I'm fine with that. Right now I'm playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2, a 100+ hour RPG that fits on a cartridge the size of a postage stamp. It was a necessary progression.

I miss RPG environments being that good looking but they dont necessarily have to be in 2D. Fortunately current 3D RPGs are quickly approaching that level of detail from the pre-rendered era but have been less than great for many years now.

They don't need to be pre-rendered, they just need a fixed camera. Persona sort of uses one, but doesn't commit.

I remember reading that rendering backgrounds and then overlaying a 3D space for the characters to roam around in was difficult to pull off. Graphics are to a point now, though, where they could just use in-game engine backgrounds and keep the camera perfectly still. I would be all over something that brought back the feel of a PSX-era FF like that.
