This right here. Rare has always been known for making insanely good looking games. Even more recently, with stuff like Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts or Killer Instinct reboot, they are super talented guys.

It never really gets mentioned, but Majora's Mask was a pretty incredible looking game in a lot of ways. Not a huge fan of the game itself but the graphics are undeniably gorgeous. Really out of place compared to your average N64 game.

I mean, you can say that, but you're factually wrong. Rare has always had the best looking games on basically every platform it's developed for. Just look at Conker Live and Reloaded on Xbox, it had fucking real-time fur rendering. This shit literally looked better than most early 360 games.

This retarded meme again. I bet you're one of those motion sickness faggots. The game literally runs around 20~25fps unless you overload the match with simulants and explosives, and there are a handful of singleplayer levels which run below that. Yeah, multiple weapons, like when you use the N-bomb or rocket launcher and you're playing with 8 simulants. If you're playing with say 4 simulants on a medium sized map, it almost never drops below 20. Stop being retarded.
>And no I do not get motion sickness, unplayable framerate is exactly that: unplayable.
So in other words, you're shit at the game, because retarded reviewers in 2000 were able to play the game well enough to give it 97 metacritic rating and you're aren't. Nice defense.

So are you trying to say that Perfect Dark under NORMAL conditions runs at single digit framerates? Wow okay, so I suppose when you turn everything up to MAX the game should run literally at 1 FPS right?

Except that when you put on the MAX settings, that is 12 player mode (4 player splitscreen + 8 bots) and high resolution mode the game runs around ~8 FPS. Which means realistically he's right, the game under normal conditions will run at 20-25 FPS.

No, the game's framerate drops when lots of people are shooting guns. Four players with no simulants is easily capable of this with lots of weapons (especially that fucking sniper rifle where all the colors go neon). It's single digits during the times of the game where the framerate matters most, which means it's a single digit framerate experience.

You could actually do something like that with a Pi unit. Of course, you'd also have to interface the cartridge port, debug the whole speaking process between the two and find a way so they don't fry each other. Also, I'm not really sure about the power requirements. You couldn't also make overly complex games, since the action is still driven by the CPU and RAM.

The Genesis version does load and run faster, though. Shows more images when recapping the story between levels, too.

NES games do it, but it's limited. Ninja Gaiden and MM6 have it, but the layers never overlap because it's just one background layer being sheared. Like in >>4565217. Toy Story does it for the floor, though. Metal Storm and Battletoads fake it by animating certain background tiles to look like they're moving relative to the player.

The easy way to do Toy Story's backgrounds would be to to layer dozens of backgrounds/sprites on top of each other like in Sega's Super Scaler games, but the Genesis only has 2 layers to work with. The game is doing something more complex.

I've also never been able to figure out how it did the giant kids running around the Pizza Planet level. It's not just a giant sprite, or at least that's the impression I get from the solid color pants.

>> No.4567392

>>4567196
You're right, I do spot an extra layer on Inside the Claw Machine on SNES. But I've also seen extra paralax layers on other levels in Genesis that the SNES version doesn't have. Seems to be a bit of a wash at which version has more paralax layers.

I think this might be down to the differing ways that the two consoles accomplish the layers. SNES has more layers as such but it has significantly less flexibility in how the tiles in each of its layers can be scrolled. Genesis has fewer layers but significantly more control over how those layer tiles are scrolled - so it can give the impression of more layers with fewer layers.

I suspect each method has its advantages and disadvantages, and perhaps one way was more useful for one level and the other way was more useful for other levels.

You're probably right, I've never played the Genesis version all the way through.

NES was incapable of scrolling multiple levels over each other. It's just some really clever programming to make it look like there was two levels. End result is the same, ultimately.

I wouldn't say 2001/GBA is ''retro'' but VD-Dev (Valez and Dubail) have always innovated, they did PC-engine first and iirc they did Wacky Races for the GBA
In any case these 3 games seriously push the GBA hardware to its limits, if not for warping issues they'd be on par with PS1/N64

Delta Force: Urban Warfare was interesting. It had a ton of features you wouldn't see in FPS games until 2004 and onward. Large open levels, multiple fire-modes on every weapon, the ability to move bodies, and some legitimately cool crawling animations, and all under 250mb in size.

Definitely worth emulating. It was by far the most advanced FPS of the PS1.

Yeah, right, uhmmm... no. Nes couls never for the life of it do parallax. The way they did it wasn't that ingenious either. The mapper has a special provision, which allowed them to use tiles from different tables into one layer, namely the one the NES had to offer. They essentially stored the bit pattern a number of times in succession offline and then simply drew the tiles they needed to in order to give the illusion of parallax. One background really used the NES scroll features, while the 'other' layer was simply juxtaposed animated tiles.

Mode 7 can't actually manipulate sprites though. It only manipulates a tile layer, so it's a lot less flexible then with sprites. Though you could always use the old trick of having a layer pretend it's a sprite through animated tiles and scrolling.

Ah ok, I didn't see the background bit. Still, it's not quite as flexible as actually rotating/scaling a sprite, and obviously it sacrifices an entire background just to display a sprite.

You can't go any closer to the metal than using actual hardware bugs, like the one the rowland brothers used with this game to scroll the screen at an insane speed (VSP).

Somehow the custom chips of the C64 were very exploitable in all the strangest ways.

Using the VSP could even lead to crashes if your power supply is worn out or other parts of the electronics haven't aged well.

Too bad that all those dirty tricks aren't emulated that well. Especially the Emulators Nintendo used with the Wii Virtual Console were pure garbage:

Some really good lighting effects that seem mighty impressive on PS1's lowly hardware. It gets even better when you see that the PC version can run playably on a Pentium 90 mhz with a 3DFX Voodoo card. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93slM7QSfZc I don't think even Quake with MiniGL can stand up to that.
