How likely is disc rot if you keep your games stored in boxes in regular room conditions? Is one format of disc more likely to get it than other?

And how soon until gaming on retro disc based consoles will become impossible without burning discs.

we all rot anon

I have 30+ year old discs that read perfectly. 0-1 C1 errors. So a well made disc can be as good as new 30 years later and will probably be just as good long after that.

Dry, room temperature without temperature fluctuations, no light. They can stay fresh for quite the time.

Keep them in their original cases along with their manuals. In addition to being nice to look at, manuals do a brilliant job of absorbing and evaporating incidental moisture from normal humidity assuming you don't live in the rainforest. Also don't store them in like your uninsulated attic or metal shed or the back seat of your car in the summer.

I've never had a professionally pressed CD rot on me. CD-Rs that I've kept in the car for years have rotted, though.

They can, I have encountered some. Extremely rare though.

I have some Sega CD games that have a few pinholes in their data layer despite being otherwise immaculate. I have a feeling I might find some in my 3DO collection if I went through it too. Nothing pressed by Sony though.

In the early 90s I used to have alot of older teen friends with cars that would not take care of their CD collection no matter what. Drove me so crazy the first thing I would do when I started buying CDs is make a copy for my car. I still keep all my originals in a cool dry storage place and have not seen any disc rot yet

Depends on the pressing quality but you will be most likley fine. Just backup the discs and be happy. If it actually is rotten in the future, you still have the data at least.

Also, (mostly applies to music cds) be aware that early disc pressings like 82, 83 mostly used nitro lacquers for the label on the discs. These eat away the aluminium "foil" on the disc. That are the tiny holes you see when you hold the disc against the light. You can certainly hear these holes as cracks in the recording.

Rotational Velocidensity was bad enough that it started infecting other boards. Stop spreading this meme.

I should probably stick some paper in with my copy of Mega Man Legends, the one PS1 game of mine that I don't have the manual for.

So long as you store them properly it isn’t a problem. I have a few CDs from the 80s with no disc rot, and don’t show signs of it.

Honestly this. Luckily PS1 and PS2 emulation is pretty good now. Not perfect but getting there.

I already have a Blu-Ray disc of Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection which doesn't suffer from disc rot and has every classic game truly worth playing, so who cares?

Castlevania is stiff and slow and I haven't even heard of the rest so who cares? They were just third-party games that were made for a quick buck unlike Sega's first-party masterpieces.

>> No.4564134

>>4564112
Castlevania is supposed to be stiff. Super 4 and all the games after it are abominations (except Chronicles).

As for the rest, you are really missing out big time and highly recommend you play them. They truly show off what the Genesis was capable off and are fun too.
