What is /vr/'s opinion on flashcarts given their reputation of frying your console as well as the ethical concerns over illegally stealing games from the internet?

I play almost all of my retro games from flash carts. I'm in the process of selling off all of my old games since I don't need all these hunks of plastic anymore, and autists like OP will pay me premium prices for them.

I had about 200 carts when I started selling everything off, and had a lot more than that at one point in time.

I stocked up on NES, SNES and Genesis games in the early and mid 2000s when the prices were super low, and also held onto everything from my childhood. I specifically remember my local EB Games store selling boxes full of NES games for $0.25-$0.99 a piece when they stopped stocking them in store. I was a teenager with a part time job and no responsibilities, so I bought them all. Turned out to be a wise investment.

They're for idiots who can't emulate.

As for stealing, if a game is available for purchase new in some way then get it that way. If it isn't, then it's free to pirate. Paying for resold goods is never required.

Look up fair use

What's the alternative? Should I hope the copyright holder re-releases the game on a modern system? What about games with licensing problems like Diddy Kong Racing. I'd say repros are a much worse ethical problem. Knowingly buying counterfeit goods IS illegal. Roms are a necessary evil.

Played a mega drve (or genesis) at the heart of gaming in croydon which had a ever drive plugged in. Played 2 games, sunset riders and gunstar heroes. Never played sunset but it seemed to play well but gunstar was really laggy 2 player. I own pal gunstar at home and that plays fine with 2 players. As i said not sure if the megadrive was 60 or 50hz.

>> No.4540669

Gunstar Heroes has always had slowdown, and it's always been worse in multiplayer. I doubt being played from an everdrive could cause any additional slowdown.

I only buy specific retro games I really want to play nowadays, so I feel more inclined to get those very few games instead of a flash cart. If it's too expensive or needs an English translation, I'd rather just emulate than risk messing up my original console at all.

>their reputation of frying your console
I've yet to see legitimate proof of an actual fried console from use of an Everdrive-style flashcart. I'd hardly call that a reputation.

In fact the only claim I've seen of fried consoles is the anecdotal "I have already heard from several friends that their NES consoles have died most likely due to their admittedly heavy use of cheap multicarts" in the db electronics scare-mongering article, and in any case it's referring to those cheap Chinese '150 in one' type cartridges.

So yeah I'm not particularly worried. If the problem was widespread we'd be hearing about it.

>illegally stealing games from the internet
The only way to play the games properly on their original hardware is either buy used carts or use flashcarts (I do both). Either way, neither the console manufacturers or original developers/publishers are making any money from this so I'm not concerned. Using flashcarts also allows you to avoid the ridiculously overpriced second-hand market.

>frying your console

Doesn't happen unless you're using some shitty off brand chink shit, even then it's probably rare to the point of being statistically insignificant.

>ethical concerns over illegally stealing games from the internet

Ethics are subjective. Original studios/devs/companies aren't making money from used cartridge sales anyway. If you feel guilty and they do have some kind of modern distribution method, buy the game.

Luckily I didn't get too far into the plastic collecting meme before I got flash carts. I just kept my childhood games and some that I really liked and traded the rest to friends for consoles I didn't have.

Even if the meme of frying consoles was true (it's not) it would mostly be fixable by anyone with repair skill and most consoles are cheaper than rare/expensive games. Genesis for example: I can buy a genesis locally for $30 and it has the original box. I didn't because I already have 4 from random pickups for a few bucks over the years. They are a $20 console, even if you had to replace them once a year you would still come out ahead.

I’ve honestly considered just collecting cases and manuals instead of the games themselves since they’re the most artistic and nostalgic part of games except for the data itself, which - SURPRISE - is more conveniently on a flash cart and 99% of the time plays the same. They’re also likely more rare to boot.

I think that's great. Bandwagoners will believe that consoles are more rare because so many have been fried and will be willing to pay an even higher premium for their hipster cred. The value of all those consoles I'm hoarding will skyrocket.

But that's not even true.
The part taking the load here is the 3.3v cart.

The console uses 5v. It will not, and cannot be damaged by a 3.3v component.
The cart most likely won't take any damage either, since most quality 3.3v parts are 5v tolerant.

It makes far more sense to me to prioritize my investment into consoles, console-addons, high-end CRTs, cables, switchboxes, arcade parts, controllers, flashcarts, etc than original cartridges, because all of those things have a bigger impact on the gaming experience than 99% of original carts would (the 1% being games which don't work on flashcarts..yet?).

>Why not buy both?

Because my money is limited, so any money I spend on games is money that I can no longer spend on everything else I mentioned. Perhaps one day I'll get my gaming hardware perfect and then finally I'll buy all the original cartridges to complete the setup, but probably not.

I have nothing against cart collectors though, so long as they actually play their games.

Not him but I see nothing wrong with it. If a game is still available from the original developer or publisher in some way, then it's proper to buy it in that form.

Alternately if it's not available, I take the advice of Tim Schafer for his own products. Which is just pirate the game and then if you want to support the company buy a t-shirt or a newer game they made.

In the case where there's no way to buy the original and no way to support the developers then all bets are off.
