Was that put on DVDs because it's a Rated M game? Do they care about ESRB ratings? Because by our today standards RE is pretty tame, and the graphics so primative it's really nothing.

Flashback is not a very fun game to watch. Arino didn’t seem to be too into it. But the Championship Lode Runner tips he gave we’re high-level.

The RE episode is probably one of my favorite ones, but maybe I'm biased because I love that game. I've also never done a playthrough in nip, so it was interesting to see the cutscene subtitles and how completely off the English dub work was.

This weeks wrestling game episode was "eh", but then the only wrestlers I even recognised were Chouno for obvious reasons, and Muta because there was a segment a few months back on Wednesday's Downtown about his poison breath gimmick. The last half almost salvaged it, but Arino exploiting the fuck out of the AI to beat the game in 3 hours and then getting stomped in the PvP tourney wasn't that interesting.

Yeah, but they were written by someone who probably had a pretty poor grasp of English.

Take "You, the master of unlocking", in Japanese it was カギ開けの得意なお前. Translating 得意 as master is just wild.

It's nowhere near as off as something like HotD2, where the poor fucking translator clearly had absolutely ZERO context given for any of the lines, and neither did the people reading them, creating a weird form of Chinese whispers.

>> No.4623892

>who probably had a pretty poor grasp of English.

The game was translated into English by the same people who made it, all Japanese. They even did the voice acting supervision which is why it's so weird. They asked the VAs to talk slowly, and to enunciate weirdly.

Japanese humor is about shaming and laughing at the misfortune of others. It's why Arino is so funny, he actually struggles with most games, but he never really lose his composture, he might do comments about how badly he's doing, but he rarely blames the game, he always blames his skills. The fact he has to finish games in one sitting also makes it funnier because it's like an endurance test and you can actually see the tiredness and lower stamina at the end of each episode on his face. Because he has to go through that shit, he's also allowed to make fun of the rest of the staff, so it's a back and forth play.
Also, the whole point of the show is that Arino is the chief so he has the status position to treat his staff badly if he wants.
I think the whole thing is pretty funny, mostly because Arino is a real comedian and has great timing and wit, but japanese comedy might not be for everybody.

Got a helpful reply from the GCCX General email account regarding the Pokemon Red and Green Volume 1 translation by a redditor:

>That translation had flown under our radar when it was originally released. I wasn't personally aware of it until quite some time later. Unfortunately, it's definitely regarded as low quality. The biggest problem with it is the translator's lack of ability at pun adaptation. Although it's rarely an easy task, this translator did not handle the puns well.

>Rather than attempting smooth adaptations, he repeatedly used extra text and definitions to explain the jokes. This has a tendency to take the viewer out of the flow of an episode, spoiling the rhythm and humor. Arino makes a large number of puns when naming his Pokemon in these episodes, so this problem comes up over and over again.

>Admittedly, adapting foreign puns can be very difficult. If no reasonable adaptation can be made, it's often better just to transcribe it directly and let the occasional joke be missed by the viewer, rather than filling the screen with a paragraph that ruins both the joke and the pacing. Although a small translator's note is sometimes the best solution, they should be used very sparingly and avoided in most cases.

>> No.4644687

>>4644686

>We've already had two separate votes about including this translation in our documents, with it being voted down both times. The first time, we were simply debating whether or not to include it at all. The second time, we were considering including it with a disclaimer like you suggested.

>I appreciate that the translator clearly loves Pokemon and GCCX, but we decided that including this translation of very questionable quality in our acknowledgments may not be a good idea. Seeing the first episode in a series of challenging translations credited to someone else might make it less likely for a more skilled translator to tackle these episodes at some point, as they may not want to step on someone else's toes and might assume that other Pokemon episodes have translations in progress. Although the hope of these episodes being translated any time soon is far from certain, this could result in a significant delay if qualified translators start avoiding them.

>If this translator goes back to improve his work and continues on with more episodes, we can reevaluate the situation at that time.

>Thank you for your interest and input. If you have any other suggestions or questions, feel free to contact me at any time.

I'm kinda interested that they don't seem to get all autistic like many retro-games get about displays and output. It's only because he was shown for a few seconds in the first episode of the series for Takashi's Challenge. After that, it was Toujima, and he was treated as the original AD. Yamada's exist was completely ignored to the point that fans just refer to him as the phantom AD. And the only comment we have on him was Abe calling him a 'waste of human skin' when he was asked who his least favorite AD was.

Only other real drama was Inoue allegedly getting wasted in passing out in the parking lot of the station the day before they were to record a studio (This was when he was the director.) "ripping" hardcoded subtitles isn't as hard as people think, since blurays decided to use bitmaps instead of the old method(bluray movies subtitles are images overlay on the video instead of rendering the text on it) a need for OCR'ing those bitmaps from images to plain text was needed and created(Bluray Subs can be OCR in seconds including timings and even can tell you where the program had problems transcribing so you can check it and fix if needed)
The same methodology can be used for OCR'ing hardcoded subtitles albeit a bit slower since the you are still at the mercy of the video's quality but you can still get timing and very good results, a 1 hour video could be done in a few hours at most.
if someone is still doing hardsubs in this age because they think it will stop people from stealing their sub, they are just being silly.
The reason why it's not being done is just the simple lack of interest and of course the most obvious"it is worth it" part you can't avoid thinking.
People in here complain about the translations all the time that it makes you believe it really isn't worth transcribing them.

just a silly rant dont think too much about it

>> No.4698373

For whose sake though? People watch shows like this to relax and have fun, if they have to bust out a dictionary to follow what's being said they're far more likely to simply stop watching and that happening is ultimately the biggest possible failure from a translation standpoint. Meanwhile if you're a hardcore language purist then you shouldn't be relying on a translation in the first place because those kinds of changes are done in all translated media all the time for the exact same reason.

For example a reference involving a minor Japanese actor from some Japanese tv-show will completely miss its target for most non-Japanese viewers, so practically all at least semi-competent translators will do something like changing it to a Western actor from a Western tv-show despite anyone being able to "do a quick internet search" to look up the original person and thus get the reference that way. But nobody actually fucking does that in practice so that serves no one whatsoever.

>Then let something like that miss its target. Don't butcher it by nonsensically changing it to some western reference.

A reference that's meant to be understandable but in practice is lost to almost the entire audience due to a change in language is pointless though. Anyone who's played Japanese video games or consumed other media without understanding the original languages has encountered similar changes constantly, they just haven't realized it because the translation has succeeded in making the change natural.

Like this stuff is done literally everywhere, all the fucking time. Literally the only difference here is that people go over this particular show's translation with unmatched autismal fury few other pieces of media can match.

>>4698454
>>4698472

Mentioning you met someone isn't a reference, don't act like idiots. But sure, maybe "actor" was not the clearest example I could've picked. What I mean is that if someone in a Japanese show or game or whatever for example says "That guy acts like he was [name of Japanese action movie character]", it'll practically always be changed to "That guy acts like he was John McClane" or something similar because that's a reference Western viewers will understand, allowing them to grasp the meaning of the line which is the goal of a successful translation.
