first, it's not shit
second, if I was forced to choose a MMORPG to play right now, I'd pick up either UO or Asheron's Call

Used to, but i don't really have a reason to play this.

UO is a cult game, but i think it had the potential to be more than a pvp/pvm game. It had the roots to be a real Ultima but online, however it became just for killing.

Anyway, a truly open game. Everybody playing UO was making fun of WoW when it was released. It had a lot of great ideas such as:
-Drop items on floor
-Stealing, taming.
-Housing, buying a ship.
-Map with no zoning.
-Emphasis on customization.

Did a brave move to choose 2D over 3D, which i guess was essential to achieve its ambitious plans. Next to many crpgs of the eigthies, it has the honor of being the videogame that implemented a lot of fantastic ideas that will die with the game.

Which is sad, the amazing emulator scene could not save UO, i suppose because of the outdated client. If it wasn't because of EA, imagine they released the source code of the client.

Speaking of old MMORPGs, a couple of days ago I booted up Underlight and surprisingly enough, it still works. Activeworlds too but I guess this is less of an rpg.

No, when the UO project was started 3d simply wasn't viable

I played on UO:Forever a couple years ago, was fun and the pvp was decent (except for runners, there's no mechanic to really stop ppl from running away, this incentivizes gank squads to to make world pvp viable)

I log in now and then but I have too much lag since moving. I would never, ever play on the official OSI servers though, fucken trammel/felluca and all the other changes ruined the game

Been meaning to get into this on the free servers, but haven't had the time yet. Is there a guide for download, installing, and getting into this?

It is, or at least, was, to many. UO gave birth to numerous roleplaying clans and guilds

Search for the more popular player run shards, they'll typically have the client / Razor info you'll need to play.

Last time I've played it was September 2016. But I'm still attending the annual meeting of players from my server. I know some of those people for over 15 years.
Ultima was the only MMORPG that I've played for more than a week. There was also 9Dragons, which I REALLY enjoyed, but got shut down after years of financial struggle and there were no pirate servers for it.

Supposed to be getting something called "Endless Journey" within a few months that lets you play for free with some restrictions. Might give it a try again when that comes out. Played for 4 or 5 years before AoS and then played free shards for a while, but haven't played much since then.

Saw that UOGamers was mostly dead now though which was a surprise.

UO's classless model was way better than WoW's model
It's a shame WoW set the scene. The days of Tamer Bards are gone

Well, Tamer/Bard/Mage because holy hell do you need recall

What kind of shitty server you were playing, fellow melanin-rich man? Bard Tamer was one of the most fun things to play, especially if you were pulling caravans in the middle of clan war.
Jesus Christ, my server has nowdays less people than the clan used to have.

Nani the fuck?
Are those like recall scrolls minus the failure chance for low magery? Though I remember using the invisibility spell too when entering areas with hostiles right at the entrance so I could pull everyone's bars, provoke them against eachother while dragons munched on them, and then peaced the survivor
Anywho, only thing I needed help taming was dragons. Fuckers would break out of peace when angered by a taming attempt
As an other aside, I remember when I didn't understand how the game worked so I typed out spells trying to cast them. Kal Ort Por (Recall)

As much to do as in any mmo?
As far as I know, there's no raids or things like that, but you can battle monsters, tame monsters, decorate your house, gather top-tier gear, run some vendors, make crafters, steal from other players.
What more do you want?

sure
first you need to macro to make money
then you create a new char and waste the money you previously made to macro a pvp char. then you realize macroing combat in pvm is too much of a hassle
so you create another account and create a new char. but to macro combat you need to attack each other so you get your first char and make money to buy a house. then you proceed to find that tiny plot on fuck knows where
soon you find out you'll need supplies besides reagents so you'll macro another char with craft stuff
you'll also realize you'll need magic gear like vanquishing weapons
so you macro another char to either fish or treasure hunt
after you're done with all that you sit at the most populated bank and chat until you feel like you don't belong because you don't look cool. so your new quest is to get the most ridiculous haircut, beard, footwear, dye tubes

Server I've played on had recall stones for... well, anyone, as long as someone with Magic made it. And it was like that since 2003. And you could get them blessed for gorillion of gp, so they've stayed in your inventory after death.
Guess that was something the admin added, rather than official content.

The irony of the classeless system comes when you realise it's easier to design and code, and yet people went with class system for MMOs, even if those take extra work and effort to be made and require constant rebalances.
