What's the hardest NES game? (that's not glitched like Cheetahmen)
I'll put the obvious out of the way:
Castlevania 3
Japanese Ghosts 'n Goblins
Battletoads
Ninja Gaiden 2 & 3
Silver Surfer

You get one continue for the final two stages. Double Dragon III's difficulty is tough, but a bit overrated.

Challenging but not overly hard.

>Silver Surfer
Does not belong in this list. I played it for the Follin soundtrack and yes it kicked my butt until I learned how it worked... then two hours later I had beaten it. Once you get powerups and know how the game works it's only mildly difficult.

>Battletoads
This is a contender yes. But there's probably something harder.

>> No.4516903

>>4516795

TMNT is fairly difficult compared to other NES games; anybody who plays it can see this. But yeah it doesn't really belong in this thread. It's a little bit unfair at that one point near the end, but otherwise its challenge level is perfectly reasonable. And you can get through that one tough spot with a bit of stubbornness and luck, even without looking up a special despawning strategy or whatever.

As for Zeldas--yeah that's always weird to see. I guess the obscure secrets in Zelda 1 could be considered difficult; I had most of that stuff spoiled for me when I was a kid so I can't judge it. But Zelda 2 has never been hard. People on /vr/ periodically remind each other that the final palace is super tough, but it really isn't, even for a kid... it's harder than say Mega Man II, sure, but it's not really very hard.

This is probably the most intense bullet dodging on the NES and the game is nearly an hour long. Granted you do get more bombs and 1-ups from points than any other STG it's still probably the hardest game to 1cc on it's highest difficulty.

>> No.4517053

>>4517009
You really should have just typed that out. It's only 3 more characters than that acronym you used.

I havn't touched Recca's hard mode. Does that have suicide bullets? Because if not Gun Nac is definitely tougher due to how dynamic that makes the game.

Gun Nac you get a lot of lives, like you'll get at least +2 lives from points every stage and a huge stock of bombs: maybe like 50 over the course of the game? But unless you maintain the ship-upgrade power up, which is lost on a single hit you simply do not have enough fire power to deal with opposition and your huge stock of bombs and lives is there to allow you to cling to life hoping another one of those power ups will drop in time.

It probably has the most bullets on screen for an NES game and it's all very dynamic with suicide bullets on. You can also just get overwhelmed by the sheer number of bodies if you don't kill the enemies in time, they like to linger on the screen for awhile.

The game is also much longer than other shmups, nearly an hour.

>>4517053
We haven't played each other's game so we can't discuss much here.
It's quite lengthy though that's not as impressive, there are quite a few hard ones that last like that or longer from that era like ARC Gradius III or some Toaplan games.
