Does anyone know where I could find a working rom of the FDS SMB2 for nes? I know there's conversions of it out there and I've been searching but can't seem to find anything, really want to make a repro of it

Try here:

I believe this is what you are looking for, smbj2.zip

http://home.comcast.net/~olimar/NES/

Somehow I remembered this as this guy helped with developing nesDS for DS flashcarts, I stuck his SMB2J NES rom on my R4DS long ago.

When I looked into this a few years ago I collected:
anonfiles.com/file/f27d572468e5c042117380a1c6b65f21

>smb2j.nes
>Super Mario Bros. 2 (J) (FDS Hack).nes
>Super Mario Bros. 2 (J) (Kaiser Pirate) [p1].nes
>Super Mario Bros. 2 (J) (LF36) [p1][b1].nes
>Super Mario Bros 2J + SMB1 Chars (Hack) [b1].nes
>Super Mario Bros 2J + SMB1 Chars (Hack).nes
>Super Mario Bros 2 (Lost Levels) (Unl).nes
>Super Mario Bros. (Alt Levels) [p1][!].nes

The first one "smb2j.nes" I think was the closest.

Also in that zip is:

>Disksys.rom
>Mario Bros. 2 - (the Lost Levels) (J) # FDS.FDS
>Super Mario Bros. 2 (1986)(Nintendo)(J).fds

Just pop those in to an emulator that supports FDS games, and you can make a direct comparison. I use NesterJ on PSP.

Thanks so much, exactly what I was looking for. I just wasn't really sure what to search and the one rom I did find was missing the title screen image

Thanks, I'll have a look at some of these too

Okay, the smb2j.nes there is the same one I included in the file above. It seems to be the best one out there.

I am wondering if that one in particular is good for a reproduction copy, if the MMC3 hack means it is more likely or less likely.
Mappers are always a concern when it comes to NES titles.

I guess we need someone with a reflashable repro or PowerPak to test them all out.

Or a rom dump of this baby.

Not sure what you mean. The MMC3 hack means it's made to work with MMC3 mapper rather than FDS. I have an MMC3 pcb lying around I could use

Ah, I see. Sorry I'm not actually terribly familiar with how mappers actually work.
All I know is that the smbj2.nes rom is a very faithful if not perfect conversion from FDS to NES, not the technicals of it.

I plan on making a reflashable MMC3 repro so I'll test it on that first. If it works in an emulator it will most likely work on the real hardware
