1. Get a shit-ass 80's Zenith TV
2. Hook up an original slot-loading NES using RF
3. You are allowed to start with 3 games, chosen at random. (No, you don't get to choose. Kids back then just played whatever their parents got for them)
4. On weekends, you can pick a specific game off the list to "Rent" and play for that weekend only.
5. On your birthday, you can add another random game to your collection.
6. On christmas, you can add another random game, and a random "unique" controller (maybe you'll get an NES Advantage! But you'll just as likely get something like a Power Glove)
7. At no point can you play anything besides the NES and your randomly selected game library.
8. If you do use the internet, you can only use it to look through old issues of Nintendo power.
9. After 4-5 years, you can get a Genesis or SNES (not both) with 3 randomly picked games, and start the process all over.

Who wants to take this challenge up? I already lived it, so I'll pass. Any takers?

Fuck that. I want an expensive hi-tech nineties video editor's screen. The authentic experience is: I CALL THE SHOTS NOW, MOM AND DAD.

Limiting yourself like this would legit make you appreciate stuff more. It's pretty much proven. It's when we become spoiled for choice that we lose our interest.
>Kids back then just played whatever their parents got for them
If they had shitty parents, sure. I requested plenty of games as gifts and usually got them, typically only at birthdays or Christmas.
>After 4-5 years, you can get a Genesis or SNES (not both) with 3 randomly picked games, and start the process all over.
Whenever I got a new system, I don't think I ever got more than one game to go with it at first, and it was usually bundled with the system. Any kid who gets 3 games on the day he also gets a system is probably pretty spoiled, especially with how expensive games could be back then, and would likely get way more games of his choice during the course of a year than you're proposing.

Could do it your way (one game at launch and two or more later), but consider it front-loaded.

By the time I got an NES, I had SMB/Duck Hunt and TMNT 1. (At the time, 2 wasn't even out yet)

Also you should definitely disable secondary monitors when emulating if you have a secondary monitor. I also always get .pdf of a manual and read through that first. I don't play other games until I'm done with the one I'm playing.

11. If you pick an NES or SNES and have decent social skills, once every few weeks you can play a mainstream Genesis title for a few minutes, preceded and followed by watching a few hours of gameplay when you go over to the "Sega kid's" house. Increased library if you live in a somewhat affluent area and they have Sega Channel.

I had quite a few games because my brother was 4 years older than me, and the NES was bought for him, so by the time I was old enough to play, we were sitting on about 6 or 7 games, most of them pretty good. We also had a C64 before that, and quite a hefty collection of games for that, too. I had good friends within walking distance that I comfortably trusted to borrow/lend games with, and a decent video rental store barely a mile away. I rarely ever owned more than 10 games per system, but the ones I had, I loved, and I still got to try a ton.

>>4586626
I always kick myself a little bit because I played RF for YEARS on a TV that was composite-capable. The jacks were just on the other side of the TV in the back and I never really looked back there because it was up against a wall. Didn't realize it until I got an N64 in 1998 and moved the TV back from the wall to get a closer look.

You're probably spoiled, no offense.

I had to wait until games went on sale at Hollywood Video and bought them for $20, which was a ton of spending cash for an eight year old.

The rest of my games were just whatever mom found at garage sales. I had an NES and some of my games were literally just games I found, including Double Dragon 2 in the McDonald's parking lot.

I got my Genesis because my neighbors were Nebraska Cornhusker players and they just gave it to me when they graduated, cause they were moving.

I owe them my memories of Road Rash, Mutant League Football, and Sonic 1, I started getting my own games after that

How old was your bro when he stopped playing video games? The only system I remember my brother playing a lot was our C64 and NES. He played a little Mario Kart on SNES, but by that time he was losing interest. Last time I saw him touch a video game was about 1999 when my friend was over and we were playing Buck Bumble on N64 and he thought it looked fun. He probably played Wii sports because his gf had it at one point, but that doesn't really count.

>>4587019
>You're probably spoiled, no offense.
Different anon. I don't think getting one game per birthday or Christmas counts as "spoiled". Especially if it's your only gift, or at least your biggest. Your parents just sound like they were very conscious about spending, or maybe just hardasses.

Official /vr/ authentic arcade experience

1. Get an entire basement arcade setup with at least 10 machines
2. Make sure each machine can handle actual tokens and is not set on free play
3. Disconnect random buttons on at least two machines. Don't tell them. The broken-ness is a "fun" surprise.
4. Discalibrate the colors on at least one of the machine's CRT monitors.
5. Invite some friends over. (yeah, I know)
6. Give them 8 tokens each, give yourself 8 tokens as well.
7. After all tokens are gone, that's it. Come back in two weeks!
