Why is Giana Sisters objectively better than Mario?

>> No.4634743

This is why so many people on this board make fun of eurofags.

It is better, though.

Anything is better than Mario, so I don't have to play this game to agree. Kid Chameleon is better than both combined, however.

Because Mario is popular, and anything popular is automatically complete shit that was made as cheaply and quickly as possible to be marketed to the lowest common denominator, because why else would so many people like it? Because it's good? Haha.

You don't believe it was Sony's fault?
Nintendo and Sega seemed to survive in a kind of ying-yang position, in harmony.
It was Sony who overtook and seized the market, and kicked Sega out.

>It was Sony who overtook and seized the market, and kicked Sega out.
Sony wanted to kick Sega AND Nintendo, and sure were aggressive about it.

Actually Sony bought NA rights to Metal Slug console ports so that Sega wouldn't be able to release them, despite Sony having no intention to use them. And then bought the rights for all of Konami's DreamCast launch lineup.
Sony also had an alliance with Squaresoft and Bandai to discourage third parties away from Nintendo that were not already discouraged by that shriveled unappealing Yamauchi prune. First on the N64 and then on the WonderSwan. Sony even offered an Arc the Lad port for the occasion.

It got bad enough Sega and Nintendo forged an alliance to have each one's games on the other's consoles (only a Pokemon Sega Pico game resulted from Nintendo's side by the time Sega went kaput)

Cocky PlayStation was alive well into the PS2 era too, they bought exclusivity for many of the few third party multiplatforms to further kick the already dead GameCube horse. European PES exclusivity for example.

>> No.4635837

Typical European platformer in that it looks kind of cool but has very unmemorable game design and poor controls.

>> No.4635898

Of course it's going to be better, Mario was the first video game. It wasn't a hard act to follow up.

>> No.4636002

Objectively better music, better graphics and better controls. Also no swimming BS.

Enemy characters and running ability are missing though.

Giana also has some cool hacks, like Furry Knibble Girls. SMB1 hacks are quite annoying including the Lost levels.

SMB3 and SMW are different though, they are better than Giana, but they were made much later.

Giana castle music literally thrashes Mario's annoying castle tune.

It sounds like typical arpeggio-filled European game music of the period. Not much sense of melody or memorable tunes.

Koji Kondo has written some brilliant tunes, although SMB1's music isn't as good as some of his other efforts. I think what you're trying to argue is that European game music wasn't as melodic as Japanese music and you prefer the latter approach.

>> No.4636116

Europeans need to get out NOW.

>> No.4636120

As far as 80s Europlatformers go, GGS isn't a bad effort (and believe me, the bar for them can be _really_ low). But it does still lack really memorable characters and levels.

>> No.4636134

The most memorable level was stage 22 and the infamous pipe maze that ends with a piranha... that level always broke my deathless runs.

>> No.4636150

There's no sfx in the game, just music.

>people shitting on Hülsebeck's music
I mean, the music is actually the only good thing about Gianna Sisters.

>> No.4636163

>>4636150
That's due to technical limitations since the SID has only three channels so one had to pick between music and sfx and usually the former won out.

>>4636160

>> No.4636180

One thing I noticed with 80s-90s European games is that the music usually has nothing to actually do with the game and doesn't "fit" the levels at all. It's like "Oh hey, let's make a generic shmup and paste on some cool SID tune we made."

Super Mario leveldesign is repetitive and average as well. C'mon it can be cramped into a 12 level campaign:

1: goomba/koopa wankery
2: underground
3: mushroom platformer
4: fireball castle
5: lakitu level
6: swimming
7: jumping fishes
8: labirynth castle
9-12: world 8

Maybe you should extend it to 16 by adding an easy Bullet Bill/Hammer bro level, the piranha level (6-2), another mushroom platformer and another standard castle.

The other 16 levels are just simple repetitions.

At least in Giana all 32 levels look different. Some of them are weaker than the others though, especially around stage 25-26.

How much game do you think you're going to fit in 40k?

>> No.4636290

>>4636281
I know SMB is 40k. Was wondering how big GGS is for comparison?

>> No.4636298

>>4636290
Giana Sisters is 53k. It is a single load game and uses almost all of the memory in the C64 (trying to load this thing from a 1541 disk takes miles and forever). So yes, it's bigger than SMB by a good 13k, but you also have to remember that C64 games are more code-dense than NES games chiefly because it takes more code to scroll the screen around. It also doesn't have a hardware sprite multiplexer so you have to do that in software which takes extra code as well.

>> No.4636309

One of the big deficiencies with doing scrollers on the C64 is the slow-ass CPU. The NES is a good 75% faster and scrolling is practically free while it takes something like 20% of the C64's CPU time unless you use l33t haxor tricks like in Mayhem in Monsterland.

>> No.4636314

>>4636298
It also takes more code to load levels off a disk, although that's not an issue with single load games like Giana Sisters.
