I'm working on a mix/collage of experimental music and sound design from old video games. Which ones are your favorites? Which one you think might be the most obscure ones? I'm interested mainly in FM and sample based styles from the mid 90s but anything goes really.

ost from that mother 4 fangame that i don't belive will ever happen at this point has some pretty wacky stuff in the ost, check it:

- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZryaJUVgwec - this one has some seriously sweet and unconventional harmony with just resonates extremely well with the rythm, witch also has a very cool change in the middle if i do say so myself!!!!!

- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSuSTojqPvw - i guess this is mother 4's take on the weird af final boss music, this time it reminds me of synthesizer works of hecker and stockhausen; xtremly sick stuff, i cant not get goosebumps every time at that final descending chord before looping

Neither a soundtrack nor experimental (it's just nice disco music).
And I am not amazed the the SID can do that. I am amazed that someone had the ambition to make a good soundchip. Everyone else was using beepers or the AY-3-8910 or some other basic shit. The fucking Atari ST, a 16 bit home computer, still uses the AY. The SMS uses the SN76489, which is barely better, if at all. It's octave range is garbage. The NES doesn't even have a soundchip and while the sound is far ahead of the SMS, it's still so basic.
Including the SID in the C64 was one of the best retro things to happen. Wish it had one, two more channels or at least they could not have fucked up its production.
But hey, at least it's faults somehow allowed the use of a fourth voice. One of the few times games actually went beyond the systems limits.

Unreal and Utopia are def one of my favs on Amiga music wise! Thanks for Populous! It's amazing how seemingly realistic and neutral soundscapes from 90s games bring out concrete music comparisons. You gave me an idea to look more deeply into SNES and Amiga strategy games. This one feels so surreal if you try to look away from the screen and just focus on the sounds. Especially funny since I often criticised european and american sound designs for old games as unimaginative. This one clearly isn't although in a 'wrong way' as it would be hard for me to focus on playing with all these sounds going on.

I wouldn't call it work per se, it's just DJing from time to time on a weekend. Most of the time I actually play different music, VGM now takes about 10th of my sets, about 5 tunes in an hour long mix so I usually mix it with experimental stuff, dancehall, ambient house, jersey club and such. VGM is not engineered for club systems but it's a nice spice. I think I might be one of very few people that mix club and VGM music together but In UK, USA and Berlin there's probably many more - I remember Moleskin playing Tenchu music

two experimental oddities from DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure, one of the best SFC soundtracks

Space Harrier 2 (Mega Drive) title theme is rather wonky

this BGM from Double Dragon II: The Revenge (arcade) reminds me of early electronic music, possibly the weirdest and most experimental use of the YM2164

another YM2164 piece, this time from Strider

so.. you want to steal other people's music and call it your own work? i call that fucking lame. write your own music if you want to gain any credibility. if you want to sample other people's work and call it 'remixing' 'experimental' or some other half assed shit, then prepare to be dissed.

tl;dr: make your own shit, lamer.

I'm not calling it mine or remixing it, it's just a DJ mix

Thanks a lot! Waterworld OST deserves all the love it gets.

This wouldn't sound out of place on a PC Music compilation or a Felicita record (https://soundcloud.com/felicita))

Asterix on the PS1 mixes elements of celtic, orchestral and jazz. Really fantastic score by 2DB.
