I'm curious - why do you have a master system and no MD/Genesis when a MD/Genesis has almost perfect backwards compatibility (and no addon is needed if you use the mega everdrive)?

Not a criticism by the way, it's just uncommon to see a MS with no MD, particularly a MS II.

This is just what I have in the bedroom. I have a few genesis model 1s, a couple model 2 along with sega cd and 32x (and other various consoles) in my basement setup.

There is actually a model 3 genesis sitting on top of the pvm in the pic above. It doesn't normally sit there, just for the pic. Model 3 outputs RGB natively (others do too) but it only outputs mono sound. It's physically smaller than the other genesis models so I usually use it on this small stand.

My wife grew up with a master system so she likes to play astro warrior at times. I keep it there so she can destroy zannoni when she feels like it.

Ten years ago I just might've. It's irritating that those glass inserts for Ikea cubes appear to be cheap and common there but basically nonexistent here. I'm going to be moving into the big house over the next couple years so I'm starting to allow myself to think about the remodels. I always felt guilty visualizing living here in the small house here since I knew it wouldn't be until after my grandma was gone but the next transition is hopefully going to be a lot happier since it's because my family's getting bigger and it's just too big for my mom now. There's a lot of interest in 3DO among my friends too. It occupies a certain mysterious border area where obscure meets modern. My full on party space is currently limited to just my man cave which has been getting pretty stacked with treasures and less with people but after the move I'll hopefully have a party barn before I'm too old to even have an interest in partying.

Better be careful mate, cassettes are becoming the new hip thing

I theorize it's because young people (read, 20 and under) are fascinated by an age of physical products you can hold and feel. Having grown up in a web-enabled, all-digital world, where music, movies, pictures, etc. can all be transient and ethereal, I think there are a lot of younger people who want to own something real.

But it also means getting a good laugh out of people who overvalue old media.

This is a neat solution to the cube problem, but it looks like you have the same issue I have where there's no clearance to use cartridge-stacking peripherals like Sonic & Knuckles or the Super Game Boy.

I like my setup, and I was trying to keep it low-profile because I play sitting on the floor or on a bean bag chair and hate craning my neck up, but I wasn't thinking about cartridge clearance. As it was, it was hard enough to find a TV stand that was deep enough and sturdy enough for the monitor and speakers.

I thought about collecting for laserdisc for a bit. I was even lucky enough to be able to TRY OUT a laserdisc player and borrow some discs for FREE to see if I like the format or not.
It's certainly fascinating, but the quality of video, and risk of disc rot turned me off from collecting them. I just tried to balance out the positives and the negatives of collecting laserdisc and their were unfortunately more negatives than positives to me that made them not worth the effort for me.
But I'm not dissing anyone else who collects them, they ARE cool, they're just not for me.
I'll just stick with vintage games and vinyl for the most part. As if I need another thing to collect to blow my money on.

There's a long standing belief that vinyl has a fuller, sometimes called warmer sound quality. It's analog, so it's an actual recording of the music and not a digital one which is just a series of 1s and 0s strung together to emulate sound.
There's also the topic of it's intrinsic value as a physical media, something to hold. The experience of sitting down and actually listening to the record and having to flip it over once one side is complete. The artwork is on full display and not some tiny image on a phone.
The idea of owning a physical music library over a digital one that you can't touch and will someday be gone is also present.

>> No.4558127

>>4558086
No I understand the differences with analog vs digital which is why i see the point collecting records of music recorded via anlog. However most if not all music today including the literally who band that poster listens to probably records via some digital mix box or whatever which means you are c0onverting 1, 0s into analog waves which seems redundant to me as you wont get that static analog feeling.

4558137

>>4558058
The point of both is physically owning an object that represents the media you appreciate. The inconvenience of obsolete physical media actually forces you to engage in a more active way. The act of listening to a record is more intentional, as opposed to "easy" streaming etc. which is incidental. When you put a record on, you are kind of committing to listening to it.

VHS isn't as interesting to me because I was more exposed to it as a kid, and thought it was crappy even back then. Laserdiscs stand out as "cool" in my mind, like something I would've fantasized about owning in the 90s if I were a millionaire, just like a NeoGeo. But as I've begun accumulating LDs, I've noticed that I also just love the era of movies that the format covers. VHS would scratch that itch too, for some people.

I've mentioned it before, but most of the beatles albums are a good example of this. A few years ago they released a flac (or some type of lossless) high bitrate digital files on an aluminum apple thing. It is digital and sounds way worse than the originals on clean vinyl. I think the lossless apple thing was digitally remastered. If you listen to a quality rip (or the record) it sounds far better.

It's pretty sad when even the beatles content owners do a shit job "remastering".

No point for studio level films of the era shot on 35mm (like Terminator, Ghostbusters, Lethal Weapon, etc). But for B movie Horror, Action, Comedy, Erotic Thriller, it's worth it for the better artwork (see pic vs. the DVD artwork http://www.joystickdivision.com/2008/04/joysticks_the_greatest_video_g.php)) and the "grainy" picture that often adds to the feel of these low grade slasher, martial arts, zombie movies (these movies often look worse when they get a DVD release, since they're basically just rips from the VHS or lazily transferred from the original tapes [most of these movies were shot on tape anyway as opposed to film, so VHS level fidelity is good enough]).

And like LPs, there's a lot of obscure crap that never saw a DVD release.

I had some 8-track tapes that became unplayable as the rubber parts of the mechanism inside decayed into mush. Definitely. There's some production houses like Code Red and Drafthouse who do restorations and digital transfers of obscure 70's and 80's movies for the sake of preservation. And if you have any such obscure VHS films, probably a good idea to make a digital copy.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say. That VHS and laserdisc have comparable quality in general? They really don't. Laserdisc has more bandwidth, more TVL discernible, doesn't degrade in quality over time or through copying, drastically better audio options (which is why there are a fair number of music-related discs). Those benefits only matter if the disc is mastered well. Some of the early DVD releases looked much worse than their VHS counterparts in some frames due to bad encoding, but nobody ever said DVD is an inferior format in general.

Or maybe you are trying to say that Laserdisc is better than VHS? In that frame you posted, there is a lot more detail visible on the LD side. Look at the lines on the garage door, the wrinkles on their outfits, the details on the badges.
