So I wanted to finally give the Resident Evil series a try and of course I started with the first one. I'm somewhat enjoying the spooky atmosphere and the cheese in the voice acting. But I find I die so many times while trying to do even the most basic tasks. Any tips of suggestions for noobs/newcomers to the the series?

I don't know how, do you have auto aim disabled or something (is that even possible to do in the PS1 version)

>avoid combat if possible
>dump the knife
>use the handgun only on dogs and zombies
well maybe you can use the knife to finish off the zombies you've knocked down with a handgun to conserve ammo
try playing as jill if you're having problems, she can't take as much punishment as chris but she can carry more stuff, which is more important in the long run

Take RE1 out of your Playstation and replace it with RE2.

As a general rule, use ink ribbons wisely. Only save after you've made some sort of progress. As you play, and die, you'll realize how trivial some rooms can become which can dramatically cut down on how frequently you save. If you die and reload, try and think of how simple and efficient you can make your path; see how many things you can take care of in one trip and how few bullets/herbs you can use along the way. The more you do this, the more manageable the game becomes later.

Zombies in RE1 have a fatal flaw that makes them very easy to dodge. As long as you keep some distance while they approach, eventually they'll turn 45 degrees or so away from the player giving you a perfect path around their backside. You can dodge plenty of them without this trick so use it as a last resort. Find a lone Zombie to test on and you'll see what I mean. Zombies in general can't fully turn a 180 and grab you so their back is usually a safe spot.

Simple stuff:
-Aim up with shotgun at close range to decap Zombies
-Reload weapons in the inventory
-Thoroughly inspect any key items you get
-If you're playing as Jill, her different Bazooka rounds work better on certain enemies but Acid is generally the most valuable
-Some secrets/endings depend on what path you've taken and the choices you've made

Anything in particular that you're struggling with?

Just start playing the game, make plenty of mistakes, and eventually git gud. There's nothing anyone can tell you that you won't have to discover for yourself anyway.

Also, it might be worth mentioning that there's no PS1 release of this game with de-censored content. Although Capcom promised to release such a cut at some point, the Director's Cut actually didn't de-censor shit due to a supposed bureaucratic oversight.

Capcom. Never again.

OP here. I find I make a little bit of progress and die and end up repeating the same things over and over. I'm trying to conserve ammo and run around what I can but its tricky in rooms with multiple zombies. Also I find it hard to remember which doors require which keys but that's just a personal complaint. Oh and I have no idea what the 2 smaller keys do that have no markings on them.

Since you mentioned the small keys, you must be playing as Chris. Those keys are used for a few doors and are consumed upon using them; which is why you have a couple. Don't worry about it, just treat them like the other keys. Jill gets a lockpick in a free inventory space (where Chris' lighter is) which lets you unlock the doors Chris needs the small keys for.

Chris' game is a bit harder than Jill but he moves faster, takes a bit less damage and can use the handgun a bit better than her.

You're on the right track just running around finding stuff and dying. Generally, RE1 doesn't give you much in the early game (key items) that you can't immediately do something with. Load a save with the intention of exploring and dying just so you can find something you can unlock. Usually unlocking one door leads to the next piece of the puzzle (and sometimes a conveniently placed save room). If you can take an efficient route, acquire something new and use only a few consumable items along the way, that's a good reason to save. The more you explore, the more ink ribbons you'll find. As long as you can execute something better on a reload, you're making good progress.

Most rooms and hallways have some unique trait about them to help you remember where they are and what they connect to: "red hallway", "armor room", "balcony" etc. RE1 has a primitive map system so it might help to write down notes like, "armor key, double doors, second floor". Just knowing ahead of time what awaits after a door opening sequence can help tremendously. The mansion is easily the biggest area in the game and actually has a ton of rooms that you won't visit until later so don't worry about keeping track of every locked door. Work with what you have and eventually you'll make some progress.

You might also want to restart and play as Jill. Her bigger inventory makes for a much better first experience. Chris's smaller one is an enormous handicap when you're playing blind and don't know exactly which items you're going to need.

How do you die in Resident Evil? It has to be one of the easiest games out there. Once you finish the game once with each character and know the progression that you are supposed to take, you'll always have ammo. For the first time just play as Jill and get the shotgun and bazooka right away. If you do it right at the beginning of the game you can get the shotgun without needing the broken shotgun and there is a lot of shotgun ammo lying around the house especially in locked drawers.

I played the game a few months back on Sega Saturn and had a lot of fun. I remember beating it when I was a kid.
I died a whole lot as Chris, you are going to have to make a lot of trips to the storage container.

What is the deal with the second Hunting Knife? Why is it there so late in the game?

If I am recalling this correctly, you pick it up in the same room you kill the Giant Spider and can use it to cut the wave that is covering the door without having to go back to a storage box.

>> No.4620126

>>4620059
It's in the room with Black Tiger, the giant spider. The devs put it there so you could use it to slash away the webbing from the door without having to backtrack and get the original knife or risk trying another method. REmake features the "real survival" mode which has no auto aim (like the original US release of RE1) and independent item boxes that don't share inventories with one another. The mode claims it was the early prototype for RE, so that extra knife might have been left over from the original build where backtracking to the starting knife would have been a ridiculous ordeal.

The knife is still there in REmake too which makes it useful on real survival. In RE1 you can actually use Black Tiger's spit attack to break the webbing or use Jill's bazooka and Chris' flamethrower to destroy it as well. I think you can use the acid spit method in REmake too but Black Tiger is way more dangerous and far less predictable in that game.

It's not the hardest game in the world but playing it again for the first time since childhood, as Chris, on the Saturn version which has a double Tyrant battle in the lab isn't a guaranteed auto-win.

The mansion is deliberately designed to kill you too. Entering the shotgun room as Chris without the broken shotgun is an inescapable death trap.

>> No.4620469

>>4620242
The double Tyrant battle isn't that difficult, since you fight them separately and as long as you keep your distance you will be find. As for the small drawing room that has the shotgun, you will be fine as long as you don't take the shotgun right away. If you are playing as Chris you more than likely will have the Armor key by the time you even go to get the shotgun.

>> No.4620543

Taking my time with first ever Chris REmake run. I've beaten the classic RE 2 or 3 times with both characters, and did Jill in REmake once so this is pretty fun. But there are some valid criticisms to be had.

>game throws too many herbs at you
I've just came back to the mansion from the garden area so I'm roughly halfway into the game and I have about 15 healing items stocked.
>return to mansion is overall too easy compared to the original game
not only are hunters a joke in REmake but you can also use defensive items on theme. That aside the second medalion quest is also too short and easy. Original threw at least 10 or 15 zombies at you once you drop down after the Yawn 2 fight, plus you had too much shit to pick up (magnum ammo, mo disk, battery, herbs, regular ammo) that you had to make two runs at it but it felt very satisfying in the end. Here you get that whole part of the game wrapped up in two minutes.

I also didn't like how the game makes you go for Serum twice if you fuck up. I went first to grab it to save Richard, then I fucked up in the Yawn 1 fight and got poisoned. Rebecca finds me and instead of having some on her you have to do the same thing again, but controlling her instead. This could've been scripted so that if you did it once you don't have to do it again, I feel.

I can appreciate that dogs are for once an actual threat, even when there is only one of them. They dodge your shots and have stupid quick attacks, almost too hard even but it's nice. But other than that it's quite easy. I will push through it and then play as Jill on the unlocked hard mode, hopefully that ups the challenge a bit.

Earliest version.
Original PS1 release didn't get it because it was the first release.
N64 got the randomizer.
PS1 Dualshock got Ex. Battle
GCN got skippable cutscenes (other than that, direct port of the PS1 version)
PC got Hard Mode
Dreamcast was a straight port of the PC version with Hard rebranded as Nightmare.
You're not missing out on much as it only really increases enemy health. The N64 Randomizer and S-Rank on Arrange are much better challenges as they require actual skill.

You clearly haven't played N64 randomizer. It doesn't change the key items, just the ammo and health. And even at that point it doesn't switch it around, instead it turns 90% of shit into handgun ammo and blue herbs. Its a fucking gimmick and not even a remotely good one at it.
