Memes aside, are there any genres that are worse and less deserving of popularity than these two? You could not name something as banal, monotonous, and with objectively worse gameplay if you even tried.

Fixed the thread for you.

Both bmups and shmups are very derivative and repetitive for anyone who isn't a "competitive" player going for 1cc or hi-score. For the average player who doesn't care about "routing", "patterns" and "scoring systems" these games are extremely similar and there's only one or two games in either genre worth playing before you realize how similar and monotonous they are.

Run'n'guns are much more diverse and varied, with way more design space than bmups and shmups. Ghouls & Ghosts, Gunstar Heroes and Contra are nothing alike, and less monotonous than virtually any bmup or shmup by the virtue of having more varied enemy and stage design

Most people that don't like beat-em-ups don't try to 1cc them.

Of course Final Fight seems boring when you don't try to learn enemy patterns and just credit feed your way to the end.

This.

The way I see it, a game is a good-natured competition between two parties. Sometimes something can be substituted for another human as the other party, like an AI or enemy formation. However, credit feeding removes the competition, thereby turning it into a "video exercise" rather than a game. You can tell yourself "oh I'm going to feed but I'll play honestly and really try" but inevitably will wind up brute forcing at least to some degree because if your goal is to get through the stage, then of course you will use the most efficient method for as little effort and will never improve or notice the finer details. Why should I master all of the available commands and use all of the items laid out in The Punisher when I can just do my basic combo, die, basic combo, die, etc. as many times as I want?

Untrue. Final Fight is still pretty frantic even when you limit enemy spawns.

There are points where the game doesn't hesitate to throw 10 enemies at you. And given how the AI works, you have to fight them intelligently, because there are a number of different attack patterns each enemy can perform on you. Success in Final Fight means thinking on your feet as well.

Complexity comes from both player input and the game's design. Arcade games have easy to understand inputs most of the time (they have to be pick up and play by design) and thus their complexity comes from their challenging game design.

>Fighting games are bad because player button mashes randomly
>FPS are bad because the average player barely moves and can't aim
>Platformers are bad because the average player emulating them savescums

>Adventure games are bad because the average player looks up guides and never has to solve a logical puzzle by himself.

Yep, this is why I have doubts when I suggest credit feeding while actually trying and then try to beat the game with less coins each time, if you don't feel the actual tension of losing the run it's harder to improve and play at your best.
