Taste is subjective, Assfaggot. I have big American arms and most of my sticks are attached to big American cabinets not a 3 pound plastic box I have to use my button hand to hold down on my lap. I have Japanese sticks too but I honestly prefer the sensation of using a genuine Happ made in the USA when practical (stationary stick). I am presenting an alternative perspective.

Happ sticks are great if you're a fucking gorilla and treat your hardware like literal shit. Which is why they survived so long in US arcades. But they still managed to get broken by assholes intentionally abusing them. RIP.

In the end nothing is the "better" part, but using a bunch of different parts will allow you to find your sweet spot. My personal preference is all Seimitsu, buttons and sticks, but preferably the LS-40 that you don't really see anymore. Seimitsu buttons have a bit of resistance in that you can rest your fingers on top of them without worrying about an unintended input going in. Sanwa buttons are super-sensitive to the point that a slight graze of your fingertip will register an input. It's amazing and very impressive stuff. Not that I have any faults with the Sanwa buttons, but I prefer the Seimitsus.

Also after using a joystick that has a bit of tension (most if not all of Semitsu's joysticks do), going back to a Sanwa JLF feels incredibly wonky and somewhat sloppy. Not talking bad about the stick, but when you start experimenting with various parts, you can really cater to your tastes when it comes to arcade controls. Sometimes certain joysticks are for different scenarios. I prefer the Korean joysticks (Crown make them) for most 3D games, as the rubber tension system they use feels really solid.

happ sticks are fine for fighting games, I wouldnt never want to use a shmup stick on a fighting game

I have Sanwa parts in my arcade stick, but I'm kind of thinking of putting in a Seimitsu stick because I've heard they're better for shmups due to having a smaller dead zone? I don't know dick about the difference between Sanwa and Seimitsu though.

There's barely any noticeable difference between the two brands in feel. It's not worth the cost of upgrading to go between those two in my opinion.

I build sticks with both and use them pretty interchangeably. I think a better shmup-centric upgrade would be an octo-gate if you don't already have one.
