Kefka wasn't a villain, he was the hero of FF6. The true villain was Emperor Gestahl, the mastermind behind invading the Esper World and trying to steal the power of the Goddesses. Kefka was just the whacky retard clown that kept quipping about how much he hates everything. When the Emperor was about to ascend to deityhood and spell the end for our heroes, Kefka herp a derped in instead and became the biggest failure of a villain in Final Fantasy history. He actually achieved deityhood, but was too insane to do anything with it beyond shooting random lasers around. He was too unfocused to kill the Returners, hell he was too unfocused to even do what he wanted, which was destroy the world. That's how the heroes were able to defeat him. Omnipotent power, but too retarded and crazy to use it, so he got put down like the mad dog he was. Meanwhile, had Gestahl succeeded and became a god, the first thing he would've done is destroyed all the heroes and proceeded with his conquest of all reality with none to stand in his way.

Sephiroth, Ultimecia, Kuja, whomever, they might've all failed in their plans by being thwarted by the heroes. But Kefka stands alone as the only villain so incompetent that he actually accidentally stopped the bigger evil and created a lesser threat for the heroes to have a chance.

I don't think he died on purpose, but he was able to still seize power even after death. He already made a pact with the underworld to attain power, he just carried that power with him beyond the grave and was able to conquer the afterlife, so instead of being tortured via selling soul to demons, he kicked their asses and enslaved them to control how he saw fit.
