With the exception of the modern gaming climate I think films translate into games more directly than TV series. Star Trek could make a bitchin MMO though.

It still could have if it wasn't bungled.

A story based RPG type game would work well with Star Trek. Star Wars lends itself more readily to action style games which is part of why there were more in the retro era. Also, licencing.

I started playing it after it went F2P in 2013. I did play it pretty consistently for a couple years before losing interest. Now that's common for me to drop and MMO and give myself a year or two to recharge my interest - I've done it with WoW and LotRO many times. I legitimately tried a couple times to try and play STO again but I have issues with my account where all my characters won't load despite my account info coming through valid. If I could get my account working right then I would definitely be diving back in.

Star Trek is more about the story and characters while Star Wars is all about action. Probably why ST 25th Anniversary works so well a point and click adventure game.

That being said I would love an FPS Star Trek game where you play as O'Brien and you get to murder a bunch of cardassians.

The thing is how would that affect the game? You'd be fighting nothing but Jem Hedar, Cardies and the occasional shapeshifter boss. Using Voyager and its copout reset button powers as the base actually provided a more flexible setting for the game features all sorts of enemies to keep things ineteresting. In a Dominion War game you wouldn't have the chance to fight Borg, Klingons or mirror universe Terran imperials from the 2260's. Sometimes there's more to consider than just 'they based it on the bad show!'.

I think Star Control 2, captures the spirit of this series very well. You go around talking/interacting with different species from all around either via diplomatic or by means of combat. It has a lot of freedom in how you set your course. You can land on many of the planets (whether you make it or not depends on your ability and technology) and check things out. I loved Star Control 2 so much, I accepted even cheaper imitations like Solar Winds and loved that too.

A friend of mine loves the Mass Effect series and based on the stories I heard, they seem to fit the bill too, but are not retro. To be fair, Bioware will make him spend money anytime.
