Didn't you make this same thread a couple months ago? I remember you getting laughed off the stage over that "arcade perfect ports" assertion.

The only game worth having this system for is Midnight Mutants, and that didn't come until the system was long dead.

Too little too late. Was designed for single screen arcade games which were on their way out, and the lack of better audio hurt it. Having multiple channels of 2600 sound is charming (at least to me) but doesn't quite cut it compared to even the colecovision.

Would have sold more if they released before the NES like it was supposed to have been but NES probably still would have rolled over it. Atari not being Nintendo's American distributor was probably their worst move overall though.

They fucking completely ignored the 7800 and then tried to develop like 4 systems at once in the early 90s.

Midnight mutants, ikari warriors, fatal run, tower toppler, commando and ballblazer were the best games on the console. It's kind of ironic but the best games for the 7800 didn't start coming out until the NES was really successful and Atari had some inspiration as far as what to rip off.

If I remember correctly it basically came down to overconfidence and cocaine.

They were on top of the world getting millions of dollars at a time so they pushed too far too fast. They also forced their programmers to pump out shit games extra fast, AKA E.T. Not to mention everyone there was on some sort of drug because it was a den of hippie scum.

Overconfidence and cocaine.

Of these Midnight Mutants is the only exclusive, andI would argue is the only one I as an NES owner would have been jealous of 7800 owners for as a kid.

>> No.4513420

>>4512469
Fatal run is almost an exclusive if it weren't for the PAL 2600 version but yeah, midnight mutants is pretty easily one of the best reasons to own a 7800. I also forgot to drop Ninja Golf in there, which isn't as good of a game but definitely an exclusive in the 7800's favor.

I think when you look at games that were on both consoles it's kind of funny how comparable the 7800 and NES actually are. Ikari Warriors is better on 7800 and arguably so is Commando just because of all the flicker on the NES port, arcade ports like Joust the Donkey Kong games and Dig Dug are good on both, Tower Toppled/Castelian has differences but is solid on both machines, NES karateka, kung-fu stomp the 7800 versions but other stuff like ballblazer and choplifter that weren't so great on NES were better on 7800. And it's a toss up for stuff like Xevious, Galaga or Rampage. A lot of people like to talk about how the 7800 couldn't keep up with the NES but I think what hurt it more than anything was just the limited library and lack of really ANY third party support.

>A lot of people like to talk about how the 7800 couldn't keep up with the NES but I think what hurt it more than anything was just the limited library and lack of really ANY third party support

The 7800 was mostly designed for single screen games with a lot of sprites. Thus it had better ports of Galaga and Robotron than the NES but when it came to side scrollers, it fell short.

Everyone hated Sam Tramiel and no one wanted to work with or for him.

Fuck him and his kids.

If only they could have gotten Intellivision and Coleco to port their catalogs to the 7800.

Or it Atari had ported more of its own 8 Bit computer catalog...

Or even it's ST games.

Or used European developers.

Or partnered up with Sega to make cross platform games.

>> No.4513474

>>4513431
At the end of the day what hurt Atari more than anything was not being the ones to release the NES. They decided to sit on the deal in hopes of giving the 7800 an edge and it backfired in the worst way. All because they got their jimmies rustled over Donkey Kong playing on the Coleco Adam.

Why not. They released games for the 2600?

>> No.4515272

>>4515258
They did back when Mattel was running things. INTV continues to sell the 2600 games they already had but weren't developing anything new for the hardware. They were only doing intellivision games, and the output for those was pretty minimal since they were operating with a pretty small crew. Almost all the INTV guys were former intellivision devs from Mattel who didn't want to stop making games for the intellivision, so they bought up the rights and the old stock when Mattel abandoned video games and then sold the remaining inventory and their new stuff through mail order. They were enthusiasts who just didn't want to see the intellivision die, they weren't interested in being third party devs for other peoples hardware.
