.

Who is that guy (German I think) who's known for making really detailed maps? He wrote a long post, on realm667 perhaps, about his styling guide. I must have forgotten to bookmark it.

What would be the best term to refer to Doom-likes? I'm not talking about "FPS" in general, but the exact subgenre of games that play like Doom (Doom, Heretic, the Build games...)

I usually use "90s FPS" but that's too broad including from FPS-RPG blends like Hexen, Strife, Thief, Deus Ex... to purely MP-FPS like UT or Quake 3. Also "90s FPS" would exclude things like Ion Maiden.

Sometimes I use "old school FPS" or "classic FPS" but that's too vague and a lot of people would consider things like Serious Sam or Half-life which are very different.

Finally "Doom-like" or "Doom clone" doesn't work because it has been used as a synonym for just "FPS" which makes it waaaay too inclusive in people's minds.

>Quake, Ion Maiden
I'd want those games to be included in the term. There are differences, Quake is 3D and Ion Maiden/Build games have more realism over Doom's abstraction, but the gameplay is still very much Doom for those games. Engine shouldn't be a factor here.

>Unreal, Half-life
Those start to distant themselves from Doom's gameplay. Less action/fighting, more plot/exploration/atmosphere. I'd consider those a different style of game that I wouldn't want included in the term.

Anyway guess there's no term to define the subgroup of games that play exactly or extremely close to Doom, at least not a precise and short one everyone would agree on.

Thanks for your attention anyway.

Maybe this is the wrong place to do this, but anyway.
I am playing Amid Evil and the texture shimmering is utterly horrendous. I know it's supposed to be "crisp and clear retro" but very often it makes some details and enemies indistinguishable from the scenery because they all blend into a shimmering mess.
Case in point: notice the crescent above the archway in the provided screenshots., Above is taken raw, the bottom is with TAA.
This wouldve been much better solved with proper mipmapping and anisotropy, but Amid Evil does not have those, and AA blurs things out too much and is not a proper solution.
So the choice is either end up with image looking shitty in one way, or an image looking shitty in a different way, and I'm not fine with either.

Does /vr/ have any doom servers going ? some deathmatch or CTF would be cool

Are there any good wads that have a high focus on hell levels? I love em' and I have played Doom 1 and 2 too many times at this point.

Bonus question for bonus points; is there a wad that is like Dante's inferno?

Speaking of Extermination Day, how is it? It's probably the only thing General Leeroy 7 has worked on in the last decade besides Dural Foom.

Good, worth playing, goes well with its parent mod, city levels are particularly good, also the map where you storm a hell castle with 500 friendly marines and tanks is great

Still unfinished, current builds only works with Brutal Doom (he promised a vanilla-compatible version after it is finished), on his twitter he has been talking a lot about tanks and maps taking place in Los Angeles.

any cool single player horde maps you guys can recommend ? Reelism is fun but eh I am bored of it

Recently played this version, the difficulty change with the mancubus was better. I thought the vines added to the map and had a pretty good trap in it. Overall pretty good map with a nice aesthetic.

that is where the original name for arena shooters was used, but now people are so fucking lost on what arena shooters means that they call TF2, OW, and shit like Fortnite an arena shooter, so now we have to use the term, "Old School FPS," or something like "90-s era like FPS," so everyone will actually understand. OR you can be a fucking normal person and just say the game is like Doom, or like Quake, or like Duke 3D, or something.

TLDR
Just speak more gooder and people will get you more better.

like >>4644073 says they dont have a cooldown for resurrecting fallen enemies so they abuse the shit out of it and they do it instantly too. its grape jelly on spaghetti fucking retarded. i'm on the first hell level and pretty much any encounter is nearly unwinnable thanks to them.

nevermind the fact that doomguy is mentally disabled apparently. he continuously misses rockets, BFG shots and fucking c h a i n s a w s w i p e s on monsters standing right in front of him. all despite sitting at 99 accuracy.
