At the least the land is not square. A lot of sand box games these days just plops you onto a square piece of land and calls it a day. Also I never realized how many damn mountains there were in FF6.

FF worlds are donut shaped since the north and south wrap around each other like east and west do.

>> No.461828

>>461690
"torus" is another name for a 2D map that loops horizontally and vertically.

a more realistic representation of a sphere on a 2D map would wrap the world on 1 axis only like a cylinder; you would also move more slowly the closer to the center of the cylinder you get.

I don't quite remember Terranigma's world. It looked awesome, but... I think it was squared, actually...

Secret of Mana, though, really had a spherical world!! Flying with flammie felt goddam awesome!

>> No.461901

>>461381
Wait, so if you flew to the northernmost part of the world, then kept going, but then the world turned flat, you'd be on either the left or right side heading south, right? Because of how a map represents the world, is by making itself essentially a flat globe?

>> No.461937

it's called a 'map'

It's because it's a map and not actually the world.

I remember one time while my brother and I were looking around for different cheats (within the game's code) for FF3/6 with a cheat engine (ZSNES's I think), we stumbled across a code that allowed you to walk the overworld on foot from the perspective angle of the airships. It was pretty nifty, and I wanted to try that again, I just forgot what block of code took care of it, and what bit-depth it was at (probably 2 bytes).

>> No.462040

While on that note, I'm wondering what code to also look for to change out airships mid-game. I want to fly the Falcon in the WoB, and "salvage" the Blackjack in WoR.

Because using basic topology you can fold a square into a sphere, which is the actual in-game geometry of the world map. Check out fundamental polygons on Wikipedia or something.

You can also "fold" a square into a real projective plane and a Klein bottle, two surfaces that can't be embedded in three-dimensional space without self-intersections. Yeah, it's an impractically mathematical notion of "fold", but you can certainly fold a square into a torus (doughnut), and it's perfectly feasible to represent in code.
