Has this glorious motherfucker had a thread on /vr/ yet?

If so, I haven't seen it.

EWJ thread. Even though saying "EWJ" takes longer than just saying his name.

>> No.453847

Played it for the first time on the Sega CD the other day. It's way too hard right out of the gate. I put it on easy mode, and I was able to get through the levels, but it still wasn't fun because I was getting hit constantly. Those fucking dogs just sit right on top of you, and there's no way to avoid them.

Shiny games' hit detection takes some time to get used to. It really helps if you grew up with the Genesis Aladdin game and are already familiar with how their mechanics work.

This. Plus their games tend to have a trial and error factor to them not usually present in action platformers, but much of the fun to them is figuring out how to proceed and then breezing trough them when you've memorized it all.
Pic related, just as with the original I can almost play trough it blindfolded.

There are platforms you have to jump on where they just camp. Once they're on top of you, you just continually take damage.

Also, there are parts where you have to shimmy across a rope hanging over a dog. Unless I'm retarded, there's no way to get past it without taking a hit. You can't shoot down when on the rope, and you can't shoot in the air.

>> No.453951

You hold up, wait for the dog to pass, keep on crossing, when the dog comes back you hold up, wait again, and so on.

>that feel when I grew up playing EWJ 3D for my N64

I never beat that first boss. But I will always blame that on it being a shitty game.

Actually, I don't remember anything specific about it that made it bad, just that everybody hated it. What was so bad with EWJ 3D?

You do know you can kill the dog right?
You do know if you hold up on a rope Jim will pull himself up right
You do know you can jump on a rope right?

If you can't do these basic things I don't think you will be able to beat the game even on easy mode.

When you land on the ropes instantly hold down and fire, they normally just gravitate to you. You will be able to easily kill them without taking damage when you are crossing on the chains.

On ledges just fake trying to go up the ledge like jump to it but move away to lure them to the ledge and just whip them.

I mean For Pete's Sake, it gets more maddening after the first two levels. Just wait until you hit Down the Tubes.

The problem I had with Earthworm Jim 2 is that a lot of the weapons really don't get many uses since there aren't many action platforming levels since the game constantly switching among styles, and even when you get to those sorts of levels they don't give out a lot of the weapons. I think it is just the first level, level ate, and possibly the last level that you get unique weapons, and it is really on the heavy side for the first stage. It just feels like it never needed to be in the game at all.

>> No.460796

Played EWJ2 first, multiple times and loved it, before eventually getting round to playing the first, and I found it really hard to get into. I really didn't enjoy it and haven't played it against since.

>> No.460891

>>458753
That's not really a problem though; the weapons are just there as entertaining fluff.

I have to say EWJ2 really is the better game; the variety and the pacing are just perfect. But unfortunately it made some sacrifices to the character animation to achieve what it did; the animation in the first one really looks like nothing else. The first game is also harder, which is a plus in some ways, and has more of an "iconic" status somehow. I guess I fluctuate back and forth in terms of which one I prefer.

One thing I do have to say though, definitely go with the Genesis for the first game and the SNES for the second game.

>> No.460936

I never liked how EWJ 2 seemed to consist mostly of minigames than actual platforming. Granted, EWJ 1 had its share of diverse level design and it does help to break the monotony, but 2 just does it way too much. It's as if every level is almost a completely different game, and none of them are really that polished. I mean, I still love it, but 1 is definitely the better game in my eyes.

Snes had better sound and graphics than Genesis, BUT Genesis had a sweet extra level where Jim ran inside someone else's intestines.

I think the Sega CD version had yet another extra level.

>> No.463437

>>463368
The Snes version also had a dark room level with those giant eyes waiting at the end.

I remember Shiny saying that since the Snes used 256 color graphics (compared with the 64 on the Genesis) they ran out of space and the Snes version had to sacrifice a level.

>> No.463492

>>463437
This is also why the SNES suffers from extremely muffled music and sound effects. Genesis music, barring PCM samples, doesn't take up any cartridge space. It's just files telling the synthesizer what to do and what notes to play. SNES doesn't have a synthesizer; it's dependant on WAV samples to make music.

Remember that the game was made for the Genesis and then ported over to the Super Nintendo as more or less an afterthought. They probably had to compress the samples to hell in order to get everything to fit on the cartridge (Even the PCM samples on the Genesis sound less compressed than they do on the Super Nintendo, in an ironic twist), and sacrificing the arguably most forgettable level was probably the best option.
