Idk, I played all the main ones on release from 1 to heroes, 3&k was my first choice since late '94.
Now it's Mania, I see nothing wrong in preferring what I consider an improvement.
1 is the most important, but the sequels are simply more fun.

Eh I dunno, Mania's status as a "throwback" kind of puts it in weird territory. It's simultaneously new and nostalgic so it's hard to judge if it's so beloved only on its own merits or because it's reminiscent of whatever Sonic game we're supposed to like best at the moment.
That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it, or liking it, of course. Just makes me wonder if there's a certain degree of generational "appeal" with games like Mania, Mega Man 9, even original stuff like Shovel Knight that emulates an older style that comes into play.

Knuckles was already pointed as a "meme" character before that thanks to the "& Knuckles" jokes like what >>4524149 said. You can thank SEGA for not coming up with a better name.

But to be fair, then entire franchise of Sonic nowadays has regained a meme image, not just Knuckles. Sonic has the "GOTTA GO FAST" and the Sonic Cycle jokes, Tails has that you-know-what-it-is intriguing comic, Rouge is only remembered because of BAT TITS and nothing else, Shadow has the "OW THE EDGE" meme, Vector has spouted that infamous line of computer, Big in general for whatever reason, Silver with "IT'S NO USE", Eggman's "GET A LOAD OF THIS" line, and probably many more that I'm forgetting.

And to add it all, we now have a literal shitposter in charge of Sonic's official twitter who he has further infused the extraordinary memes into the recent Sonic games, as incredible as it may sound, and thus, presenting Sonic as a mere meme icon instead of a mere game mascot icon nowadays. Want examples? Sonic Forces with its character creator that has made many to remember the "donut steel" meme, and Sonic Mania with the "& Knuckles" mode.

Generations nerfed Sonic's air control significantly and made him slower overall. Jumping feels sluggish and nowhere nearly as tight as Unleashed.

Level design, although being better than Colors, also took a hit in Generations. Generations had a much higher bias for 2D sections over 3D sections. What little 3D segments existed in Generations were mostly restraint to small corridors that served as set pieces or transitions to the next 2D section. The only stage in Generations that almost comes to close to Unleashed's 3D segments is Crisis City, and that stage is plauged with crap 2D sections.

Because as good as Sonic 3's music is, Sonic 1 and 2's music was done by Masato Nakamura by J-pop legendary band Dreams Come True. Nakamura invented the "sonic sound".
Also, MJ wasn't directly involved in the songwriting for Sonic 3, most of the job was done by people who worked with Michael, Michael himself didn't seem to have that much input in it.

10-15 years ago, Sonic CD was only playable on SEGA CD or PC. There was also the shitty PS2/Gamecube re-release that got snubbed in the US by making it GameCube only.

I'm of the opinion that Sonic CD is one of the longest cases of buyer's remorse ever recorded. To justify their purchase of the shitty SEGA CD, people spread the lie of Sonic CD being the best Sonic game ever and everyone else is missing out.

Story, if I had to guess the FMV was added late in the development of the game. Amy was there to be like Peach to Get kidnapped.

The player starts the game and meets Amy in Palmtree Panic act 1 to show a girl who likes Sonic. In chaos collision she get kidnapped, giving Sonic motivation to race Metal Sonic.

You could argue it is why you race Metal rather then fight him. Robotnik has a hostage and will kill her unless Sonic competes in a rigged race.
