Depends. If you're just a weeb you'll find plenty of Japanese games for PC. If you're a full fledged nihongophile the PC-X8 well goes deep. Real PC-98s are getting shockingly expensive on eBay so if you must have one, get it out of Japan through a buying service. In my experience, emulation is perfect though and just using a vintage keyboard and CRT are plenty immersive but I'm not 2% as familiar with the minutia of how a PC-98 should actually behave as I am with PC.

Hardwar. Mix Wing Commander: Privateer with Blade Runner and add a fantastic licensed soundtrack and you get Hardwar as the result. It is incredibly hard in terms of difficulty and maybe isn't the most well-executed in the gameplay department, but what it does have is a fantastic sense of dystopian atmosphere. Be aware that the game uses CD audio, so use the analog cabling that you should already have.

Sounds like a decent haul. Whenever I see older beige PCs, I always take a look at the guts. You never know what type of fun stuff you will find.

My inlaws have a killer 486 desktop in their attic. I keep meaning to tear it apart, but never get around to it. The strength of the case would support my GDM fw900, so I am really wondering what I can do with the guts, and if nothing the case would be useful. My current "PC" uses a 486 case, which was a save from a dumpster, and my beige ps2 IBM keyboard which was a thrift shop find.

Oldies but goodies.

Windows 9X and XP machines are pretty hassle free. The pros of having a period correct PC are that games will/should work right out of the box. Indeed, there's a boatload of fixes out there to get legacy games working on modern Windows (setting up a VM, fan made patches, etc, etc) but it's nice to just install the game and have it run straight away.

I'm not sure how many old PC games are freeware now, but if you like having a physical copy, games of that era are dirt cheap. Granted, there's a premium for complete in big box games, but non-complete games in their jewel cases can be had for 1.00 (thrift store prices) to 5.00 (online prices + SH), so it's cheaper in the long run than if you were buying on GoG

It's also fun playing around with the old hardware.

I got my tax return, and I wanted to try out a J-Win98 build. I have nostalgia for my 286-12/386DX40/486DX4-100 days, and I used my cousin's Pentium for Windows95, but I skipped over Win98, and went straight to Windows 2000 (then XP, to now 7). So any help is appreciated.

I've only gotten these (and a basic CPU cooler not pictured) so far for a J-Win98SE build. What else would you suggest for the build?

I regret throwing out my old computer hardware when I had to move. I did find a couple of DVD drives (ATAPI) that I miraculously didn't throw away, like the one pictured, but I am not sure J Win98SE supports it. I still need a power source, which I am thinking of getting a modern one with some adapters for the old equipment. I read that in Winn98 I shouldn't exceed 125GB HDDs, so I still have to hunt down some 120GB HDDs but are there any modern alternatives, like some compact flash to ATA and programs to partition a couple 120GB drives?

What troubles might I encounter? Such as I heard a Win98 install requires a floppy drive, and I'll have to borrow my 486DX4's floppy drive (but I do not have any more discs), I see there's a floppy emulator, but I do not foresee any need for a floppy drive once it is up and running. Is it possible to go without a floppy drive for the build?

I am going with J-Win98SE for the Win98 games I still surprisingly have, such as Ys Eternal 2, some Evangellion mahjong games, Zwei!!, an alarmingly large amount of Touhou games, and maybe it'll allow some DOS/V games like Princess Maker 2. I hope all the random cheap US Win98 games I surprisingly have would work on such a build too. I missed out on so much, and I have a lot of catching up to do.

You don't strictly need a floppy drive to install Windows 98, but it is the most straightforward way. I would honestly recommend just picking up a $20 Gotek, since sooner or later you'll probably end up wishing you had one. If nothing else they're extremely handy for DOS gaming, so you can stick it in your DX4 system afterwards.

Yes, there are CF-to-IDE and SD-to-IDE adapters, as well as SATA-to-IDE adapters. If it's over 127 GB there are tools that can limit the capacity. So you can use basically anything at all.

Regular CF/SD cards have limited write cycles so they're not ideal to use as boot devices in Windows machines, but they'll probably be fine for a retro gaming PC that only sees occasional use.

That's pretty sound logic. At $20 it sounds affordable, and probably worthwhile. In a couple of weeks, I might get one then.

>>4605239
SATA to IDE sounds best. I appreciate the warning about the CF/SD card, because I don't think the computer will see occasional use, but rather extensive use, since some games like Total Annihilation, Diablo, Quake 3, etc. would eat up a lot of playtime. Could probably find some less expensive drives that way to offset the cost of the adapters. I'll try to look into the tools/programs for limiting capacity but I don't mind being spoonfed the answers.

>>4605378
Impressive you can tell. Voodoo 5 cards go for a fortune (the 32-bit color and higher resolution), and the 5900 does have Win98 drivers. My monitors are widescreen CRT monitors capable of 1920x1200, so the extra horsepower may be needed to drive that many pixels. Also, as a bonus, the nVidia card has a S-video out, so maybe there are Win98 emulators for other systems that can output to my old TV.

Correct. But graphics options are broken in seven(B&W in seven also laggy as hell on my 980/4960x, most likely due to the bug in drivers because it manages to eat up something like 60% of GPU) and beyond, most certainly broken in Vista and maybe not broken in XP(I cannot quite remember) in a way that it's always on minimal settings.
It probably can be amended by tinkering with the registry, though.
Believe me, I've spent a lot of time playing on 166MMX/Voodo 2 so I'm quite familiar with this preset.
It's also tricky to run in Linux Wine: due to the known bug half of the textures would be black. There's an unofficial patch for the wine source(never made it into develop or master), but one can only apply it to the x86 version of wine.

The boxes can switch the location of the spine to reveal the extra info on each game. Shogo came with a game cal Septerra Core, Planescape Torment was paired with Soulbringer, and Fallout 1 came with Fallout 2.

>>4606882
The one pictured was cheap and I knew it had Win98 drivers. I had no idea the 6600/6800 was listed on the drivers site. That's why I am looking for suggestions on what to include in a J-Win98SE build. Is the sound card right, should it have been a different one? I think I also opted for that 5900 because it said ASUS which is a brand I use quite often in computers. A bonus that it is single height, and the cooling seems sufficient (because I heard some Voodoo cards like 3 does not have adequate cooling). Missing out on the Win98/ME generations means my knowledge on these things are a bit weak. When I was on Windows 2000, I had the GeForce 3, just plain 3, no thousands or letters, so graphics cards advanced fast.

Wait does that refer to 128GB partitions or will Win98 actually complain once you go over 128GB on a partitioned bigger drive?

Because right now I have a 250GB IDE in mine that I partitioned into two partitions thinking that would solve the problem.

Should I remove it and transfer my files to two smaller HDDs?

It's the total size of the drive that matters, not the partitions. If you use a larger drive you risk data corruption once you start writing files to sectors beyond 128 GB, since it will wrap around and start overwriting the lower sectors instead. If your motherboard supports 48-bit LBA, I believe there are some modified drivers floating around out there that will work around the problem, but you'll have to do your own research there.

And for DOS games, we used UniversalNeverlock.

Piracy was such a pain in the ass back then because games had built-in anti-copy challenges, like asking you to look up a word or phrase in the game's manual. If you ever lost or misplaced your manual, you were basically fucked. Neverlock patched the challenges so you could get past them while typing any random shit.

like someone said in one of these windows threads previously, there aren't that many good Windows games (especially 3.1) because they didn't really offer features that DOS hadn't. They actually took up more memory as well, hence why "Restart in MS-DOS" mode was a thing.

That said, there are some good games already mentioned in this thread. Also I'd like to add:
- Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV (better than on consoles simply because of the interface)
- Deadlock
- Stars!
- Outpost (though I expect a lot to frown on this)
