So I'm wondering what's the best flat screen I could use for retro gaming that would require the least amount of modification to the gaming hardware. My CRT TV just crapped out on me last week, and since I got rid of it, I've realized just how much space it was taking up. A buddy of mine is willing to sell me an old 42 inch plasma flat screen for 50 bucks, and I'm considering taking him up on this offer.

Just to be clear, I'm not a gaming purist. I don't care about scan lines, and I don't really give a shit about having absolutely perfect audio with the Retro games. I have a Retron 5 to play games on my LED Flatscreen, and I think they look great. I just need something that can play my Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS1, PS2, OG Xbox, Wii, and 3DO decently.

Use a CRT, underage retard.

>> No.4595558

Get a CRT and if you must use an LCD get a 120hz gaming monitor. 42 inch plasma TV will have god awful input lag. Don't even bother.

This. If you don't care about any of that why did you have a CRT to begin with? Just get a cheap walmart flatpanel then you stupid faggot.

>Underage
Yea, I'm 35...so not really underage. Also, I had a CRT because my mom was throwing it out 5 years ago and I just decided to take it off her hands. It had good picture quality, but I honestly didn't see much a difference between it (32 inch Trinitron) and my spare 19 inch LED TV when playing Dreamcast and N64 games. Plus, I have a Retron 5 for my NES, SNES, and Genesis games, so I don't need a CRT for any of my 8-16 bit systems aside from the 3DO.

Thanks for the advice. I read that Plasma TV's were some of the best flat screens for retro gaming. Guess that was wrong?

Good to know. I actually have an LCD TV I could use for the older consoles.

>>4595597
>WHY DO YOU CARE
I see reading comprehension isn't your strong point. Like I said before, SPACE is the issue. I just don't really have the space for a big ass 200 lb TV. I like the form factor of flat screens, and their form factor works better in my game room. That said, I wanted to know what flat screen would be the BEST in regards to screen quality, audio, and input lag.

Plasma is easily the deepest, hottest flat screen and they're being closed out right now. Both of my big flat screens are plasmas. My better one, the LG won't display 240p though. My old one says "Ilo" on it which was some Walmart brand, manufactured by some smallish S Korean company does do 240p but 1080p is pretty fuzzy and mine has everything burned out on it except its component and vga inputs including its hdmis.

Are you me? I just bought a 32" Samsung 1080p smart tv brand new for $220. Plays my old consoles, retron 5 all the way up to my PS3 just tits on game mode.

What does that even mean? This entire statement sounds lewd as fuck.

>mine has everything burned out on it except its component and vga inputs including its hdmis
How does this kind of stuff happen? I keep hearing about people's flat screens and video game consoles just randomly dying on them, but I still have electron equipment from the 90's that's in perfect working order. My 42 inch Samsung plasma TV works as well now as when I got it like 8 years ago. No burn in or shorted components. I also have 32 inch Bestbuy brand plasma that works perfectly as well.

Do you people not take care of your electronics or something? I'll admit, I'm a bit OCD when it comes to electronics and keeping them clean and functional, but damn. I go to friends' houses and stuff, and all their shit is constantly breaking down on them.

I'm pretty sure he was being literal. Physical depth and temperature.

Oh...I thought so too, but neither of my Plasmas are deep or hot, so I was very confused about his statement.

None of those things are universal. You are going to find set from any of those makes that look like trash and have horrible input delay, and you'll find sets that are quite reasonable.

Plasmas are neat, but can be quite power hungry, hot and have their own issues with image retention and depending on the one in question, may not handle what you want to use with it very well, much less without an upscaler of some sort in the middle.

For the two LCD types, you're going to get a mixed bag across the board depending on maker, age, specific model and specific line. Most of the newer ones you're going to run into are liable to be LED backlit.

Connecting any of those consoles aside from maybe the Wii and Xbox (in 480p) are almost without a doubt going to look like hot garbage, several times over if you're just planning on using composite.

If you're dead set on using a flatscreen for older games, look into an upscaler (Framemesiter) or linedoubler (OSSC) and then find a decent modern display from there.

>audio
The audio you're going to get out of pretty much any flat panel is going to be complete garbage. Get a separate solution for audio or just deal with the trash.

Thanks. OP here, best advice in the thread. I'll look into an upscaler definitely. Any recommendations?

Those inputs were burned out when I got it at Goodwill for $10 in 2011

>>4595684
I mean color depth and temperature

Of the consumer flat screen TV technologies, plasma is the closest to CRTs in terms of black blacks and hot colors. They even bloom some although their reds can be a bit sizzly.

It does seem like OLEDs are making real advances though and I don't thing there are any 4k plasmas that even exist so it probably won't be long until OLEDs are the flat screen of choice but for right now dollar for dollar plasma can't be beat in my book.

OSSC or Framemeister are the only "quality" choices out there.
I don't personally use either, or play older games on flatscreen outside of an occasional bit of emulation, but if I was going to go for one, it'd likely be the OSSC. Lower delay, cheaper, and still seeing support where ass the XRGB Mini (Framemeister) isn't.

I'd full recommend looking through that link rather thoroughly first, before making a decision. For either of these, you're going to be buying quite a number of cables to actually use your consoles with them, but the picture quality increase will be well worth it.

OLED definitely does blacks better than plasmas.

I believe it but a 4k OLED in the same size by the same manufacturer costs 10x as much as the plasma I bought over two years ago - but in another year or two I'll probably start looking at them.

Thanks. This is exactly the information I was looking for.

I'll do some research and eventually purchase a decent converter/upscaler.

Plasma + shaders hands down. No motion blur. Still shit though - get a CRT

For retro games? Are you nuts? Those things don't have scalers. Consoles hooked up to them will look like absolute dog shit.

No more than the average LCD TV

They're all going to look and sound terrible. As for lag it depends on the model

That's not gonna do shit for him if he wants to use the hardware he already has. Emulation would be much simpler to pull off well, yes, but an upscaler is going to be his best bet for a decent experience otherwise.

If you want an actual response instead of a bunch of autistic screeching, visit rtings.com and check out the input lag ratings. Get a TV with low input lag and enjoy your games.
