This. Above all else.

I live in a PAL region so I already got shafted when it came to quality in games. I didn't have a wealthy upbringing and my only interaction with the PS2 as a kid was playing it at friends' houses and occasionally borrowing one. Even so, they were some of my fondest memories and when I got older, I'd decided I would build a collection of everything I enjoyed and finally enjoy it at my own leisure.

And then I learned about scalpers.

I collected well over 200 PS2 games at extortionate prices before finally deciding I'd had enough of being robbed and decided to just pirate everything. Devil Summoner is great but it's not fucking £80 great.

Anyone who talks shit about piracy and emulation for moral reasons is literally scum. I bet you idiots would all rather live in a world without old beloved movies and TV shows because their owners burned, deleted or outright disowned them.

Bootleggers are heroes and preservation is an art. Fight me.

The scanline flicker you get when you have more sprites on screen than a console can handle. I don't mind the slowdown, but the flickering annoys me.

Shilling for Famiclones, Flash carts or emulation frontends. I hate sifting through all this viral marketing when trying to browse online retro communities. I mean, I have nothing against using any of these methods to access retro games, I'm just tired of sockpuppets and bots blatantly pushing their advertising. Anyone interested in using one of these methods is perfectly capable of loading up Google and researching it for themselves. They don't need it shoved in their faces every time they try to have a conservation about gaming.

I've seen shilling for the R5 POS, but I've never seen anyone shilling flashcarts or GUI's, or any other famiclone really. Hell, I have difficulty getting people to even talk about frontends for MAME, where the hell are you finding people not only willing to talk about them, but shill them?

There are some games like Mother and FF2 where it's as though they never tested the game to make sure you leveled in a way that made sense.

You also see this in fighters where the characters are sometimes so unbalanced it's absurd.

Not much for me, apart from obviously bad old games (like the aforementioned shovelware on consoles/PC). Most of what I dislike is elements of modern crap creeping in in later retro games, mostly during the 5th gen.

"Relics of the arcades" are what made home console games good to begin with and why they began to suck later when they abandoned that influence. Complaining about this just screams you're a /v/-tard.

This shit always made me wonder. FF3 is a prime example.

You get 5 batches of jobs, one from each crystal and another near the end with the two uber classes. You get the first batch near the beginning of the game, and you don't get the second until nearly halfway through the fucking game. It's immediately followed by the third batch, then you don't get the 4th batch until right before you get the uber jobs. Shaman and Warlock are the upgrades to White Wizard and Black Wizard respectively, but you don't get them until 1-2 bossfights before you get the Sage class that makes them completely worthless. Why these classes weren't in the 2nd batch of jobs along with the Knight and Karateka jobs(physical class upgrades), I will never know. Why the job batches aren't better spread out instead of dumping the majority of them on you after half the game is done, I will never know. At least they did a better job of spacing the jobs out with 5, and making the job system more useful than "switch everyone to this class for this boss fight/area". That's just the job system issue, that doesn't even take into account entire sections of the game where the recommended strategy is "run away from everything, they are all too powerful at your current level".

Mother is a directionless mess on it's own level. Switching between tight corridors and wide open areas at random, enemies that vary wildly in difficulty in the same area, and adding and removing party members making you either painfully weak or absurdly overpowered for the area you are in. A good portion of the game is sitting around and grinding up another 5-10 levels when reaching a new area, just so enemies stop being able to one-shot you. At least what I've played of it. I got tired of it somewhere EVE.

Shit that is required to use, but it uses up ammo or doesn't have full time uses.
As much as I love Mega Man, there's quite a few segments that piss me off with this shit. The Boobeem Trap is an obvious choice to further prove my point, but the section from Wily 1 in the first game pisses me off so fucking much.

Not only do you need Ice Slasher to freeze the fire at a specific moment, but you need Magnet Beam to get up a wall, which, if you don't use well, you can run out of. And some players might had not even known about the Magnet Beam at all! The worst part is that if you wanna grind for energy, well, have fun dealing with Big Eyes, which have boss level health and can kill you in 3 hits!
