ONE JOB.

>> No.4583840

If you want the serious reason, it's because Sega realized they didn't have anything ready to compete with the polygonal processing power of PS1's vector unit (GTE) so they threw in an extra Hitachi SH-2 CPU in an attempt to bridge the gap.

Obviously this was totally futile. A generalized processor like a CPU can't compete very well at processing polygons with a specialized vector unit.

>the Saturn isn't ready in time and people want 3d games

Sega: Egads, Sega is ruined! But what if I were to create a cheap addon and disguise it as a stopgap til the new console. Ohohoho, delightfully devilish, Sega!

>gamers come in
Gamers: SEEEEEEEGAAAAAAAAA!

Sega: Oh I was just releasing Sonic 3d Blast. Isometric exercise. Care to join me?

>gamers shake head, close door, Sega runs off to the dev shed outside to make a cheap mushroom addon

Sega: Well I hope you're ready for mouthwatering 32-bit games!
Gamers: But I thought we were having Sega Saturn.
Sega: No no, Sega 32X.
Gamers: You call 32-bit games.....Sega 32x.
Sega: Yes! Old company recipe. Patented addons. Yum yum, Knuckles Chaotix.
Gamers: And you call these 32 bit despite the fact they are obviously 16 with expansion chips.
Sega: Yes!

>Sega goes to the kitchen, Let's Go Away can lightly be heard through the door and the Hornet is parked in the middle. Sega rejoins the table with a yawn.
Gamers: Good LORD what is HAPPENING in there.
Sega: Sega Saturn?
Gamers: May we see it?
Sega: No.
