I bought a CRT from craigslist and the colors are very faded looking and the corners are not in focus, almost like the contrast isn't up all the way (the settings indicate otherwise). It's a late 2002 Sony Wega TV and the S-Video is extremely sharp! Uh, anyways, I ordered a degaussing coil to see if that does anything but I haven't received it yet. What do you guise think is up?

there's no way around it. Some sets have holes for focus and G2, some have them for geometry pots, but 99% require removal of back panel even for just flyback pots access.

I'm looking for a DVD player that is region free and either component or rgb scart. I recently got a PVM and am in awe at watching the dragon ball z "dragon box set" through my PS2. I was utterly blown away by the picture. You can literally see the animation cells on this thing.

I'm using a PS2 or PS3 for DVD or blu ray through component currently, but they are region locked on DVD. Does anyone know a region free DVD player that would work for this?

It's a PVM-20L2MD with an additional RGP/Component expansion port if this is needed info.

It's just a switcher for video, if you give it 31kHz in you'll get 31kHz video out. If you're looking for an extron device that does 31 to 15kHz including 240p support, look for some of the older Emotia models, all out of production and go for kinda crazy prices, but work well. http://retrorgb.com/emotia.html

When I used to play online games I would speed solve during the load times, but I never got bothered learning new algorithms so the best I got was about where you got. The 2x2 I can solve lickity split, but that's nothing too special. Rubik's is just a fun destressor for me now.

Well I got a picture. The dullness of the picture isn’t really captured here, but the colors are, it’s like everything has a weird tinge to it instead of displaying them properly. In person the tv looks very washed out; the whites aren’t white and the blacks aren’t black, both times it’s kind of greyish. It’s too subtle for my camera to pick up on though. You don't have to do frame doubling for 240p on a VGA monitor, there are scandoublers (RGB 15kHz to VGA 31kHz) that will just show it as 240p or 480p with every second scanline missing
You can even do normal 240p as it's a standard VGA resolution, but that could have aspect ratio problems if we are talking about consoles are the source

Frame doubling is only needed on more modern GPUs when doing emulation on a PC with a VGA CRT

By any chance, does anyone here have the installer for crt_emudriver beta 10 (GCN version)?

The most recent versions changed the way they handle interlaced resolutions and fucked up my setup. I was forced to reinstall the newer version because I switched from a non-GCN card to a GCN card and they don't keep download links for the previous versions.

Tried that, monitor's low end sync limit's 30kHz so anything lower (like 240p 60hz) isn't working regardless of resolution (which is arbitrary on a CRT anyway). The point of the question was console's spitting out a resolution with a sync half the limit, so I want to double it so it's in range. Not a fan of doubling the resolution and manually inserting blank lines, makes it look less authentic than it actually is.

Suppose I ran a 31khz PC signal through an Extron VSC 500 in order to drop it to 15khz. I know the 500 can 'fake' a 240p signal - if I pushed said signal through my Extron RGB 109xi and out to my PVM, would it be interpreted as true 240p? I've read elsewhere that setups like this work in this manner. Obviously there are easier ways to do what I'm suggesting, I'm just into Extron stuff and I'm wondering if it's feasible.

VSC 500 only does 576i/480i out, so the converting to 240p/288p just by removing the interlaced sync signal will cause flickering unless the video coming out of the PC is pixel doubled vertically and flicker filter on the VSC is turned off, which is only really practical for retro emulators. The VSC500 will also add a frame or two delay which it needs for the genlock output capability. It'd probably be easier/better to just get an oldish ATi/AMD video card and run 15kHz out directly using CRT Emudriver. Or if you must use 31kHz VGA, get an older model of the Extron Emotia series, does 240p and 480i out with minimal lag.

Sonic Mania is natively 16:9 but you can set it to 4:3 through editing the settings .ini and it works perfectly other than some menu text being cropped. For whatever reason though it's not an option provided in game at all

Just bought an eight incher a few days ago for $20. I own a 1344Q, and let me tell you the 13 inch range is definitely the sweet spot for desk setups. I would only advise getting anything under 13" for decoration and muh arcade aesthetic. Mines right next to my WEGA, mirroring its composite/Svideo.

Not a deal-breaker for me, but there aren't any visible scanlines as far as I can tell. One hell of a sharp picture though, composite has never looked better!

I’m looking at a Sharp CRT service manual, and to access the service menu it says to “connect test pattern signal to antenna terminal” and then do a button combination.

SCART normally uses composite sync. If the console you are outputting SCART on uses composite sync then you solder an RCA cable onto that pin and it will give you a composite video. You can do the same for audio. The pinouts for SCART are easy to look up, just make sure that you've got composite sync.

Welp. I've tried finding any kind of upper or lower pin on this model (PVM-20L2MD) and I can't find the setting in the service menu. Also not finding any P.AMP settings either. I've tried finding it's service manual online but no luck on the L2, the MDU seems to have different options in it's menu.

I did move pincushion out like one or two clicks along with one click on the para setting, got rid or almost got rid of the slight bowing in on the right lower corner. I could get rid of it completely, but then it messed up the left side, so I struck a balance.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with it but it is a bit off on the top, goes more straight than with the curve of the screen. If the top of the screen were a string, you could pull it slightly upward in the middle and it would be perfect. I'm not sure why, but the picture isn't showing the issue too well.

I overpaid for mine and realize it's meme-level type behavior, but I love the thing, the picture is amazing. Retro consoles and gaming is my hobby, so I may as well get the best quality I can. I have a PVM and realize BVM are supposedly better, but even I don't have the sickness to pay any more for one.

Most content you're displaying on a CRT is expecting something like 5% overscan, and as such -should- take this into consideration in keeping important stuff like HUDs and the like outside of that portion and with in a "safe area".

Depending on your taste, some prefer to have almost no overscan to see the full raster, even if it means an ever so slightly smaller image over all, but that also leaves you able to see every little bit of weirdness at the edge of the raster. Adjusting to have the red dot in the center of the squares just outside of view is a decent compromise.

This only applies to TVs and the like. PC monitors (not PVMs/BVMs/etc) are expected to have no overscan and have the full raster visible.

I usually try to get it perfect with no overscan on my PVM, this lets me see the geometry on the edges better. After I get the adjusting out of the way, I'll make it a bit bigger in horizontal and vertical directions so it does have a bit of overscan. The pic you posted isn't bad at all as far as overscan goes. It's a bit more than I have, but if it wasn't an easily adjustable setting on a menu, I'd be happy with how yours is right now. That amount of overscan is pretty normal.

You can usually find snes to s-video cables on ebay fairly cheap. Even the cheap ones aren't bad. That said, there is a dude in poland that makes shielded ones that are a slight improvement. Nothing groundbreaking, but it can help with slight audio buzz if you have it.

The audio buzz is usually pretty minor and only happens for me on almost pure white screens with no other audio. Once the game's music plays you'll probably not even notice it.

I have a 13" and an 8". After using the 13" for a while, its incredibly apparent how unappealing playing on an 8" monitor is.

Can you do it? Yes. Do I recommend it? No. 13" Should be your bare minimum for desktop gaming, anything smaller should be used for muh aesthetic only. I can only imagine how annoying such a microscopic screen could be to play through a game on. Maybe use one as a spare/portable video tester. The only reason I have mine is because I got it for $20 shipped. Right now it's mirroring my WEGA's display. Also if it is a make or break for you, there are no scanlines on anything below 13". Crisp as hell picture though, even with composite.

Actually, one of the features of the newer cards is faster resolution switching - and not just slightly faster either. I can't speak as to what will happen with resolution changes mid game though, but i do use a frontend that switches to and from games using all sorts of resolutions, and have no issues that can't be solved within the frontend.

The retrocables.es version uses the wiring in pic related. Replace the Molex socket with a USB to give it the 5v the CRT needs to switch into RGB mode (it doesn't switch into the RGB channel automatically though, cuz it doesn't have voltage going into that).

As far as I know, low brightness and high contrast should yield good results on a regular consumer Sony Trinitron.
But what are the sweetspots? And picture sharpness and color, what do they really do? I've been playing around with my PS1 using RGB (Scart) but it feels like my picture is "washed out" or something.

I dunno, maybe I expect too much out of the TV, but I feel like some of the pictures you guys post are really crisp and clean, while still using a consumer set.

Anyone got any ideas/tips?

Got it for free at my last job. It was a throwaway from a largely defunct college TV station. It's a very low end PVM though, composite and S-video only, they were hanging on to all the good ones. I also bought a 5" PVM from a friendly anon from this general because I think they're cute.

Been playing all sorts of games and watching the dragon box version of dragon ball on it too. 20" is a little more money than 14" but I feel it's worth the cost to upgrade.

Learn to solder so you can mod your own consoles. Snes 101 (jr, mini) are dead easy to mod with a voultar chip. Genesis outputs rgb natively, so does model 1 master system.

Just take your time and learn what bnc connectors you'll need. Normally everything takes c-sync for sync.

Extremely lucky circumstances, paid a very fair price. I frequent eBay for local deals and someone was using it for video editing. They had a bid going for I think $50 at the time. The reason no one was bidding was because it was pick-up only in Manhattan, NYC. I go to school in Manhattan, so it would be super easy to pick up on my way home. Sure enough in the final bid moments, it shot up to around $90, and I set my max at $140 on impulse. Got it for $102.50. Monitor was in great shape.

I get notifs for following the eBay search "Sony PVM" and I got bored in class one day and searched it. Stumbled upon the monitor with a bid of like $4 with $15 shipping from Washington DC (3 hr drive away) with only 4 minutes left. Figured shipping couldn't be too harmful for a tiny little guy and sure enough it was packaged well. Scored it for like $20 total. It has some annoying burn in on the top and bottom (Thanks CBS). There are many cheap no-name DVD players in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, and Southeast Asia.
Just look for one with component outputs and optical digital audio out, and you'll be fine.
And maybe DTS but that's a bit rarer to find.
And as far as I know, no DVD players output DTS via analog audio, only digital.

They are not as durable as most better-brand DVD players but they are still serviceable and are the ideal option since they are very cheap and region-free.

Just look for one with component outputs, a digital audio out, and maybe DTS Digital Out and karaoke features if you're into that thing.

Is there any way to tell that an HD CRT upscales everything to 1080i? I went through the Samsung WS-32Z419P 's service manual, but I cannot figure it out. It takes 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i through Composite, and in the service menu there are options for setting different yoke deflections for 480i, 480p and 720p.

If a TV is HD it will upscale, it's not a question. HD sets are entirely different from SD sets and are essentially identical to modern LCD displays as far as handling lower resolutions.

Also I believe you mean Component, composite only goes up to 480i.

I was messing around in the menus of my WEGA 24-KVFS120 and was wondering about the different video modes. Should I stick in standard or is "Pro" mode better? It looks slightly sharper, just far dimmer than Standard.

Not great for retro as it's an HD set that'll rescale all inputs to 1080i/540p, adding lag and not producing the "scanline" effect you get with consoles on an SD TV.

I used eBay over two years ago, and got a PVM-14M4A for $20. That was where it started. Since then i've followed every lead described in the CRT-hunting pasta (i wrote it) and then some. I've had leads out for years, and sometimes they mature. A few big scores coming up soon, mb.

I sort my self out first, but always seem to end up with surplus, which i make sure to pass along cheaply. Not like that gouging f#$kwit RGBRob - his videos are ok, but he charges top dollar for the privilege of dealing with him, when no doubt he scores stuff for next to nothing.

The wobble is caused by the bright lines dragging down the high voltage, which also runs the deflection circuit, so affects the size of the next few lines a bit. A bit of wobble is normal, if the capacitors on the B+ rail/regulation have aged replacing them can reduce it.
