Can anybody tell me what's so appealing about the Genesis as a console? I had like 50 games or so for it, but I remember almost every one being bad, either as an average at best arcade port or licensed shovelware.

Here's the games I liked on Sega Genesis

>Mortal Kombat 2 and 3
>Sonic 1 and 2
>Arcade collection
>Terminator 2
>A couple of misc games I forgot the name of

Why was every game on it mid-tier or lower arcade ports, licensed games, or sports? Why were there no RPGs on it like Final Fantasy?

The games are great, you just need to dig deeper. Splatterhouse 2, 3, Robocop Vs Terminator, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie, Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles, Spinball, Streets Of Rage 1, 2, 3, Revenge Of Shinobi, Vectorman 1 & 2, etc, etc.

As for RPG's, there was Phantasy Star 2, 3 & 4. RPG's aren't my cup of tea, but I heard great things about the Phantasy Star series. Also I love the fact that the Sega Genesis model 1 looks sleek and sexy, unlike the American SNES(they should have with the PAL version).

Phantasy Star II, III and IV are worth your time. (Well, III not so much maybe, but II and IV are great.) They're great RPGs that I actually prefer to the /vr/ Final Fantasy games.

Other notable RPG's include Beyond Oasis, Landstalker, Shining in the Darkness, Sword of Vermillion, Ys III, Shining Force I/II, Wonder Boy in Monster World, and Shadowrun. These are all good games.

Plus you've got all the Sega arcade classics like Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, etc.

Maybe you should try being a little more open minded, and try games that weren't commercially successful at the time of their release, or try games that you have never heard of or played before. The Genesis library is overflowing with great games.

The SNES has just as much licensed bullshit, sports games, and shovelware as the Genesis did.

Can anybody tell me how so many people manage to reach adulthood without being able to grasp the concept that not everyone agrees with them and that their own tastes are highly subjective and also probably bad?

I mean fuck, how does someone who thinks Mortal Kombat is good even reach adulthood without accidentally drinking drain cleaner or something?

The exclusive shmup library (made for console) is probably the best of its time, though PC Engine is comparable / close.

Thunder Force III and IV (Lightening Force)
Battle Mania Daiginjou
MUSHA
Gaiares
Elemental Master
And more. There's also run and guns like Contra Hard Corps, the Treasure Games and Batman & Robin.

SNES vs Genesis is the console war that should have ended all console wars because it was so truly well fought and so even for so long. It's the only console war where the consoles are equally great by most objective standards. If a gamer can't learn that gaming is subjective from Genesis vs SNES he'll never learn.

Phantasy Star is one of the worst RPGs. Especially the earlier ones. Bad plot, clunky UI, early ones let you fight or run you don't even get to choose who you attack. Getting around the world is slow as fuck. It's not good. It's usually mentioned simply because it's the only proper JRPG styled game on the system outside Beggar Prince and Legend of Wukong by the same company in the mid to late 2000s.

Man I wish Sega were better hardware designers.
The Mega Drive wasn't futureproofed at all. The processors weren't properly linked to each other; lots of pins weren't connected to anything at all.
And the dumb musical chairs they played with motherboard designs led to wild differences in audio and video output quality.

Anon is talking about the quality slump in the middle of the system's lifespan i.e late Model 1s and early Model 2s. Model 3 doesn't count as it was released well into the 5th gen as a poorfag console.

>> No.4503872

>>4503808
And it's not just the parts bin roulette shit they pulled with their revisions, but the base design was flawed as well.
If you look at a motherboard, you'll notice that the processors have a lot of blind-soldered pins that aren't linked to anything.
I've read that, had the processors' and memory chips' spare pins been linked in a specific number of ways, the console would've been more capable. Also its add-ons (Sega CD) would've performed better.

The Genesis's main appeal came from a false significance assigned to certain irrelevant aspects of it by advertising. The idea that it would make gaming cool and edgy with Sonic the Hedgehog, blast processing, and uncensored Mortal Kombat was what Sega relied on to compete with the SNES, whose games overall were and are much better on average. That said, its still a decent console with fine games and everything.
