It's not a show that I think everyone would like, but I'll try and explain why I enjoy watching it:

Arino was half of a well know Japanese comedy duo. He's a pretty funny guy, if you're into his kind of humor. Watching him struggle through difficult segments is part of the appeal of the show. Even though he's pretty terrible, you can always see him improve by the end of the episode. His confidence and fighting spirit, despite being a terrible player, is quite charming.

Outside of him playing games, the show features segments of him visiting arcades across Japan, interviews with famous Japanese game developers, and sometimes coverage of events like the Tokyo Game Show. If you have any interest in Japanese arcade culture or the history of game development, there's a ton of really interesting segments.

He's been on TV for like 20+ seasons, so there's a huge variety of games he's played over the years. I am positive you could find an episode of him playing a game that you would find interesting. The show has introduced me to a handful of games that I never even heard about (Battle Golfer Yui most recently.)

I've been hearing about this show and seeing amusing screen caps posted here for years. I finally got around to watching it and it's boring as fuck. Literally a jap playing games and a narrator flatly describing everything he does. It's almost worst than eceleb shit because it treats the viewer like a retard who can't tell what's going on.

I feel like this show is for people who are interested in games but have like, negative amounts of cognitive skill and maybe no hands or something. That's the trick, isn't it. If we could have a free exchange of information then everyone could say what they're working on and avoid overlap. For all I know SA is working on the same ones. Hence the possibility that I've got masterfully timed + typeset scripts and they've got the finished translations.

Then you have to account for one translator from /vr/ going somewhat dark in communications (not shitposter). SA could have that episode ready to go, give it to me damnit. Drew little shapes and everything. But he'd said it was pretty much done. LC's been working on a big one for a while but SA might snag that too. shitposter can get a new script whenever he's ready to begin a new translation, nothing going on there yet. Arino isn't an e-celeb. He's a real celebrity. He's been a famous comedian in Japan for decades and this show, which is focused entirely on retro games, has been running on one of the largest television networks in Japan for over 15 years.

E-celebs are people who pay third parties like youtube for the privilege of making fools of themselves to the unwashed masses. E-celebs are internet age freakshows that humiliate and degrade themselves for any form of attention and validation, and grovel for the content creator's equivalent of welfare. Arino isn't begging youtube to stop demonetizing his videos or his viewers to donate to his patreon. He actually works and makes a living playing and talking about games. Starting to get it?

When the show started, retro gaming wasn't very popular, so most companies had very little qualms about licensing out their games to be played on a TV show like this. Nowadays it's a LOT more difficult to get the rights for bigger titles, so the show has to dig into the more obscure libraries of consoles that don't get their libraries rereleased much.

No, there's 1. A professional company with dozens of employees, that puts out generally shit-tier work for brainlets.

The rest simply take that script and touch it up a little. There aren't any actual sub groups left, they all died years ago when the pros moved in.

Even back when there was a fansub scene for anime, it was pretty routine to see a show dropped for a month because of some drama. It was very rare to see a show with more than 2 choices for subs, usually there was just one.

What you kids don't seem to understand is that nobody "owes" you a sub. You're entirely at the whims of random people doing shit for no pay, and if you don't like the current situation, then you personally could pretty easily fix it within 2 years. Oh, but that would require effort, right?

There's nothing stupider than complaining about X getting translated over Y. Somebody wanted to work on X, nobody wanted to work on Y. The world isn't fair, that's why there are a dozen groups competing to get the first translation of one piss out every week, and you'll never even hear about 90% of manga.

Translating a show like GCCX is a lot more involved than shitting out an anime sub. You need to translate all the on-screen text, and translate natural dialogue instead of simplified written dialogue. And each episode is 3 times the length of an animu, so no wonder nobody can be bothered. Learn the language or shut up and wait.

Any language that has an acute accent shouldn't be the de facto localization choice over straight Japanese. Listen to Kan and Arino pronounce the title if you seek further proof. Their little monkey fella bazaar mascot was clearly designed to appeal to Brazil or Portugal or Spain or some other market. It's like calling Gimmick! "Mr. Gimmick" to accommodate its localization to the Scandanavian market. Gimmick! is Gimmick! Bazaru de Gozaru no Gemu de Gozaru is itself. Rolls off the tongue.

Maybe, but it'll be worth it once you get to the point where you don't need to wait on translations for anything anymore.
I'm still learning and haven't gotten to this point myself just yet, but it keeps me motivated, at least.

Seconding PoP and TokiMemo. Those are some of the absolute best episodes by far. I'd also like to recommend either Kai no Bouken or Mighty Bomb Jack, plus the 24 hour specials of whichever one you watch. They're both pretty emotionally exhausting.

Incidentally, I started watching season 15 and I'm dying, this segment is absolutely perfect.

It bothers me when they go with the localized terms for the translations. For example, in the Mr. Gimmick! episode, they keep calling him Gimmick instead of Yumetaro.
