What are some of the most obscure japanese games to ever be released on SNES/Genesis/PS1/N64/Saturn/Dreamcast and PS2?

I don't mean things like Clock Tower,Donpachi and LSD.

I mean some real obscure shit that is not even popular in Japan,it doesn't have to be good.

Probably that 2D platformer on the PS1 with a Mode 7-like room tilting starring a pizza delivery girl in a post apocalyptic world.

oh man i love this kind of stuff
there's already a thread up about the simple series, i'd recommend checking out that and the superlite series.
another fun thing to do is to go through wikipedia's lists of [console] games and google games that don't have articles
and then there's games that have literally no footage on the internet, i don't even think there's a rom of marby baby story on the surface web
i think unstack was like this too before eceleb made a video on it

I remember some anon talked about this half a year ago, it seemed a really original and cute RPG. I have never seen it mentioned again so I guess that makes it really obscure.

Athena: Awakening from the Ordinary Life is an adventure for the Playstation. The Year 2000, scientists find neutronium deep inside the Earth. All kinds of technology are made from it: including long extinct species brought back to life. But technology and animals are not the only thing to be effected by neutronium. Meet Athena an ordinary high school girl. When her friend Rika forgets her tickets to the aquarium, Athena has a vision to as where they are located. Over the course of the next few days Athena develops more & more psychic powers. The main gameplay is like a typical fixed camera survival horror game. The main game mechanic is Athen's psychic ability, which can range from using psychometry to find hidden items, telepathy to read people minds & find important clues, to psychic barriers so that she can defend herself from attack. The way this works is that you are given a certain pattern, similar to an EKG reading and you have to hit Square or Triangle at the right time to activate the ability. If you fail, you lose health. If you lose all your health, you die. The main problem with the game is that if you are not really good at Japanese you are going to miss A LOT of the story. All the FMV cutscenes, besides the intro, are in Japanese. The main problem is the in-game cutscenes; they use text to relay the story but the dialogue is set on a timer, so sometimes 2 words could be displayed for 5 seconds, and an entire complex sentences could on be displayed for 1 second. I'm am fluent in Japanese and even I had a hard time sometimes picking up what they were saying. Also because of the lack of action, especially in the beginning, and a lot of backtracking many people will find this game really boring. Once you get halfway through the game though it really picks up. I'd say if you're Japanese is good, or you just don't care about the story, then at least give it a play.

Majotachi no Nemuri is a sound novel for the SFC (later updated for the PSX); written by acclaimed Japanese mystery and horror writer Akakawa Jirou. You play as Toshio, an everyday salaryman. When at work one day, you get a strange phone call from a women asking you to help her because she is going to be killed. The next day you read in the newspaper that you're first love from childhood, Yoriko, committed suicide. You have a flashback to your elementary school day, when you last saw her and you promised to marry her. You decided that the phone call was Yoriko, and after going to her funeral, you go to the small village that she was teaching at to investigate. Little do you know, there is a much more mysterious past to this village than you think. The game plays like you're typical sound novel of the time; meaning that you read us to a certain point and then you get 2-4 options as to how you want to progress the story. During your first playthrough you are going to be limited to your options, but the more you play the game the more options open up. The game is pretty straight forward, and it is very similar to Otogirisou in that there is no dead end/bad ending. (Thank God this would be changed with another later Akagawa game, Yasoukyoku). I would say that for the most part the first two endings that you can choose from your first playthrough are the best. The rest are usually pretty campy or outright stupid (aliens? bombings in a school?). This is probably one of the middle level (quality) sound novels as far as the story goes. As terms of variety of outcomes and writing quality, I would say you are better off with Kamaitachi no Yoru.

Maria: Kimitachi no Umareta Wake is an adventure game for the PSX. You play as a doctor in a hospital who is charged with taking care of a young girl Maria, who had tried to commit suicide. Through several psychological meetings with her you discover that she is possessed by three spirits of Egyptian dieties: Isis, Set and Osiris. You also discover that there much more to her background than just a mental disturbance, in a plot that deals with murder, trauma, lies and mythology. The game is broken into 2 different play styles, and adventure style where you investigate Maria's house which is similar to Mansion of the Hidden Souls or Lunacy, and a visual novel type where you have long conversations with different characters and you can make choices that effect the ending and story line. What is really cool about this game is the large amount of fully animated 3D polygonal cut scenes that are fully voice acted. This was actually one of my favorite parts of the game as they are very well done for the time that they were released. There is one part in the game where you have to go over all the information that you learned from maria and your investigation and this will decide which of the endings that you get. Also, like the other game Majotachi no Nemuri, your first playthrough only has 2 different endings that you can get and consecutive playthroughs lead to more endings. There is a sequel for this game but I haven't played it yet, but if it's anything like this game it should be great. I would say that a basic understanding of Japanese can get you through this game, but there are a lot of medical terms in the game so you might want to have a dictionary on hand.

If you or anyone is interested I have started preparation on a Youtube channel where I play and translate/interpret obscure Japanese games. I am starting with Majotachi no Nemuri, and was thinking of doing either Maria or Another Mind next. I haven't played Another Mind yet so I will have to play through it at least once to make sure it doesn't have any content that will get me kicked off of Youtube. I wanted to start this a long time ago with PC98 games only to find out that 90% of the adventure/visual novels games have some kind of nudity, sex or rape in them.
