I wonder if anybody prefers the original Super Mario Bros over Mario 3

I think SMB1 controls better, but the difference in content is too enormous for me to prefer it to SMB3.

I definitely prefer the tighter, more arcade-style gameplay of the original over the third game.

I prefer SMB1 controls. SMB3 is fun in it's own rite, and it looks better, but I still like the original.

I could never go back to playing a 2D Mario after spending time with the likes of SM64 and Galaxy.

Why collect coins in Mario games?

Perhaps for sentimental reasons. It was the only game I owned for a few years.
I love the physics of Mario 1. It's fun to pick-up and play randomly.

Mario 1 is very tight on lives. You really need to collect every coin you can if you want to finish the game.

Unless you've mastered the game, in which case you're the 1%.

You can run through SMB in ~25mins (no warps) because of the amazing controls. It is so satifying to pretty much never stop running, only to dance of course.

My first Super Mario game was actually 3. I jumped from Coleco Vision to a Famiclone with a multicart full of pre-1985 black screen games like Donkey Kong and Circus Charlie. Then I jumped straight to SMB3. It was quite a leap, I was overwhelmed as a toddler.
I played the first SMB game like a year later. I was a bit put off with the graphics, color palette was less colorful, and I guess as a kid I felt the atmosphere in the game was dreary. in contrast to SMB3's art style and colors, SMB1 looked like some gritty dark game. Although I guess world 8 in SMB3 is darker than SMB1 ever was, there were other things about the graphics that unsettled me, case in point Mario's sprite. I was sued to Mario being a chubby funny guy, and SMB1 Mario doesn't really look like Mario, to me, it looked more like some taller, shadier guy was trying to pass up as Mario, which in hindsight I find hilarious but when I was a kid, yeah, I didn't like his sprite.
However, I kept playing it, because the game is addictive. It has good controls and design, although I had to adapt to it (not being able to backtrack is a big one).
I think it's a good game, but I'll always prefer SMB3 with my powerful unremovable nostalgia glasses. But I would understand somebody else preferring the first one.

Crazy to remember how big a difference stuff like that made. When my older brother and I realized you could backtrack in 3, he said something like, "ooh, it's a go-back game." So platformers where you could backtrack we henceforth called "go-back games".

Yup, and not only that, it actually opens up the door for the devs to make new puzzles and levels that take advantage of the feature.

Very welcome addition imo.

I didn't like it at first because its mechanics are very different from the others. Controlling mario feels like driving an 18 wheeler. He takes some time to get speed, he needs more time to stop and you can't simply jump without thinking at a high speed and adjust it in the air to the point of returning to your starting place or go very high while bouncing on enemies unless you hit them while you're ascending. I liked how even the simplest jumps, fire coming from lava pits or a group of 3 koopas felt scary at first. I also enjoy the simplicity, it doesn't need to rely on gimmicks to be a good game, all you have is mushrooms, flowers and coins.

Plus he looks like a fucking boss.

Anon conveniently forgets level 3-1 "infinite lives" trick. Truly babby's first platformer.

I wonder if it was memory limitations in the early games or something. I'm not the type who knows a lot about the technical stuff.

>> No.4507290

>>4505425
The reason you can't go back in a level in SMB1 is because of the more primitive mapper, but I can't think of anything technical that would prevent replaying levels.
