4604147 No.4604147 [Reply] [Original]

How would you guys go about painting a SNES?
It's fairly simple to take apart, but I have no experience in painting.

Does anyone know if I could just get a black base and then spray it with a finish? The only stuff I've painted in the past end up sticky after they dry. I assume it's because they aren't finished/coated.

>> No.4604151

You definitely need an airbrush. Trying to do that with a hand brush will end up looking like some 2nd grader's Pinewood Derby car.

Could I spray paint it and then use a hand brush for the clear coating afterwards?

>> No.4604161

Use better paint or as you already suspect, better top coat. That'll get you results like in your pic. If you want the deep, glossy look the easy way I recommend Interlux Brightside one-part boat paint. It's amazing.

You can give it a retrobrite treatment.

Is it possible to dye it with something like Rit Dye? If not I'd imagine you'd need some paint that was on the thinner side in order to keep the grain of the plastic and so everything goes back together snug.

it won't be 'less yellow', it'll restore the colour back to its original state. I really can't believe how dumb people are on this board at times. you DO NOT paint consoles unless you've tried all other options. since you don't want to try and want to make up some lame excuse to justify your laziness, then go right ahead.. paint it! don't forget to post photos of your "work" so we can all have a good laugh at it.

Spray paint? Do more coats with less paint.

Your first coat should be so thin that you can kind of see through it in some places. Then put that much paint on every coat for 2-3 coats and you'll be fine.

>>4605006
i painted an old Hori arcade stick with VHT vinyl dye, it came out ok but it definitely changed the feel of the plastic even though it's not supposed to. ended up having to clear coat it. maybe it would work better for a console since it's not something you're physically handling all the time

not really.
The plastic is so thick that the oxidation and reactions on its surface do not really influence its stability. We are talking about a surface reaction throgh oxygen and UV radiation not an inherent reaction through the whole material like gold plastic syndrome which lets golden carts crumble like cookies.
It's mostly an aesthetic problem if you see it as one.

I have had great success with Krylon fusion brand paints. Designed for plastics.

Clean your surfaces, and apply 3-5 light coats per the dry instructions. You can use a clear coat, but not a lacquer.

>>4605086
>You could, you better be good at spray painting or else it would look like a clown did it.
Light coats are the only way to do something like this. I let pieces dry between coats, and re-prep. If you put it on too thick, it will pull and sag and only gets worse the more coats you put on.

Plastic chemist here. Retrobright is a short term treatment. It works well but in the long term the plastic will be totally fucked up and cracked. Historians in few generations will curse us.

Correct type of paint would actually protect it so it may be a good idea if only it wasn't ugly.

Best solution: like wine let it become old and yellowed (if you got one which yellows), it's not like the games' picture is yellowing too.

>Being this autistic about m-muh original looking hardware

Considering any shitty Retrobright/Hydrogen Peroxide treatment is not permanent and your console will quickly turn back into being a piss stained piece of plastic, yeah, painting while also doing a fine job seems a viable option.

But I forgot we have to wait for your approval before going on with our choices :^)

Also, OP's looks great. Just my two cents.

>> No.4608329

First of all, painting a console shell is not a permanent irreversible process. With paint thinner and proper technique, a coat of paint can be removed to reveal the base plastic.

Secondly, for an old piss yellow piece of plastic that is going to continue to rot, coating it will actually help preserve the plastic from further UV damage, and make the system look newer or even better than before.

Yes, it's "vandalizing" history, but a simple matte black coat to an older system isn't destroying it or ruining it.

>> No.4608352

I painted my NES and SNES black using regular rattle can spray paint and I'm happy with the look. It could be better but it's on a black shelf and I think it looks just fine. My only regret was painting the controllers, they looked awesome in red and black but the paint has slowly started coming off in one corner after 11 years of use.

That secret of mana super famicom somebody posted in here looks absolutely amazing. I would love to have that.

If you're gonna paint something then do it simple, black is fine, and don't try and put any weird custom designs into it because it will look like garbage.
