That's true 3D though? It's full blown software rendered polygons. If you're going to call it "proto 3D" at least be referring to something like Pole Position, or even Wolfenstien/DOOM style games.

In any case, if you just mean low resolution, low polygon count, low frame rate, untextured 3D, this is probably my favorite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWwtTX8xs4M

"Flat-shaded" is what we basically called it.

Starglider II on the Atari ST is one of my favorite games of all time and was a huge influence on me. Had planet surfaces you could fly around full of weird ships and creatures and objects, tunnel systems to explore, you could fly right off the planet into space and zoom around the solar system in stardrive mode, fight space pirates and steal cargo to trade, skim the upper atmosphere of gas giants and witness flying mechanical space whales.. its designer Jez San later went on to help work on designing the Super FX chip for Nintendo that made Star Fox possible. He was awarded a knighthood and now he makes shitty cryptocurrency gambling games. Guess you gotta make a living somehow.

The very earliest examples of 3D games were IMO called vector graphics. At least the C64, Amiga and Multiformat Magazines called these vector graphics games.

And I'm talking about games like
• I, Robot (Atari Arcade) 1983
• The Sentinel (every single 8- and 16 Bit home computers) 1986
• the Freescape games from Incentive Software: like Driller (1987), Total Eclipse I & II (1988, 1990), Dark Side (1988) and as well their 3D Construction Kit (I still have the Amiga Version of the Kit)
• Hunter (Atari ST & Amiga, 1991) a Proto-Open-World Vector graphics game with many air-, water- and land vehicles years before GTA

I would even go as far as suggesting that the earliest (arcade) games quite naturally leaned more towards 3D gaming because of the very nature of the vector displays (oppose to raster) they used.

And thus the earliest proto 3D games usually were vector graphic games like the Atari ones
>>4603442

Or the wire frame Star Wars Arcade games. After those wire frame games driven by the vector displays, a game with filled vectors like "I, Robot" was quite an achivment.

Mah bois for this genre that i've recently found are both of the Star Cruiser games. Both were on PC98, but the Genesis port of 1 trumps the original game as it was released near 2 and plays more like it. Its original port used turnbased battles, which you can switch to in 2 if you desire, but the FPS gameplay is where it's at,

They're both really fun adventure shooters, with rpg elements, entire galaxies to fly through and land on. You can mine asteroids for ship fuel in space, and fight pirates (which earns you cash for ship upgrades in 2), and landing on planets switches you to a land tank, which you can explore towns and their surrounds and fight through mazelike dungeons as the plot allows. Despite the draw distance, these bits are a lot of fun and feel fastpaced and arcadey.

1's translated for Genesis. 2's translated for PC98 so follow the guide on the patch's site to get that hooked up.

That's the only one of the bunch that really was that fast.

The real (IMO acceptable) speed of Hunter can be seen here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA3pTA2DNhc
But usually those vector graphics games run much faster on the later Amiga models. The processor cache worked wonders on games like these. Not a 3D game, but Wing Commander was almost unplayable slow on an standard Amiga 500, while it was almost too fast on my vanilla Amiga 1200.

I just had to sped up those videos a bit, because otherwise you wouldn't see much of the gameplay, since most of the early 3D games indeed were really slow, especially the 8-bit versions. Hard Drivin' was the worst of those 3D games since it run and with single digit FPS on a C64. And the other ports weren't any good either.

Some of the Freescape games ran at sub-1fps on C64, though at least those games were designed around it. It's funny reading reviews of Driller now, because they spent a large chunk of themselves patiently explaining the concept of a 3D camera and how you could have tens of thousands of "unique" scenes in just one game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmuHF06oJ6k

This time I didn't alter the speed at all. But judging from the comments of the video I used, this speed was achieved by emulation and also because he used a patched WHDLoad version of the game to allow an almost unlocked frame rate that the original game didn't offer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbCjFiHfvg8

Back in the day I first played the game on an Amiga 500 with an expectable framerate.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEr87kq8DBk

But indeed it looks like that game had/has a very active community with all sorts of patches.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY39_a1DMMA

But again with those vector graphics games, the later Amiga models were better equipped for running this game. If I remember correctly it was after all very playable on my Amiga 1200 since even this lower end model had double the clock speed of the A500. And the processor cache also sped up such games immensely.
