So guys, what do you think about Forge town?
Was it a right decisions to force developers to cancel this town? Was death threat mailed to lead game designer the reason why Heroes 4 were so,,,, different?

Would have been fun, certainly better than the last minute take the elementals we already have and call it a faction. Would have been interesting as a second expansion instead of SoD. From a fan perspective it was a bad idea to scrap Forge, but may have made sense as a business decision. No, H4 was always going to be different. There were some things that needed more balance testing, but they were likely always going to be in combat.

I guess the disconnect between might and magic and heroes of might and magic was too great to fit cyborg people into heroes 3. I'm still not sure if it would fit the art style. Also I think heroes 4 was just rushed because everything 3DO was putting out in their last years were rushed and garbage.

>Have 2-3 main army heroes, have extra heroes for the purposes of funneling troops / capturing
That's not exactly true. You should generally have one "Big Dick Main Hero" who is your can opener and primary damage dealer, BUT it's never wrong to train secondary heroes to do your battles if they can fill certain niche. Some single player maps favor:
>having a Logistics-specialist hero just to traverse stuff really fast
>having a dedicated magic hero who will be light on actual army, but have massive Spell Power to simply force breakthroughs with high damage spells
>having an Intelligence hero just to out-sustain the AI
>splitting your army into two powerstack armies if you can for more efficient exploration
e.g. if you play Tower, it's often efficient to, say, by week 2, to split your army into Nagas and Master Gremlins / Master Genies; one hero picks up some Nagas and supports them with some spells to make sure they don't die (5-6 Nagas can kill a LOT early on) and your Master Gremlins travel with 6 Genies split into a stak of 1, so that you can stack buffs on the Gremlins while they shoot stuff down.

In MP especially, you mostly use secondary heroes to "chain" units so that you can expand faster. Basically it means bouncing your army between a few heroes so that you can maximize movemnet points to get the most shit done in a given day.

Shooter stacks can be dealt with (sometimes you have to if e.g. Master Gremlins are on your only Lumber or some bullshit like that):
>Tactics
>stacks of fast (usually flying) units
>potentially +3 morale (it's not very reliable, but you can use the morale boost from e.g. Leadership or arties to make sure you reach enemy fast)
>some specific setups, e.g. Solmyr with a single stack of tanky units can just spam Chain Lightning on the archers while keeping his units (say, golems you don't use) constantly spamming Defend; or, for instance, Fortress' Reptilions good at trading with other archers while your fliers close in, etc..

I would just streamline ALL specialties to work like this:

>Hero gets +5% per level to the numeric impact of his specialty.

So at level 20, Craig gets +60% damage out of Expert Offense, Tarzan gets +30% out of Armorer, Solmyr's Chain Lightning deals double damage, Stoneskin/Prayer gives stats twice as high, Resurrection brings back twice as many creatures etc. Unit specialists double their units ATK/DEF and give them +2 speed instead of the base +1. Lowlevel-unit (1,2,3) specialists start at +2 speed already and at lvl 20 their units speed is +4.

Also, spell specialists get one small effect right away - so Ciele keeps her initial +50% damage (so she gets +150% at 20). Others get like +1 AoE change / casting cost halved, etc. Like I said in the previous thread.

Forge was a bad idea not because being disconnected from rest of HoMM3 (do people even know Inferno is literally space invaders + three-headed doggos?), but how cheap the unit design was: literally unit X from faction Y armed with some mad sciencist weapon. That was fucking awful all by itself.
Fandom sperged for unrelated reasons ("IT DOESN'T FIT, BECAUSE SCI-FI!", since most of people don't know world from HoMM is a science fantasy with half of stuff being descendants from crashed spacers and high-tech weapons being regulars in M&M games), but the general conclusion was still right - Forge just didn't fit into HoMM3 and Conflux was a good solution to that.

Also, anything that went with HoMM4 is solely related with 3DO going out of business in the middle of game development. And yet despite that the game still has a fond place in my hearth, even if only thanks to superior campaigns.

Does anyone know of any way to get bigger town/battle/etc screens with HD mod? The only option I see is lowering the resolution but that leaves me with either bluriness or inconsistent pixel sizes when using nearest filtering (even when trying with 1600x1200 which is exactly twice the game's original res, which I thought would give me perfect pixel doubling with nearest filtering). There isn't any need for filters. They just need to add proper integer scaling to make everything bigger without any need for filters. Most emulators have this so you can have 100% accurate scaling. What I'm talking about is basically doubling the size of each pixel (1 pixel is now 4 pixels). That keeps everything sharp without any need for filters.

- Saw some russian gameplays and such.
- Finished Yog's campaign on Hard.

And finally after years and not peeking on youtube, I've managed to beat scenario "Mandate of Heaven" on Hard.
- I'm pretty sure, that this might be "babby's first adventure map", but damn I could love every part of design in this map. The sense of exploration (I never played MM, so I might miss a lot of here) was great here w/ decent challenge of roaming enemies.

Anon who had trouble getting perfect scaling with smaller resolutions here. Turns out I'm fucking retarded. The problem was that I tried to use twice the game's original resolution, but what I had to do was instead using half my monitor's res (720p from 1440p). That with Nearest filtering is exactly what I was looking for. Now I get bigger windows and the pixel art is 100% sharp and unaltered.

Are you using HD mod? Anyway, you can't have perfect scaling with a lower res with 1080p because the game's original res is 600p, which is more than half of 1080p.

Basically here's how to achieve pixel perfect, unaltered, sharp upscaling:

1.You need a monitor with vertical resolution of AT LEAST 1200 pixels
2.Select 32-bit (stretchable) GDI as your graphics mode
3.Choose any resolution that's exactly your monitor's native res divided by a whole number AND that has a vertical resolution of AT LEAST 600 pixels.
4. Select Nearest as your stretch filter.

I would reinstall the game in a different location then, I put all my DOSBOX games in c:/. You could make the whole heroes 2 folder read/write globally, but it is just easier to do it from scratch. Autosave happens at the end of every turn, so the game has to try to write the file. Also the GOG version comes with both a Windows and DOS version, although the music is different which you could try.

Playing "Sander's Folly" and to lesser extent "Goldheart" should be mandatory here. I would recommend playing "The Outpost of Progress" and "Story of the Fool" too, but it requires you to start a multiplayer hot-seat and play to players at the same time.

Mine is the fact that fucking spicy birbs are faster than teleporting devils.

I can add that I get triggered that devils who teleport through smoke and fire are not immune to fire.

The combo of spicy boiis and devils (fastest unit in the game and fire immunity) with armageddon could have been bretty good and give Inferno a great boost.

You don't know what you're talking about, do you?

At no point in any of the HoMMs before this expansion were any hints to its sci-fi nature, so most people thought of it as a high-fantasy TBS. The reception of Forge was mixed due to fans not being introduced to canonical sci-fi backstory unless they played M&M games, thus thinking that the city is not thematically-consistent with the rest of the game. At the time, there was a pressure from unsatisfied fans to not include any sci-fi elements in the story and some mouth-breathers even sent death threats to NWC employees. Than 3DO chose to scrap it - end of story.

An overwhelming amount of 'fanbois' still feel the same way about the Forge. If you don't like people having differing opinions, go join the Russians and mod that faction in the game.

Kreegans were never introduced as aliens in HoMM3 itself. HoMM also didn't have a single hint of sci-fi anywhere, it is pure medieval fantasy through and through. I know M&M proper has sci-fi shit in it, but when HoMM3 was made the ship had already sailed. They should have included sci-fi stuff in 1, 2 and RoE to ease players into it.

Forge absolutely didn't fit in HoMM3. It also had shit unit designs desu.

The real question is what percentage of HoMM players had known anything about the M&M's lore at the time the expansion was being made?

I have nothing against Jon Van Caneghem and the fact he immediately mixed fantasy and sci-fi genre in the very first M&M, but the first HoMM was presented to the unknowing audience as a cookie-cutter high fantasy with elves, wizards, warlocks etc. There was hardly any story in the original HoMM, let alone anything hinting at sci-fi.
M&M7 was published in '99, the same year HoMM3-RoE was released. I don't know what the overlap between TBS and CRPG players was, but do you believe most of HoMM1,2&3 players wanted to play seven M&M games spanning all the way back in '86 to familiarize themselves to the lore?

Hell, the only time I even saw the M&M games mentioned was in the slideshow (with some other NWC games) integrated into my HoMM3 installer.

It absolutely did fit HoMM 3, just as Sci-Fi fit into Might and Magic. It's simply an issue of overly zealous fans who have no idea of the wider lore.

The Kreegans might not be introduced as aliens in HoMM3, but they are. The Colony Zod is basically this giant alien colony full of the Kreegans and alien technology such as laser blasters.

Even if we put your strongest argument forward, i.e. the fans aren't introduced to this lore unless they played MM, that still doesn't justify sending the developers death threats over Forge.

A: They are wrong about Sci-Fi being jarring in this setting. It belongs into the Might and Magic setting like swords and spellbooks.
B: A simple internet search even at the time would have lifted them out of their ignorance about Sci-Fi and Might and Magic. Since AT LEAST Might and Magic 6, Sci-Fi has been a major aspect of every plot.

Their reaction was wrong on a lore level, on a human level, and on a level of being a fan. They can't be that big fans if they don't know half of the setting they're playing in first, second off, they don't demonstrate openness to new concepts.

Look at Conflux. It is a boring hot mess of a faction. It has generic units based off the four (five) Elements, and they're basically extremely good at magic. That's it. Every other faction in the game has a unique, unpredictable twist to them, but as soon as you read "Elementals" you know they're going full ancient philosophy and just tossing the four elements at you.

Forge > generic ass Conflux every day.

This is a good example of when you should NOT listen to rabid fans.

>> No.4574107

>>4574030
Not those anons and while I do agree to an extent, the Forge we have been presented with sucked major ass just from a visual design standpoint. The units were hot garbage and the town screen itself was ugly as sin. If you wanna go the sci-fi route, make it look like it fits instead of slapping some industrial shit and modern-looking scyscrapers together. Have a consistent design that works visually like all the other towns. The only defense I could put forth for it is that it probably was still early in development but I don't remember enough about it.

Most people didn't even have dial-up then. I agree they should have stuck with Forge, but there would have to be an intro campaign to merge correctly. The designs were uninspired, but we don't know how they ultimately would have turned out. About the Kreegan, a lot of the people complaining hadn't watched the MM6 opening. Simply starting with that and expanding the opening cinematic would have been doable and not that hard. I feel this was more a miss by NWC because they didn't do it before RoE and the conflict was inevitable.

The series has been sci-fi since MM1. If you haven't you should read the MM2 manual and the spaceship logs on Darkside.

Don't worry about these two (>>4574454 >>4574459), they're just being mean.

I looked at your maps and they're pretty solid - not my style since they are a free-for-all type (no teams, nobody has an advantage, no special objective etc), but that's just a personal preference.
Your map-making skills obviously improved over time (from 1->6) - your maps got bigger, you became more confident with using different terrains and more creative with the way you decorate your maps - so keep up the good work!
One complain that I have that is actually relevant in multiplayer is the issue of native terrain, since all your maps use grass terrain as a default terrain all players will travel on. Here's a link if you want to read more about it (http://heroes.thelazy.net/wiki/Terrain)) but the short explanation is that each Town has it's own native terrain. Creatures fighting on their own native terrain get +1 attack, +1 defense and +1 speed. Grass is a native terrain for Castle, Rampart and Conflux and in most of your maps you have a player that starts either with a Castle, Rampart or a Conflux by default. This means these players will get an unfair advantage over others. If you want to make things balanced, use a terrain not native to any fixed player Town as a default one.
Also something purely related to aesthetics - put different decorations on top of each other to create an illusion of uniqueness. Download my concepts posted here (>>4563226) and here (>>4561924) and see how much decorations I used just for filling out a small area.

Thank you for your reply!

I did these several years ago when I was still a pothead and played Heroes with a friend of mine. I didn't touch the game in years now. I know about the concepts of diversity and all that. If it doesn't show, then maybe I didn't upload all maps, cant remember It's really a long time ago. Maybe 10 years or more.

I am aware of the native terrain thing. I just liked the grass terrain. And we decided we don't care :) remember, they were made for us alone.

Then there is the thing with some maps using some "races" as default starts. We enjoyed these more then others, so if I wanted to make a map that had less then 8 different start zones, some of those we hated wont be an option.

Last, about advantages: There are custom events, some of them weekly, that benefit the human player and the AI players in different ways. Some boost the AI quite a lot (like giving them a lot of resources).

I will check which maps I uploaded to see whats in there later.

Funny how everyone I know picked the same 2 guys (the male human and dwarf) in any team. I guess the other guys are too ugly. Me personally I like the female goblin chick with short hair.
As for your question, don't min-max your characters. I run a paladin / thief / monk / sorcerer currently and I totally went mace for paladin because stun is free and powerful.
Also why did you learn so many useless skills like Unarmed?

Let me tell you something you wretched little man: if you want to get fucked up, you drink real alcohol, like vodka or whiskey. If you want to get a little buzz and enjoy a refreshing beverage, you have a nice light beer. If you're sitting around drinking stale brown piss and pretending to enjoy it, you're a faggot. Imported and craft beers are a beverage relegated only to the biggest of hipsters and homosexuals that want to fit in and imagine they are men of taste. They're the kind of retards who sit around sipping their beer like it's fine wine, imaging themselves to be some kind of autistic connoisseur. No, you do not have good taste, you are not special, you are not a man of refinement: you are just a simple faggot in a sea of simple faggots who would rather endure disgusting European dirt water than a nice refreshing light beer. Now, save this picture and make a point of looking at it every day and know that this corn dog represents you, and the man looking at you represents every heterosexual man you've ever come across. Look at it, look at it and let it serve as a personal reminder to never replicate this faggotry in the future.

Good day sir.

I'm gonna assume you actually mean "Castle", as in, the human/gryphon/angel Castle in pic related.
In which case, if you truly suck ass, here are some basics that work for most towns:
>Gold>XP in chests
>use the gold to buy dwellings; your goal is at least level 6 dwelling (Castle: Cavaliers) by end of week 1, + Castle if you can afford it;
>Castle in particular sometimes (very rarely) allows you to get Angels in week 1 with a very specific beeline build
>just for safety, though, upgrade your Archer's Tower (Marksmen) early on and get Cavaliers + Castle, can't go wrong with that
>"might" heroes (Castle: Knights) have stronger and more resilient units and can learn just enough magic to buff their entire army and kill shit, better secondary skills, traditionally better as "main heroes"
>"magic" heroes (Castle: Clerics) can potentially fight efficiently with Magic Arrow (if you get it) and their extreme late game (Implode/CL everything, teleport around the whole map) can be strong too
>solid starter heroes include: Valeska, Tyris, Sorsha, Adela (starts with Diplomacy, which is broken OP, can be considered also a bit of a crutch, so YMMV) and Caitlin
>split your Pikemen into stacks of 1-1-1-1-1-rest of Pikemen
>those single Pikemen allow you to use the most basic vs AI trick, which is baiting with fodder
>single Pikemen stacks are often preferred by the AI in battles, so they waste time killing them or just getting to them (slow units like Dwarves or Zombies in particular can be kited this way)
>you can also use your single Pikemen (and other units) to surround your Marksmen to make sure they're never in melee (which is where they lose a lot of effectiveness)
>early creeping with this strat should be done as such: surround your Marksmen with units, send small Pikes as bait, liberally use WAIT command to avoid the "broken arrow"
>use whatever spells you can get; Magic Arrow, Shield, Stone Skin, Bless, Bloodlust are all really helpful early on

>> No.4578923

>>4578910
Some common terms:
>"Broken Arrow"
When it's your shooter unit's turn, hover over the enemy unit. If it's too far away from your shooter and you don't have the right artifacts (or if they aren't Sharpshooters, which they probably won't), the arrow will be "broken" = you deal 50% damage. If the enemies are slow walkers you should often press "Wait" in the bottom right corner; you don't lose your Marksmen's turn, they will just be moved to the end of the queue. This way they will be more effective. Of course, don't use this against other shooters or units that will reach you first. "Wait" command is essential to learn the tricks of to really efficiently wage battles, though.
>"Powerstack"
Whatever is your biggest unit stack and your biggest damage dealer is your Powerstack. Often, with Castle, esp. if you have a lot of level 1 dwellings, your Powerstack will be your Pikemen/Halberdiers. The idea of a Powerstack is that it can one-shot enemy stacks without them being able to retaliate, or at least deliver a hefty amount of damage. You generally want to avoid trading damage with your powerstack (e.g. attacking someone who will survive the attack and counter), which is where the following technique comes handy:
>Baiting the counterattack
Remember those stacks of 1 Pikeman I told you to get? You can use them to "soak up" the enemy's counterattack. Every unit gets a single counterattack (except Gryphons and units under spell Counterstrike). For instance, if you want to poke a handful of Rocs with a large powerstack of Pikemen and are afraid that the Rocs will live and take out some of your Pikes, you should instead send a single Pike to punch them first; then, when the Powerstack follows up on that attack, their powerful punch won't be countered.
(cont.)

>> No.4578932

>>4578923
>
>Chaining
An advanced technique, you can live without it generally if you're new, but remember that your movement speed depends on the speed of your slowest unit. You can use "chains" of secondary heroes to do multiple things:
>Reinforce your main hero who is away on a big campaign too far away from his capital city, and doesn't know Town Portal yet; simply have secondary heroes pass each other units all the way until you reach your main
>Have your main hero give all his slowest units to a "patsy" hero at the end of the turn so that he can start the next day with more movement points (but if you get attacked by AI in the interturn, you're fucked)
>Finally, you can have multiple heroes cover more of the map by simply passing each other the army and clearing out stacks.
I wouldn't bother too much with intricate chaining when you're just starting off, but knowing technique #1 is going to save you a ton of headache.
>Retreat and Surrender
Important shit. Retreat sacrifices your hero's entire army, but you can rebuy him at a tavern with all his artifacts and level ups and a small starter stack of units. Surrender pays a fuckton of gold to the enemy hero (can't be used in battles vs neutrals), depending on your army size; if you can pay the fee, your entire army and your hero is available for repurchase at a tavern. Surrender can be used as a "poor man's Town Portal" if you have enough dosh, where you purposefully surrender your hero to the enemy just to rebuy them in a tavern in the same turn. You can also employ gay Retreat/Surrender tactics to constantly harass an enemy hero with spells.

>> No.4578952

>>4578910
>>4578923
>>4578932
And also, as a general purpose tactic for keeping your shit alive: before engaging shooters, split your Cavaliers/Gryphons/Angels into a few stacks. Standing on a tile adjacent to the enemy shooters means they can't shoot, they can only use their melee (and most shooters, unless they have "No melee penalty", are not very capable in close combat).
Another trick: If you're blocking a shooter with a single Gryphon or Pikeman and he will die if he punches the shooter (enemy stack is something like 12 Beholders), you don't have to attack the shooter with the unit; just park the unit right next to the shooter and the shooter will be forced to move.

Anyway, as you build up, you should aim at getting your Angels + Castle at around week 2/3, unless the map is poor and/or you're playing on 200%.
>Why not Capitol first? Some guide from 2001 tells me to do so
You can probably go Capitol first when you're new, but
>frankly, that's boring, you spend the first 2 weeks not doing anything because you have no units and just building up your town, especially on maps where you're boxed in and can't just pick up a ton of free shit off the ground with no guards
>you will not have the incentive to learn how to wage early game battles with just a handful of units
>it will just be a poor habit that you will have to shake off once you start getting good

Only get money buildings if you have a strong core of units to fight with (Marksmen + Cavaliers) and you're out of ways to make gold in other ways. Or, if the map is REALLY poor and you're completely out of options.

>> No.4578983

>>4578952
And, for a final point: always make sure your hero picks up a magic book (as a general rule "Might" heroes have to pay 500 gold at a Mage Guild, Magic heroes get it for free). Even if your hero has very little Spell Power and Knowledge, spells are really powerful. You can boost your SP and Knowledge fairly easily with artifacts once you get going, and just a few points in Spell Power is enough to maintain a few utility spells like Haste, Slow and Blind (1 point of SP = 1 turn of duration). You should learn an Expert Magic (preferrably 2; in single player, you will probably enjoy Earth and Water the most, but Fire and Air are also great) and, if the game looks like it will take long (it's a large map, lots of enemies, etc.), definitely Wisdom. Spells are really powerful and you should learn the gist of it. "Expert" magic is important not only because it increases the raw numbers on spells and reduces their mana cost, but because it turns many spells of a given school (Slow, Haste, Forgetfulness, Bless, Curse, etc.) into Mass versions, which are a huge benefit in combat and which are readily usable by anyone.

You never asked whether your question pertains to Single or Multiplayer, and very often this kind of question depends on map type. Or even SoD vs HotA.

That said, >>4583294 is a very subjective list that doesn't take a lot of things into account (Tower goes highly up on S maps, because Solmyr + Master Gremlins will fuck your shit up; Castle gets brought down a peg on poorer maps where you can't just 1 week Angels; Rampart is lackluster in the late game; Fortress is super good on maps with lots of Dragonfly Hives, which are conveniently most random map templates). Any tier list of towns isn't going to be a numeric list and towns themselves are more nuanced than most give them credit for.

>>4586069
Harpy Hags are essential to 200% survival as Dungeon, esp. with the Evil Eye building having such a busted cost, because they're fast, non-retal flyers. They can kite walkers for days, they're quite durable because Overlords are good heroes. Parking themselves next to archers isn't even a big problem because archers hit for pitiful amounts of HP in melee anyway. You can easily fit tech up to Manticores + Castle + upg. Hags on a rich map. Hags also rock if you have level 2 dwellings nearby, which you often do.

Also, Dungeon doesn't deserve a low position on the tierlist simply because of how strong Shakti is as a starting hero (Offense / Tactics / LOTS of Trogs), and Summoning Portal cheese can firmly make them have a scarier army than others.

There's two Tower towns on that map. One to the south-west on the overhead map which is extremely hard to ever lay a claim on, and the one that's to the east and has a random event that assigns a whole bunch of Castle units to you. Rush through the underground as fast as possible, get the Griffin Conservatories and Angel dwellings. If you're fast enough you can rush down Castle Haret because it gets too much stuff. Or you can only flag the Angel Dwellings and keep harvesting them from Portal of Summoning + Portals of Glory until you achieve critical mass.

I would either:
>learn to play the fucking game
Inferno's strengths have been documented in numerous threads by people who actually play the game instead of meming (to recap: Efreeti are very cheap and efficient level 6, Devils are terrific for claiming Dragon Utopias and efficient fighting in general while not being among the most expensive to raise, demon farming remains a strong, if micro-intensive strat, strong Armageddon synergy), as well as ways to alleviate their weaknesses (start with Ignatius, Fiona or Calh to bolster your early game, hire a non-Demoniac/Heretic hero as your main to reduce the chance of getting Fire Magic in a game where you don't necessarily want it)
or
>install HotA
where Magogs got a QoL upgrade that allows you to almost completely minimize the possibility of friendly fire casualties
but most importantly
>lurk more
and
>stop being retarded
guaranteed grail at day 1 would be abso-fucking-hilarious especially on any map or template which lets you double-build. think 1 inferno with a guaranteed grail won't get week 1 devils, snowball and utterly destroy your shit? try 2 infernos

the post isn't about Necro or Conflux being OP, it's about "fixing Inferno" in particular, when it's perfectly fucking capable of shining in the multiplayer meta you're satirizing against the other towns that, conversely, have no restrictions placed on them. will it take more effort? sure, but so will learning to play tower or even stronghold, which is the trickiest to play of the "popular" towns. except nobody ever mentions that because of solmyr and crag memes.

and again, HotA fixed the problem with two runaway factions without actually crippling them + actually has a dedicated online lobby instead of fucking with Gameranger, so go ahead and play that if that's your problem

like I'd understand it if Inferno was literally fucking shipped with a note that buying units causes you to get a chirograph letter engraved onto your back and if you buy too many the chirograph is finished with your hellish signature and your soul becomes banished as a result
>however
none of this happens

Guaranteed spellbook no matter what hero you pick is a big deal, Spell Power and spells like Magic Arrow have really good value in 1st week, Master Gremlins are fantastic in the early game esp. with some dwellings (which aren't uncommon), and you can pick Solmyr, The King of S.

Small maps generally may end before you even have a chance to get to the late game. They're often fairly open-ended. Even if you can't reach and eliminate an opponent by week 1/2, you will find Neutral towns that Tower can take with extreme ease, so you can double-build early units. Of course you aren't thinking of stockpiling Titans on S, but just doubling down on mass Gremlins is enough to win, and getting to Nagas / Castle is perfectly affordable in case the game somehow drags long. At such small army sizes, Gremlins + 1/1/1/1/1 Master Genie is also very potent..
In early Restoration of Erathia, Red Tower rush with Solmyr was so potent in week 1 that it was nerfed, mostly by how you couldn't just hire a fuckton of Gremlins from constantly hiring new heroes (HoMM1, 2 and early 3 didn't have the limitation that deemed every hero purchased after the first two on a given week to only give one unit).
And again, Solmyr's impact on week 1 can't be understated.
Anecdotally, my best Barbarian Breakout 200% result stemmed from Solmyr abuse.

>> No.4596564

>>4596501
>>4596554
Also, Tower might be expensive if you look at it on paper, but if you are going MGenies / Naga, you honestly only need a bare minimum of Gargs, no Golems at all (too slow for S, you want to rush rush rush), Mages aren't numerous enough yet so they're not your main shooter force (worth keeping around 1 for the mana discount), you only need a few MGenies to stack buffs on your powerstack.

So in effect most of your gold gains (which should be fast, as, again, this is S, you're rushing and expanding ASAP) aren't going to stifle your army costs much at all. The biggest problem is getting 6 Nagas week 2 day 1, and it's often prudent to forgo Castle if the setting is poor, because 5 Nagas on the field are worth 6 in garrison.

It's really the mid-game where Tower suffers the most, because
>level 2 spells are more common so your Gremlins can be Blinded/Lightning Bolted/whatever
>low army speed starts mattering more as enemy heroes get Tactics and access to their fastest units, and can often traverse to you on turn 1
>Tower heroes are well known for sucky development
>you probably can't afford Titans yet and Giants by themselves aren't impressive or don't unlock any cool strats like Angels or Devils; in the meantime, Fortress is preparing to get a free tope with just a stack of Hydras and 6 Flies while amassing a Wyvern stack, and Castle is abusing Convs to get Angels, Rampart is peaking with the Gray Elf/Unicorn rape train, Dungeon is in a similar boat as you but Reds are actually good units on their own

So Tower is amazing in extreme early and extreme late game.

Also, another underrated aspect of early game Tower: Scholar on almost every hero is detrimental in the long run (poor Neela would be top tier without it), but it comes to your early advantage because you are likely to get Scholar, and then you can easily:
>learn other heroes' starting spells
>learn good spells from shrines without wasting precious turn time, all you have to do is send a scholar patsy towards one
>learn stuff from mage guild without having to revisit it with main, so you can non-stop expand

I have a confession to make.
I only play play Heroes 3 for the WoG mod. I got bored of vanilla many years ago and messing around with WoG settings breathed new life into the game for me and by now I've probably played like 10 times more hours with WoG than SoD. My favorite aspect is the option to make things scale endlessly. Revisiting stat bonus structures every month, increasing gold and minion production, and allowing heroes to permanently summon elementals for absurd mana costs are all really fun. I've been having a blast running through the campaigns with all the broken shit.

However, building a stack of 5 Deaths (immune to weapon and death-based damage, 60 initiative and strong single-target attack) and one Lich Queen sitting in the back row (necessary hero if you want to progress thru the Undead campaign) destroying everything on the map is one of the highlights of my entire gaming career.

Well, you just need to upgrade two of them to Warlocks and then to Wraiths and the job's done - put them in the front row, give the meat sponges (fighters, zombies, templars) to another hero, buy another set of 2-3 initiates and repeat the process.
Funny story, originally I used Nosferatu with this strategy until I went into the Accursed Armor mission which pits you against other undead. The tower that contained your mission objective (the Accursed Armor boss unit) had a Wight that you couldn't kill unless you had few talismans to damage it, other solution was purchasing the Lich Queen just to finish it off.
This game had so many exploits, cheesy strategies and quirks - as I said, it's an amazing game.

Tempest Giants and Elder Ones can absolutely fuck your shit up, but you will most likely soften them with magic if they're outside, or buff your units with protection spells you found if they are in the city.

>Also, such army would get fucked big time by Dragons and other high end all 6 hitters
Well, everyone gets fucked by Dragons and boss units (Demon Uther, Talandrielle etc), unless you have a unit immune to that particular unit's damage source (Black dragons can't do shit to you, though), buff the shit out of your units or debuff the shit out of those units.

>and don't even get me started on fucking Life damage dealing capital defenders.
Yea, this composition is not meant for Capitol attacks. Including Spectres and Phantom Skeletons would be mandatory in such case.

>Balanced Nosferatu (deals Life damage, which is irresistible [all other Vampires do so too by the way)

No 5 deaths can absolutely kill a dragon as long their max health is higher than the dragon's base attack. And if you're so willing to trivialize this discussion by including potions, what prevents me from buying and using a ward spell and shrugging the dragon's elemental attack entirely.

This [Death x 5 + Lich Queen] party composition is not practical in small scenarios or in multiplayer, but it is much more potent than you'd like to present it. I can auto-resolve 95% of encounters with no damage being dealt to me, and use resources, spells and buffs/debuffs liberally for the remaining 5% (sieges, tough opponents & bosses).

It's closest you can get to an actual HoMM III expansion. It's visually and narratively (Cove representing Regnan Empire) compatible with the originals and the addition of new Castle, units, artifacts, miscellaneous decorations and object as well as some other quality-of-life improvements and rebalances (Necromancy nerfed) make it something worth trying out. It's free, so download the expansion from HotA team's official site (turn on your malware software if you're scared of being scammed) and install it following the given instructions.

Am I the only one who prefers Sacred Lands to Disciples II? It's probably nostalgia talking for the most part, but I find SL's artwork and atmosphere so incredibly good I keep going back to it.

>> No.4601380

I only played Disciples II (I skipped III because I heard it was nowhere near as good as II) and just couldn't make myself play the previous one because how dated it looks in comparison to II. I had a same problem with HoMM where I didn't want to play HoMM I and II because I started with III.
As far as I understood, Disciples II storyline is built upon the foundations set by the ending of Disciples I (Mortis taking revenge on Dwarves etc) but I didn't felt like it was necessary to understand the overall plot in its sequel.

Undead Hordes are everyone's favorite faction (because of the "free win" ghosts that let you get massive XP boosts if you get lucky and the "can't hurt me" Death and the super cool Phantom Warriors). But when you get more experienced, you realize that Wight > Death and that on anything but the largest maps, Templar tree > Skeleton tree.

Legion of the Damned are seemingly the weakest faction initially (because they're so hard to play) but then you realize that Gargoyle + Incubus + [fill out the rest as you want] destroys everything. With the Incubus tree, you can also lock the caster at the Demonologist for reasonably powerful AoE damage, no need to waste time leveling the Devil tree (that takes incredibly long to get to AoE).

Personally, I'd recommend Warrior-Lord -> Counselor / Gargoyle in the middle / Incubus / Infernal Knight (+you can always get the Demonologist for last slot AoE after putting Counselor to the front row late game). Alternatively, keep the Duke in the front line and you have the Demonologist + Incubus backline sooner. If you roll with this, you can even afford to go with the Mage Lord.

Also, the Dwarves are simply the worst. All their heroes suck (no fliers, worthless rune placer) and their units are too slow and the support unit doesn't make up for it.

>But when you get more experienced, you realize that Wight > Death and that on anything but the largest maps, Templar tree > Skeleton tree.
Wights are amazing due to their 'Drain level' ability, but Deaths are nothing to scoff at, as their secondary DoT attack is a lifesaver when trying to conquer a Capital quickly (you'll obviously need a Spectre, Phantom Warrior or a paralyze-inflicting artifact with you). Agree with Templars being much better choice on smaller maps (no Death immunity though).

>Legion of the Damned are seemingly the weakest faction initially (because they're so hard to play) but...
I play Legions exclusively as a Warrior Lord - Duke looks way too cool not to be used, and the additional healing is a lifesaver for a faction that has no spells or units to heal themselves (even Undead have some sort of pseudo-healing attack available with Elder Vampire's Life Drain Overflow). Agree with Demon tech tree being rather XP-heavy, but Legions single-slot front-line unit is kinda boring (although the description says they heal faster - don't remember if it's true). My ideal late-game composition is:

Back row | Front row

Top | Incubus | Duke |

Middle | Onyx Gargoyle |

Bottom | Tiamath |

>the Dwarves are simply the worst
They are not that bad - leveling up your Loremaster, increasing his initiative, buffing him with Archduchess and watching him deal 300 damage to everybody before they could even attack the lower-initiative front-line units was a thing of beauty.

The Mountain Clans have strong units but the lack of fliers and large XP costs make exploration agonizing. However, using Loremaster/Mountaineer/Elder Giants buffed by the Alchemist line to nuke everyone (while still being tough to kill) is too good to pass up.

It was even worse in the first game where the Clans did not only get any fliers, but also had heavily gimped movement points

Yea, their biggest disadvantage is their low initiative, but that's compensated somewhat with their high HP pool (probably highest in the game) and access to every type of elemental damage (Earth - Loremasters+Stone Giants; Air - Tempest Giants+Elder Ones; Water - Ice Giants+Sons of Ymir+Mountaneers+Hermits; Fire - Flamecasters), high physical damage, damage+cure/extra attack buffs and access to Haste, Seafaring, Forestwalking, Healing and Armor spells. I mean, they can be potent as fuck.

Since we're talking about dwarves, here's a one dwarf-related fanart of Heroes III.

It's more that other rod planters do something useful - Legion rod-planter spooks units, Undead rod-planter paralyzes units, Empire rod-planter heals units and Dwarf rod-planter just sort of punches units (and he's an ambassador). Elf rod-planter is absolutely useless as a main since there should be no empty spaces in your party for you to summon treants anyways.

>> No.4601880

>>4601875
I'm not so sure. Empire's one is largely redundant, because fem healers are generally much better. Undead doesn't gain all that much from level ups. Legion can be very strong, but again, gains fuck all from leveling and can be extremely annoying to use too.
Dorf rod isn't very flashy, but ultimately seems to be the most practical and scales well compared to others.

I also visited every marletto tower, Colosseum etc. And the monks when my skills were fleshed out. I did this on every map.

Campaigns always ends when you start to like your hero. Now I am leaving a level 35 Kilgor with over 50 in attack in favour of a level 1 Adrienne and more fucking Castle gameplay. Castle is so fucking boring.
