This just really goes to show how arbritary the defenitions on retro are as far as /vr/ is concerned. Reminder that THIS pic related is considered “retro” whilst Tekken Tag 1 cannot because PS2.

A rule of "older than 20 years is retro" would fix that, but i'm too smart for this place.

>> No.4620642

>>4620639
In my case, i defend this rule for two reasons:
- As videogames get released, developers learn how to get most of a platform. There is clearly a evolution within a system.
- Videogames will receive influences from everywhere. Two games released at the same year on different generation consoles are the product of a bunch of developers playing more or less the same games, receiving the same influences.

Because there isn't much you can argue against the fact that 1999 is one year, and 2000 is another year.
Anyway, even though there are some games for PS1 released in 2005, nobody really discusses them here, they're only posted as bait.

Weren't those two consoles almost immediately accepted on /vr/ after like a week? The only contentious one was the Dreamcast, which was technically allowed at first, then banned for a short while, then officially allowed with an unban. I still remember the wave of shitposting brought on by the DC unban. I like the DC and think it fits here considering how early it died, but I think allowing literally anything newer than 2000 would be a disaster that would sweep over the board and rot it to its core (not that this hasn't been slowly happening for years already). The moment you can talk about CoD and Halo on the board, the board is left for dead. I have been to /v/ recently and I have seen people express unironic nostalgia for Halo 1 and 2 and they would come here.
I'm not against /v2k/ since I don't have to go there, as long as it's not here.

I still don't think they really fit in. The way I see it, 5th gen is the beginning of modern game design. 6th gen is pretty much the same thing with more polygons.

>> No.4623542

>>4623529
>6th gen is pretty much the same thing with more polygons.
That's why accepting one but not the other is stupid. They are almost the same thing.

When I think about modern games I think about online games, AAA, generic fps, DLC, unfinished mess that will be "fixed" in the next patch.

The cut off should either be before the 5th gen (popularization of 3D), or after the 6th (yada yada), not in between.

>> No.4623545

>>4623542
Well, 6th gen really started the generic FPS trend, and online was one of the big things of the original Xbox. Dreamcast had online and even the Famicom in Japan had internet if you want to stretch it, but Halo was the first console game that really kicked off the popularity of online FPSs, of course before Halo, on PC there were already shit like Counter-Strike, which I think it's technically considered retro because it was released in late 99 or something, before 2000.
Also, during the days of 6th gen, on PC there was the WoW craze which also kicked off MMOs massively, mind the redundancy.
5th gen is definitely a weird middleground, a sort of missing link between retro and modern.

Sounds like Gen 6 to me. Patches that add the rest of an unfinished game and the death of middle-sized game projects are moreso 7th Gen though, I agree.
