After seeing the Shadow of the Colossus remake side-by-side with the original, it got my noggin joggin'. Even by the mid to late 2000' the 5th generation consoles were considered retro. Any conversation of 6th generation hardware here is instantly met with "not retro" or with threats of banning and I just wonder what the legit reasoning is? Playstation 2 is 18 years old this year and the gamecube and xbox are both 17. If not this year, surely by 2019 this whole generation should be fair game for /vr/. Most people who would have played these systems are now in adulthood.

No.

Your childhood isn't retro and people in your age group that can relate are on /v/, we already have enough dumb crossboarders lately.

6th gen is, for sure, the last remotely classic feelin gen. However, its fanbase is too big and would destroy this board with its presence. However, you could ask for the /v2k/ board for 6th andmaybe 7th gen games.

This board is dedicated to discussing a specific era in gaming history, one that can be roughly characterized as pre-internet on a major scale, and with home console games still having significant arcade influence.

6th gen was the transitional generation between that era and the modern one, so it's hard to say what its exact place is. Since the arguments for including and excluding it are about equally strong in my view, I vote to exclude it, if for no other reason than the fact that 6th gen threads would overwhelm the board, given the popularity of 6th gen and the huge number of games released for it. You could never have things like the PC-98 thread staying up for days on end if 6th gen were allowed here. It would just make the board worse and turn it into something that's hard to distinguish from /v/.

>>4557537
Sensible anon, I'd only add that 5th gen is the true start for said transition but since it's still more classic feeling and the fanbase not that big it's more OK.

The fact DC is accepted here as fifth gen is only a testament of how retarded sega was.
While counted as a sixth gen, it was advertised as direct competitor of the fifth gen, while in reality its a bridge between fifth and sixth gen.
Way more advanced than fifth but a bit weaker than sixth, people who looked for a fifth gen console went for cheaper consoles with bigger libraries while people who looked for 6th gen went with ps2.

It was ambiguous generation console just like your sexual orientation you fucking faggot.

I think 6th gen is safe from the mainstream online appeal. Even if it wasn't, Dreamcast had lots of online capabilities and it's allowed here.

>> No.4557568

Also, as much as I enjoy the constant Doom threads and build engine threads as their retro appeal is that content is still released for them but how many times do we need a best controller thread or sega vs nintendo threads?

>> No.4557569

This is not the "nostalgia" board, it's the "gaming before the year 2000" board.

Go eat a tide pod or whatever it is your generation does for fun these days.

I totally agree 6th gen is absolutely retro.

>people who were little kids during 6th gen are in their mid 20s now
>I was in highschool when PS2 came out
Fuck. When did I get so old?

I consider 6th gen retro and have for about 3 year now. I don’t care what the fat bald geezers on this board say. They’re just scared because their childhood is actually past the point of retro and is classic now.

so maybe a name change is the simple remedy to this issue instead of these arbitrary timeline rules. Also what about the obscure consoles of the 2000's? those threads would be right at home on this board.

>> No.4557583

>>4557562
They probably did however I doubt they knew exactly what to expect from PS2.
That said its not much weaker, cant help but wonder what would have happened had sega supported it as long as PS2 was supported, shame 6th gen killed it instantly.

>> No.4557584

Whether it's by design philosophy / industry trends or by periods of time, the 6th gen should be here.

The only argument I can see against it is that the board would be flooded, which is true. On the other hand of that, though, I don't think that what this board currently is is worth preserving, so maybe the flood would be a good thing.

Or maybe allow them, but only in containment threads?

yeah you don't get to decide what's worth preserving, faggot
fuck off back to /v/ if you don't like it here

>> No.4557592

Remember how there was never any confusion over the rules back when it was "5th gen and older for consoles, Dec 31st, 1999 and older for PC's"? It's almost like adding an exemption to the rules just to shoehorn in the Dreamcast wasn't such a good idea after all. Gee, who could have seen this coming?

>> No.4557594

how many times must you retards be told to ask for /v2k/ instead of ruining this board

>only in containment threads?
There's already a containment board called /v/.

The last thing we need is large-scale console wars threads where you'll let everyone know your childhood was better than their childhood.
