What a fucking game. Even playing through it recently, it still manages to be incredibly engaging. The soundtrack and world design really is perfect to me. The materia system allows for some real fun shenanigans and while the game's difficulty isn't exactly very high due to it, it's still fun.
I know its popularity tends to shine a very critical light on it for a lot of people, but I'd be happy if we could have a pleasant little FF7 thread all the same. Let's hear /vr/'s choices:

Tim Rogers' Found in Translation series is making me wish I could I experience Aeris' personality in Japanese. Tifa is kind of a dork by comparison, but in a good way.

I don't know if it's the best one, but I like it. It's a lot of things. Spooky, foreboding, a little sorrowful, somewhat alien-sounding, and it has a degree of intrigue.

It properly conveys all the things the Forgotten Capital should. You feel like you're among the bones of a people that was never (and will never be) fully understood. The strange stillness and lack of life, even enemies, creeps you out a bit. And most of all, you feel like something bad is going to happen, and it does.

I like Barrett. I think he has the greatest growth and complexity of anyone in the game. Cloud doesn't really grow, he just becomes less broken.

I've been playing a little bit of the PC version on my legacy Windows 98 machine, mostly because I wanted to try out the Yamaha S-YXG100 Plus softsynth on an actual game and FF7's PC version has special support for XG softsynths. I REALLY dig the atmosphere of the slums and the dark undertones of the AVALANCHE missions, but I can't imagine the game focusing on those when you got that long-haired twink and the cute flower girl got murdered the fuck up to worry about. A shame. Eh, at least the music is really good. And Tifa is pretty fine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-88lztWg7w

The PC version got a bad rep for sound, mostly because of preteens who watch hack streamers who don't know one single shit about MIDI in older games. FF7 on PC has special support for XG MIDI playback and even came with the S-YXG70 softsynth to play the MIDI in that variation, and yeah, it sounds pretty good. Now, you won't get voice samples in One Winged Angel but its still a blast to listen to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSkip48Z3Bw This one is pretty great as well.

Now, before you mention it though, no, you can't use the softsynth with DOS games on legacy hardware, I guess because Windows treats it and DOS programs with two different sessions of use, and DOS only taps into DOS-specific uses for a sound card and S-YXG is strictly Windows. I did hear that sound cards like the Aureal Vortex 2 and some sort of Yamaha card can use the S-YXG in DOS but I haven't seen any video evidence.

As for your atmosphere comment, if you haven't played through the game before, I think you'll be pleased that it retains a noticeable atmosphere and ambiance even in locations outside of Midgar.

Awesome game. Played it for the first time like two years ago so I don’t have childhood nostalgia for it, but it’s easily one of my favorite rpgs. Might be in my top ten games period, honestly.

Favorite song is yuffie’s theme.
Yuffie is probably my favorite party member. Red 13 and Barret were also great though. But let’s be real, by far the most useful party member is Mr. Pointer. Game would’ve been borderline unplayable without him showing where you are.

I like both Aeris and Tifa. Forced to choose, I’d probably pick Tifa. She’s got a sort of gentleness to her that I like. And holy shit those titties are to die for.

E. Skill Materia is the fucking best.

i love FF7, warts and all, but i think acknowledging the warts is fine. it's a good 7/10 in my book, with some stellar moments.

>best song in the game
too many great songs. what i loved is that the PS sound chip was an evolution of the SNES sound chip, so uematsu got to explore the vast array of new options and tools within an environment he already acquired mastery in. red book audio is a meme.

i'll nominate the main/map theme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UARM4q7hHU

the first time we hear it was when the party first steps outside midgar and enters the world map. seeing the world open up to this tune was magical. it's somber and timid at first, as if still under the impression of midgar, before it slowly makes its way into greater heights fifty seconds in. it's not an even way out, constantly lapsing back into melancholy, but time and again it breaks out in a tune as elegic and jubilant, even brave, as it gets.

that's sort of my other major reason too. the theme goes places, like a story within a story. a full seven minutes of everything you experience in the game, tinged with melancholy and the oppressive feeling of ominous and constant danger, making the brief moments of relief and elegy all the more uplifting.

>best party member
gotta admit they effectively all feel sorta same-ish due to the materia system. can't tell.

>tifa or aerith
can't decide, won't decide. it wasn't until my third playthrough in 2013 that i really understood them. they were a spunky tomboy chick with titties and Flower Girl with Mysterious Past to me when i was younger. with every playthrough, i felt fonder of both.

aerith' playfulness and mischievous streak are fucking great, and her subtle disconnect with the rest of the party stemming from her inner sense of duty towards her ancestors, something literally no one else on the world can fully relate to, make her fate even more tragic. i love tifa's genuine care for cloud, her humbleness, and her maturity.

Vincent. Sure, he's outclassed during the later half of the game, but you can purchase a rather overpowered gun with max accuracy from Costa del Sol. Pair that with Deathblow + All materia and grinding becomes trivial.
