>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)

So I started playing N64 on my video monitor and I've been noticing this line of light at the top. Some games it's there, some games it's not, and sometimes it'll just be hidden enough that you can't outright see it. I thought it was something wrong with my CRT, but other systems seem to display just fine and 240p test suite doesn't show anything wrong with the alignment either. It doesn't show up when I have the monitor on by itself either, it's like specifically the N64.
Anybody know what's going on? I'm using a mechanical switchbox and an everdrive 64 right now, but far as I could tell the problem persists even when I eliminate those.

>> No.4626985

>>4626981
Its the games alignment. Basically the eidge of the video signal is showing. I think it also depends of the brightness of the game too, if its really detailed but dont take my explanation as a technical analysis.

>> No.4627018

You mean I'm not actually supposed to be seeing that? My display is properly aligned though, maybe N64 just doesn't have such a good vertical overscan then.

The colors look great and sharp in between the audio buzz and wavy black line caused by the bad power cap. I also recently bought the nesrgb-igr board but am waiting to install until I get the cap issue fixed. With this board I'll be able to enjoy (TRIGGER warning) switching between 3 different emulator color palettes and resetting the console via the controller. Not that I ever will but no holes drilled and a 100% reversible mod.

Looks like you need to adjust your overscan, or vertical and horizontal size. On my monitor if I set it perfectly for snes, it does similar but not as pronounced as your pic. I ended up using the standard setting for snes and overscan for n64 as my pvm allows you to set each option independently. What type of crt are you using? It's probably something you can adjust in the service menu desu.

reposting from last thread

So this is maybe a retarded question, but I gotta ask. Ive had a Trinitron for a while now and it has plenty of ports on the back and one on the front. Now here's where Im a moron. I can't figure out how to change inputs. I can swap between DVD/HD/and TV which just results in snow, and can't figure out how to make use of all my video ports.

The inputs I can get it to go to work fine and I can hook whatever up too, it's just getting to be a pain to have to swap connections every time i want to play a different system and Id on't know if the guy I got it from did something weird to it.

pic related is not my set but the closest approximation I could grab a pic of right now. I won't be near my set for a while

>> No.4627372

Anyone have an opinion on pic related? My gut instinct is to always stay away from CRT's with media card slots because i thought it equated to HD but this monitor proves me wrong. 2 component inputs, 3 composite, and 2svideo. Sounds pretty dope to me

Let's discuss whether Trinitrons actually better than other CRTVs or just a hyped up meme.

Trinitrons are said to have sharper image than regular shadowmask CRTs. I've been told that this amounts to about half the difference that comprises the jump from S-video to component, assuming that the non-Trinitron CRT is a decent (Japanese) brand. Can anyone corroborate this? If the difference is so small then surely normies would not have been able to notice it and the new technology would not have caught on.

Trinitrons are said to be 25% brighter than non-trinitrons. Does this mean peak white levels can get 25% brighter resulting in higher contrast? Or does it mean the whole image is upshifted 25% to white so the black areas in games are more grey than regular CRTs? Has anyone ever noticed their games being brighter when they switched to a Trinitron?

Some oldtimers dislike Trinitrons because aperture grilles were never used in arcades. They say that shadowmasks produce "a warmer, less clinical, more comfy picture". What did they mean by this? Can someone explain this further, possibly with pics and analogies?

If Trinitron aperture grilles have more visible scanlines than shadowmasks do then does this mean that for 480i 6th gen games which do not have scanlines, the difference between a Trinitron and a regular CRT is less flagrant than for earlier games that do have scanlines? What about VHS movies and TV programs which are the whole reason normies ever bought TVs in the first place?

I have noticed that curved Trinitrons are heavier than curved regular CRTs. This does not seem strange, afterall the barrel glass of the Trinitron is different than the fishbowl glass of the typical CRT and so may have more mass. But, someone here said that flat Trinitrons are also heavier than flat regular CRTs. How can this be, given that flat Trinitrons and flat regular CRTs have the same shape/size of glass?

>Sharper
So many different makers can lower what you would say the average shadow mask to be. That said, the phosphor arrangement of slot masks just don't lend themselves as well to a very sharp image. Dot triad, on the other hand, can match and arguably surpass the sharpness of an AG display, but you're only going to see this on PC monitors and high end ones in particular. Slotmask was the primary mask design for TVs, despite coming later.

>Brighter
This goes back to when the tech was still new, but Trinitrons do tend to be a brighter (on average) picture. This comes down to the wires that make up the AG blocking and as such absorbing less of the electrons being shot at the screen to excite the phosphors than shadowmasks, as such the phosphors end up emitting more light. This was in comparison to older dot mask sets, and definitely was a selling point. The slot mask was invented specifically as a response to this, to allow for greater light emission.

>warmer, less clinical
Possibly from having more natural bloom than even a basic consumer Trinitron. They do in general have a softer image, which could be seen as a benefit in terms of aesthetic. Even with a higher TVL SM vs a lower TVL AG, you can still end up with sharper/more squarer "pixels" on the latter just do to the phosphor arrangement.

>480i
You get a sharper image, but also can end up with a bit more flicker than a shadowmask display, but this is a bit more of a source to source and model to model basis.

Almost none of the "flat" sets are actually completely flat internally. So with an FD Trinitron, you've got the bulkier glass (and metal frame all of the wires are connected to) of the standard design as well as a decent amount more laminated on in front of that. The glass on the 40'' flat XBRs gets to be well over an inch thick on the face.

I have noticed that, in general, flat CRTVs (silver) have speakers on the sides and curved CRTVs (black) have speakers on the bottom.

In my eyes the curved black CRTV bottom speakers usually appear to be larger in size/diameter than the flat silver CRTV side speakers.
Has anyone else noticed this or is it just an illusion caused by the different colours of plastic?

The number one factor in speaker sound quality, especially for low end speakers (which is anything that was ever sold in department stores), is the size/diameter.
Indeed, I have been told that old wooden box TVs (called console TVs) that had a single large speaker had much better sound quality than more modern 90s and 2000s stereo CRTVs despite being mono only.

Is it true then that curved black CRTV bottom speakers have noticeably better audio quality than flat silver CRTV side speakers?
And would this mild increase in sound quality be worth the reduced stereo separation of the bottom speakers necessarily being closer together?

Indeed, I have been told that old wooden box TVs (called console TVs) which had a single large speaker had much better sound quality than more modern 90s and 2000s stereo CRTVs despite being mono only.

Is it true then that curved black CRTV bottom speakers have noticeably better audio quality than flat silver CRTV side speakers?
And would this mild increase in sound quality be worth the reduced stereo separation of the bottom speakers being necessarily closer together?

you're reading just too much into it. as technology improves, lower cost models are introduced and fill the market, then you start seeing those a lot more, but it doesn't mean sound quality suffered BECAUSE of CRT tech developments, it just means manufacturers got shitty about sound because they figured they could get away with it.

aside from big cabinets (probably the only good thing about projection tvs), tvs with the best sound are the ones that use space around the neck for bass reflex.

RGB definitely looks best, but based on how you tweak the settings on the Framemeister and the TV itself, S-video can look pretty great, too. It also does a very good job with component and 480p signals as well, as long as the game isn't switching between resolutions, then there's a pretty big delay.
>And what did you pay for yours?
A little under 300, like 280-ish? This was back when they were still being produced, though, so prices will probably steadily be on the rise until/unless they develop a successor. It's certainly a risky time to buy one.

Honestly, a great option that people overlook is getting a consumer CRT in good shape and transcoding RGB to component with either a box or those cables. People are emptying their wallets for RGB monitors, but a nice component image can be indistinguishable from RGB depending on the monitors. People just want a PVM because they hear about them from youtube scum, but nobody takes into account that RGB on a beat-up PVM could probably be outclassed by S-Video on a fresher consumer set. With all the history that most existing CRTs have behind them, it's pretty hard to objectively judge quality without direct, in-person comparison.

There is that company making dedicated cables for each system, and they have built in. Their name is something stupid and obvious like "retro-something-or-other", I think. The fact that they're a dedicated company selling their stuff from a site makes me want to think they're a little more concerned about quality than your average, shady, Hong Kong-based ebay shitslinger. People should be using breakout audio cables anyway with RGB, since any RGB monitor they have will either have shit audio or no audio. The way I see it, if a gamer claims to care enough about quality to use an RGB setup, they should care enough to have a dedicated audio setup, too. I think that's probably the easiest way to spot a memer, is a PVM with no audio setup. Just dreadful.

Audio is treated like a red-headed stepchild, in general, not just in the gaming community. Everyone just HAS to have their 4K Ultra HD pictures to keep up with the Johnsons, but they are all too happy to settle for shitty, built-in speakers.

I want your opinion, /crt/. My ex gf just told me shes getting rid of her Toshiba, it has component and looks similar to the one in >>4639547 on the left (Maybe a 24AF46?). I already have a 24" Sony WEGA, also with Component. They're both flat screens, however the geometry on my WEGA is pretty fucked, not unplayable just beyond my skill level to fix. Certain colors make the screen display weird curves (Apparently a problem with the old caps?), and the convergence is bad in the upper corners. I still want to test out the Toshiba before I swap, but I just want some thoughts on the trade. How does Toshiba's tubes stack up to a trini? If it has good geometry and all would it be about the same? Have stuck with Trinis for a while now and am interested how the competition stacks up. Picture comparisons would be nice.

Yeah, it doesn't have Component. Also those are one input and one output, not two hookups. The jump from 8" to 14" is great, considering you get scanlines if you're interested. Definitely is a hell of a lot more playable, and that's not too bad a price. I would say get it, and stay on the lookout for a RGB/Component model and sell off the N5U when you find it.

This is almost definitely a typo, since the N-Series doesn't have component support at all. The N2 and N6 both support RGB, but the N5 is stuck with just C-Vid and S-Vid.

I'd say try and talk them down a bit, perhaps closer to $50, but there are worse deals out there. S-Video on that set would still look rather nice.

What kind of monitor is it? What kind of shape is it in?

The thing I hate that people can't seem to understand is that you can't judge an entire format, unilaterally, by only using the example you have. RGB on a 20-year-old monitor that was beat to shit obviously isn't going to look as good as S-video on a late model CRT that was gently used. Video quality on this kind of old technology is a crapshoot, but on monitors of comparable quality, RGB is a noticeable step up, unless you're one of those ignorant memers who only forked over the cash for an RGB monitor because a youtuber told you to.

Anyone know what the deal with this is? It seems like the projected image doesn't quite reach the left side of the screen, and when I adjust the image far enough left it starts to wrap in on itself. This doesn't happen on the right side, and when the geometry is 'mostly' setup this isn't much of an issue, but I'd like to know why it does this and if I can fix it. I'm running into a different problem where the center of the screen is slightly squished compared to the edges which results in a bit of warping with scrolling backgrounds and I believe this is part of the cause

Correct. NEVER use cleaners like Windex, Goo-gone, etc. They will ruin the anti-glare coating by causing visible rainbow streaking. Even if your display doesn't have an anti-glare coating, the liquid from Windex, Goo-Gone, etc. can discolor the plastic bezels surrounding the screen.

Use pure isopropyl alcohol on a clean microfiber cloth, canned air, or pure water on a microfiber cloth.

>> No.4659730

>>4659645
By nature of the CRT technology, it is impossible to get perfect geometry, hence why screens tend to be curved, to "hide" this effect and make it look more natural. Basically, the cathode gun isn't the same distance from all points of the screen.

So when you try to fit an irregular picture inside a perfect square it is going to look distorted no matter how hard you try to squeeze it. This isn't so noticeable with movies or 3D games, but it absolutely annihilates bi-dimensional games since the picture on screen is still being produced by a cathode gun. Some TVs like Sony's WEGA supposedly hide better this effect, but it is extremely hard since the technology wasn't made with this in mind. It's not like LCD panels, which use pixel perfect geometry because they were conceived like that.

Basically, cathode ray tube technology wasn't meant to display on a flat surface.
