This game is incredibly underrated as N64 shooters go. Everybody praises the usual suspects like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Turok and Doom 64 on occasion, but Quake really flies under the radar. It isn't an original game like Doom 64 and it doesn't have all of the bells and whistles of something like Perfect Dark, but man is it fun. It also runs butter smooth (60fps at many times), you can turn off the anti-aliasing, you can completely customize the controls and the graphics are very sharp and colorful. I legitimately enjoy this more than the PC version, despite its limitations. I don't know why, just something about the ambient sound track, the moody color palette... it's just a great game that more people should play.

Agree. I think maybe it's the fact that they cut out the most boring parts and the background sound was better. They already had a ton of experience playing it on PC so they knew which bits/levels to cut out and what to do better. I remember the fact that it was a year old by the time it hit N64 given as some big negative point by one review. Like who the fuck cares as long as it's good.

> I remember the fact that it was a year old by the time it hit N64 given as some big negative point by one review. Like who the fuck cares as long as it's good.
Completely agree my dude.

I think you're right, they kept the really good levels and ditched the trash, and ambient sound track was less intrusive and more atmospheric than Reznor's OST. The atmosphere as a whole is just vastly superior, it's one of the best examples of how color can be used to create a melancholy mood better than simple browns and greys.

It's funny, because Perfect Dark is one of my favorite games and offers so much more content, but I always find myself playing this game most of the time. Beating it on nightmare with no cheats was one of the most engrossing, rewarding gaming experiences I've ever had. Having played the shit out of it, nowadays I try to breath a little life into it by attempting to beat it on nightmare, in one sitting, without ever dying, but so far haven't managed to get past level 5 or so. Shit is pretty brutal.

It has a slightly larger library in terms of sheer quantity, but when it comes to good games, the N64 blows the Saturn out of the fucking water. The Saturn's must-have library is laughable, literally 10 games at most.

Favourite? There's many games I love for the system but as cliche as it sounds Super Mario 64 is my favourite of all time.

Multiplayer: Fucking smash 64 still takes the try hard out of me and my friends. Also fifa 98 is a fucking bless with the glitches and wonky animations.

Underrated: Rakuga Kids / Japanese Bomberman / Chamaleon Twist 2 and Tarzan 64.

Overrated: I love majoras mask but people saying it was better than ocarina have no idea of anything. It's cool and very grim, but the 3 day limit just kills the exploration and the joy of finishing a good temple at your pace.

Banjo Tooie is worse than DK64. I'd rather have a tedious and simple game than a tedious and convoluted game

I think that both Turok games are legitimately some of the best FPS games of their time. Problem is that they don't play that well on the N64. 2 especially is so much better on PC it isn't really worth playing on the N64, though 1 at least has a playable, though low, framerate.

My last system purchase was one of the generic Everdrives. It works MOST titles without issue. I haven't figured out how to get Perfect Dark or DK64 working, but I suspect either a patch is needed or it is just impossible with the generic POS. However It gives no issues with most titles. Conkers seems to be missing some of the audio dialog, but the gameplay is spot on.

I can't reccommend an ED64 to anyone unless you understand that it is generic as it gets. It works great most of the time, but simply does not have the compatibility that the newer everdrive offers.

Fave Game
>Perfect Dark
There is just so much to this game.
The firing range, for example, could be a game in and of itself. In 2000, I can't think of any games that had firing ranges in them.
>The missions
The missions in each of the 3 difficulty settings are like 3 different levels. New objectives and new rooms open up. In the case of Carrington Villa and Deep Sea, they are literally different missions.
>The politics of the game
You play as a woman. The main villains are aliens (of unknown gender or whatever). They are in cahoots with a mega corporation. This coroporation's CEO is a woman. The President of the USA is a black (or half-black) guy.
And to think today games try so hard with all this shit and do it all wrong. PD just did it and it wasn't making a big deal about it.
>The inventiveness
The cheese in every level! The secondary functions ! Laptop Gun becomes a wall-mounted drone! AR becomes a proximity mine! Alien pistols with explosive shells! A freaking P-90 that makes you cloak!

The replay value of PD, too. I still play it.

>Multiplayer choice
Mario Tennis in 4 player doubles is better than anything before or since tbqh

>Overrated
Hard to say. A lot of the early releases are pretty overrated like Mario 64 (its good, but the camera angles... Also feels a bit like a demo.) Mario Kart 64 (this hasn't aged well) Yoshi's Story, Blast Corps, Shadows of the Empire etc. These games were hyped up to oblivion.

Speaking of oblivion, beware for it is at hand, yes, I'm talking about you, Turok series. My local game store was selling Turok 1 for 95 quid in '97 when it came out. Turok 2 is alright but its very clunky and the difficulty slope is insane. Way overrated games. I guess what can you expect from Acclaim.

>Underrated game

Other overrated games include Mario Party 2 ( I have no idea why people say this is the best one ; MP 1 is better than it outwith the stick rotating business, and if that rules MP 1 out then MP3 is much better than 2. You can carry 3 items and in general its not as shit

F Zero X
The gameplay on this is so deep, beating the time trials is so difficult, getting to know every ship, and the genius of the track design. I'm so miffed i've never played the DD expansion, and i'd love to one day.

>Latest Purchase
in 2009 I got Banjo Tooie on Ebay for £ 30. I also got a second expansion kit for my 2nd 64 round about then too.

But my most recent recent purchase was Mario Golf in CEX for £ 8. I was expecting greatness because i love Mario Tennis and I always meant to pick this up.
However it was nowhere near Mario Tennis levels , but what I found was a surprisingly deep golf sim.
Mario Golf is deep and rewarding but not too much fun , however as far as golf games go it's good. Gets quite good when youre passing a 'troller round and all trying to get that elusive putt off.

>Also underrated
Star Wars Rogue Squadron
while the Gamecube sequels do what this game wishes it could, this is a solid as fuck game. It's hard as nails too and has plenty replay value. I love how it goes into little side quests from the Star Wars EU to give the "between ep. IV and V" type vibe to it.

It has both passwords and memory pak saving. No on-cart saving as is standard for 3rd party N64 games but it uses very little space on the memory pak so it shouldn't be an issue.

Also, I suggest using the following control scheme: d-pad to move, analog to look, A to jump, B to switch weapons backward, L to switch weapons forward. Might be a bit weird at first if you don't usually play N64 shooters with this setup but it's the closest thing to dual analog.

It's a great game, enjoy it.

You understand that this is a left-handed control scheme right? If you have played any modern console shooter (or PC shooter) and are right-handed, the most natural thing is to move with your left hand and aim with your right. Aiming with the left and moving with buttons is retarded as fuck. Either you have just become accustomed to using a shit control scheme through sheer repetition, or have such tiny hands that you can't reach A/B when holding the middle prong with your right hand. You can probably finagle it so that the left analog will move in 8 directions by mapping the d-pad controls to it (which might be fine since the GCN controller has an octagonal gate anyway) but it probably won't feel quite as smooth as playing a normal twin stick shooter. Sounds like a nice setup though.

Compared to PS1 and/or Saturn versions:

Rayman 2: most faithful version besides Dreamcast with best graphics and without cut content like the PS1.

Hexen: most faithful to PC version, best graphics, 4 player co-op and deathmatch, PS1 and Saturn are very limited and don't even have side or back sprites for monsters or proper death animations

Quake 1: best graphics, best controls, steady framerate up to 60fps, most faithful gameplay to the PC version, is missing a few levels compared to the Saturn but overall far superior experience and Saturn runs with single digit framerate 75% of the time.

Quake 2: PS1 is more faithful to PC original but N64 version has all brand new levels, no load times, better deathmatch, fully customizable controls, better overall graphics aside from animations, added muzzle flash (which no other version has) and is the only 5th gen game ever made to run in true 24bit color.

Gauntlet Legends: best version of the game even moreso than the arcade port, best graphics and visual effects, 4 player, has some unique features, PS1 version only supports 2 players, has half as many enemies on screen, doesn't let you sell item you find and lacks some visual effects

I will mention that for many games, like Hexen, there are no FMV cutscenes for obvious reasons. Outside of that, N64 multiplats are superior to either Saturn or PS1 99% of the time.

>Holy fucking shit kid how stupid are you? Try throwing a baseball with your non-dominant hand and tell me that it's "about the same" as throwing with your dominant hand.

Because you need muscle to throw a baseball quickly. If you had to throw it a tiny distance with accuracy, and you practiced with your left hand as much as your right, they would be very similar.

>Also, what is this bullshit about your hand being "free"? You have access to the same amount of inputs using both methods, one is just left-handed and uses shitty C buttons and one doesn't. What is so hard to understand about this?

I understand fine. The thumb that is on the analogue should stay on the analogue, it shouldn't have to move around. I'm honestly starting to wonder if any of you even played these games.

No it's not. The c-buttons are so close to each other there is no difference.

>So let me get this straight... you have your left hand on the middle prong, using the analog stick to aim, and then you press the Z button with your right hand? What the fuck are you smoking?

This is beyond stupid. If the analog stick is controlling aiming, then you would simply not be able to move the camera for a moment while switching weapons. With your control scheme, you have to switch your thumb from the C buttons to A/B, meaning you stop moving. That is retarded as fuck.

It was over 40 titles, and all were quality. No sports fillers EXCEPT Nba Hangtime & QB club with the high resolution option. The flash cart saves me loads of time and space. I get "text" or something that is all crunched up on the bottom 1/8th of the screen, and after a few moments it goes black.

Same result as when I bought it and spent days trying to get it to work.

Pic is what I get, and I have tried all roms included in the pack. Months ago when I went through all this, I came here to ask questions and basically got shit on for not spending 3x more for the best flash cart reader. I wasn't offered any help, just flamed for getting exactly what I expected.

My problem is that by all accounts this should not be a problem title.

It is what it is. I am not missing out on the titles that matter to me. I got the flash cart to save space, so no matter what I am still ahead.

some say Duke Nukem but it has no music at all and no quicksaves
the Tony Hawk games looked better but had worse soundtracks
Resident Evil 2 was on one cart and looked better, had a randomizer too. it doesn't have battle mode though
Rayman 2 was heavily cut down on ps1.
Rainbow Six was also cut down
Glover runs like ass on ps1, so does Shadowman
Hydro Thunder is slower but also doesn't look like puke. pick your poison
San Francisco Rush has horrific load times and worse graphics on ps1
Mortal Kombat 4 had more polygons. Mortal Kombat Trilogy has Goro on ps1 but also horrific load times. Pick your poison
not sure where Ridge Racer 64 lies (port of 1 and Revolution with a new track). it looks better but the soundtrack isn't as good
Mission Impossible was better on n64.
Vigilante 8 has an extra level and looks nicer
most of the 3D Midway sports games are better, especially Wayne Gretzky Hockey

Midway really were the unsung heroes of the N64 when you think about it.

>> No.4621941

>>4621927
Yeah, like I said, it doesn't have all the impressive technical features that stuff like PD does but it's just so damn smooth. Once you play on Nightmare, that's when things get fun, because you have to be really smart about how you manage your resources and careful about how you approach certain areas. Most of the secrets from the PC version are there too (including some new ones I believe) so there's some cool stuff to find, including alternative exits to the secret levels.

I'd say what makes it impressive in my eyes is that they were able to pull it off at all. It's easy to make a really good looking game that runs like ass, but they effectively shoved what would have taken a $1500 PC at the time into a $200 console with only minor cutbacks and with a solid framerate no less. When you compare it to the Saturn port, it's a night and day difference. I'd say this, PD and Doom 64 form my holy trinity of shooters on the console.

Also check out Quake 2 at some point. It was made by the same guys, has all brand-new levels, a way better multiplayer and is the only 5th gen game ever made to run in true 24bit color.

I've said the same thing many times, glad somebody else recognizes it too. They made so many killer games: the Quakes, Doom 64, Gauntlet Legends, Rampage, even fucking World Driver, and they were always better than the versions made for other consoles. I recall hearing something about Midway being one of Nintendo "core developers" at the time and being given special resources/documentation that surely helped. Everybody praises Rare (understandably), but Midway was amazing too.

Impeccable taste my friend. As for Q2 and PD, you're in for two of the best shooters on the console. Mods/online aside, Quake 2 is legitimately better on N64 than PC and has all brand-new levels. The only bad thing I can say is that the weapon animations can be choppy, but you quickly get used to it and the addition of muzzle flash wins me over. PD is a different story, it's legitimately one of the best shooters ever made and has features that shooters today don't even have. Customizable AI bots, you can make your own character model, tweak matches with tons of modifiers, etc. Fantastic game.
>>4622127
I have beaten Quake 2 on every difficulty level at least twice and never once had this problem. Either you're playing on an emulator, have a broken cart or are doing something wrong. You know some switches have to be shot, right? Give me an example of one that isn't working for you.

Docking Station. Level 7 I think. There are 3 explosive charges that you have to set up before completing the level. At the final charge location there's supposed to be a switch that opens a secret room in a nearby wall. I cleared the entire level of enemies and even tried setting the final charge (which sets off a countdown) nut the switch doesn't even seem to be there, it's just a regular textured piece of tech. Skip to 5:40, that's where the switch is supposed to be.

Well first, does it look like it's brand new? Is there a small imprinted number on the right side of the back label? Is the front label kind of glossy with dark colors, does it look different from other pics of cartridges online? If you have the necessary security bits, you can open it up real quick and examine the board for stuff like a Nintendo logo to help ensure that it's real.

Either it's a repro or busted because even if it was a glitch, it would be a one time thing and not something that continues to persist each time you replay the level.

Are you saying that using the jumper pak in games that don't require the expansion pak improves frame rate?

>> No.4622378

>>4622301

In some games, yes. Some developers were clever about this, while some just used the Expansion Pak to increase resolution, consequences be damned. Frankly, though looking at the list of games and features indicates the Expansion Pak was largely used for performance or feature improvements!

Perfect Dark is the example everyone thinks of, since it drops to single digit frame rates in some levels with high resolution mode enabled. This is not really a valid example, though, since the whole of PD's single player requires the Expansion Pak to run anyhow.

----

This list here does show which games require or make use of the Pak: http://nintendo.wikia.com/wiki/Nintendo_64_Expansion_Pak

Quake II for N64, for example, runs much more smoothly with the Expansion Pak.

Note that many games offer the option "higher resolution at the cost fewer FPS." This shouldn't be surprising, and is really just a sign of a lazy developer. The Expansion Pak is simply more RAM. RAM doesn't make the N64 process anything any more quickly, just allows for larger textures or other information to be held in memory.

Note that for F-1 World Grand Prix II, the Expansion Pak allows "a full race replay." This makes sense, since presumably it is holding that data in memory.

For Gauntlet Legends, it's required for 4-player (which is really one of the most amazing ways to play this game!)

And some developers were smart: the Expansion Pak brings Road Rash 64 from 30 fps to 60! For South Park, it "Enables hi-res mode, increases frame rate in lo-res mode." Etc ....
