Hey /vr/, I'm interested in giving Final Fantasy series a try. I want to know:

>What version of each game I should play (because I know when it comes to older games a version/port to specific platform can be better than other)
>What order I should play

Personally the ones that look more appealing to me (visually and gameplay wise) is FF1 and FF9. Thanks in advance!

FF 123 Nes

Snes FF 3 to 6

Play mystic quest.

Then tatics.

Then FF9 and maybe 8.

Avoid 7.

Might wanna play the origins versions of 1 and 2 to avoid the bugs, but aesthetically the NES versions are much nicer. Definitely play NES 3.

this guy pretty much has it right

My best advice would be to avoid advice by storyfags unless you're a storyfag yourself. Then I can't help you other than recommend just go read books or something.
Ask which game has the best mechanics, dungeon design and the like.
As for me, I'd recommend the first 5, 6 games or so and not much more.
For 1-2, the PlayStation 1 version.
For 3, either the original or the remake is pretty fine.
For the SNES ones the originals; some of the later versions are OK and have some neat differences but they are good enough.

1/2/3: Play the NES versions.

4/5/6: Playstation or GBA. These fix some of the bugs and other goofs while still being close to the original experiences (aside from the PS1's FMVs). The music tends to sound shitty on the GBA ones though if that matters to you. However, if you're playing on emulator and don't mind doing a bit of legwork, there's also fan patches for the original SNES games out there.

7/8/9: No salient difference between the PS1 and PC versions, but the original FF7 PC release had worse-sounding music. That's probably not still true for the more recent PC releases, I imagine.

FFT: Play War of the Lions (PSP/tablet) if you can, it really cleaned up the game in terms of balance/bugs, plus there's bonus shit that doesn't suck. The new translation is a love it or hate it thing for people it seems.

>Personally the ones that look more appealing to me (visually and gameplay wise) is FF1 and FF9.
I would say follow your instincts here. If you like the NES as a console FF1 is fine. FF9 is also a safe choice, kind of a well-made middle ground as far as FF goes.

>that shit taste
filtered. Here's the actual list OP:
1: GBA. Purists will tell you it ruins the game's balance and difficulty, but it's such a basic game that it doesn't have much of that either way. No reason to linger on this one, so might as well play the most user-friendly one that requires the least grinding.
2: GBA. No argument here: it has the most content, its weird leveling systems are the most polished in this version, etc. No reason to play other versions, unless you want a more difficult experience, in which case PSX is fine.
3: NES or PSP. They're both balanced very differently from each other. Might as well pick whichever one has the more appealing aesthetic for you, and if you like it enough to replay, play the other version some time.
4: PSP or DS. Much like 3, these are balanced differently enough that if you care for gameplay, it's worth playing both. DS provides a pretty legitimate challenge here and there, be warned. Avoid GBA, it's buggy.
5: GBA with the sound and graphics patch. Has updated content, the best script translation (seriously the other versions are dry as wood).
6: Same as above.
7: Any version, they're all the same.
8: See above.
9: PSX. Steam release is okay but the HD graphics look pretty weird against the low-res backgrounds.

As for any sort of play order, you really can pick any of them and start anywhere. The thing about FF is that the games are all pretty different from each other, so if you don't like one, you might like another. My only suggestion is that I'd recommend you play some of the older games before playing the newer ones. For example, I'd recommend you play 1 first just because it's so basic, and I'd highly recommend playing 3 before you play 5 because 5 is basically a direct upgrade. If you're a big storyfag, go for 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
I'd also recommend Tactics at some point, because that game's awesome. Play the PSP version, but MAKE SURE you get the patch that fixes the load times.

Most of the Final Fantasy games are worth playing at least once, as there isn't a bad one in the bunch.

A good entry point is 7, since it's very easy to complete and the story is compelling. After that, play through 4, 5, 6, 9 and 12, in any order you want. They're all very good entries in the main series.

Also, Tactics is amazing, even though it's a difficult strategy game instead of an RPG. If you're willing to invest the time and effort, FFT will reward you handsomely. One of the best stories in all of video games IMO.

You're the shit taste. You listed baby easy versions. FF7 isn't a Ff game.

Even if you don't particularly like the game, telling someone to avoid it is purely idiotic. Nobody that plays games is going to take anything you say seriously if you say stupid shit like that. I highly recommend returning to being a normal anon.

Not entirely /vr/, but here you go.
There's a pastebin floating around somewhere for the definitive versions of each Final Fantasy. I know the Final Fantasy general on /tg/ has it.

Not him (I'm >>4568303 ) yet I dislike FFVII as well.

The point isn't liking VII or not. The point is that suggesting someone doesn't play it alienates them from the conversation, and there's a plenty high chance that they might like it. You shouldn't be making recommendations if you can't overlook your own personal preferences. Going "I didn't like it, therefore, I recommend against trying it" is weapons-grade stupidity.

FF1 - PSX
FF2 - PSP
FF3 - Famicom
FF4 - PSP
FF5 - Sufami fan translation
FF6 - GBA w/ sound restoration patch
FF7 - Steam

Start with 4 which is pretty basic customization-wise but provides a decent challenge in places. If you want more story go with 6 or 7, if you want more gameplay try 3 or 5. FF1 is pretty barebones but still a cool game in its own right. I feel that FF2 is pretty much a spiritual predecessor to FF4 in many ways, but it's controversial due to a strange character growth system.
I hear good things about FFX, so you might want to check that out as well.

IX - PC.
I - The PSX version.

The others:

II - PSX. The PSP versions of both I and II are WAY too fucking easy, and I say this as someone who thought that people who claimed that were bullshitting purists.

III - PSP. III is just a mediocre version of V no matter what version you play desu, so best you play the most fun one.

IV and its sequel - PC, or if you care about playing the "original 2D" game, then play the PSP version. The PSP version of FFIV takes the GBA script, finetunes it and borrows from the 3D remake. There's a sound option between the remastered tracks from the 3D versions and the original soundtrack. It also includes everything from the later ports (a static party at endgame is scrapped and you can now swap characters. The 3D version unfortunately lacks this, but the balancing is off with the characters you aren't "supposed to have" so it doesn't matter all that much, really). Like the PSP versions of I & II it's noticeably easy though, and the RNG is totally fucked so you may sometimes notice encounters between every three steps and every 50 steps. The PSP version includes the original game, its shitty interlude and its mediocre until the very end sequel.

V & VI - GBA with the restoration patches. Or play the PC versions if you aren't anal over the new graphics (they look better in action, but don't tell anyone on /vr/ that).

VII, VIII - Steam.

There is NO reason to play any of the original releases. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

>>4568535
There is. FF3 sounds and looks way better as an 8-bit game and actually seems somewhat groundbreaking for 1990.
I recommend playing the original releases if you want authentic experience. Original FF5's fan translation trumps every official attempt at bringing the game to the Western audiences.

It's not that visuals are irrelevant to enjoyment, but I'm not gonna let visuals stop me from enjoying a game. They can enhance a game that's already good, but they can't save a game from being shit. This is video games 101 stuff, come one.

>> No.4568875

My personal opinion
1) PS1, streamlines the experience without completely murdering the balance like GBA/PSP
2) GBA, simply the most complete version of the game
3) NES and DS are so different from each other there's no real point comparing them. Play both if you can.
4) PS1, I'm not a fan of the updated GBA/PSP graphics and bonus content and it's the closest you're gonna get to an official English release of the SFC version. For the love of god avoid the After Years. DS remake is great in its own right but should be played after.
5) GBA with sound/color restoration hacks. Best translation and most content.
6) Ted Woolsey Uncensored hack for SNES. Keeps the classic translation (the GBA version is a weird mix of new translation and pandering to the original) while fixing the censorship issues.
7) PS1 if you have a CRT or PSP to play on because otherwise the backgrounds will look like shit. If not, PC. There's a retranslation patch but I haven't played it yet so no comment.
8) See 7
9) See 7
Tactics) War of the Lions with the slowdown and aspect ratio patches. New translation is a bit too up its ass in faux-British but at least it's better than L I T T L E M O N E Y

We get this thread which gets the same answers all the time. Honestly should be put in the sticky at this point (though it won't be)
