Not my favorite but check out Herzog Zwei (made by the same guys as TF III), it's a hell of an original game even to this day. A shmup RTS hybrid before RTS were really a thing.

One game that was a favorite that doesn't get a lot of attention is Ghostbusters. It was another game that got the GB license put onto it but it's still pretty Ghostbustery and a fun game when I only had like four games for it.

The Immortal is available on a lot of platforms but the Genesis is probably the best one and I loved that game. It was the first game ever where I conquered my fear/dread and beat. Very satisfying

Monster World is a really good action RPG that I didn't get until far later but I gotta put right up there. Cadash is good too but the arcade version is somewhat better than either the Gen or TG16 versions. I also liked Mystic Defender a lot back in the day and would run through it all the time but it's not the greatest.

Another I liked that's not really very good but I appreciated its aesthetic back then is Final Zone. It's also hard as fuck and I've never beaten it but I'm not very good at shmups, though it's more free roaming than most. Like Thunder Force III, which is another game on Genesis I played a lot despite not being very good at it.

Yeah, Ghostbusters was the last 2600 game that I played seriously before I got my NES and the SMS game is the same just with much better graphics. For a second I thought you were talking about Spellcaster which is a sort of first part to Mystic Defender, both based on the Peacock King manga which I wish I'd never discovered and read because it's boring as shit compared to the way my imagination filled in the obviously enormous missing pieces of story from those two games.

Langrisser 1 and 2. 2 has one of the best soundtracks on the console.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles.-

It's still one of my favorite games.

When I was a kid, I was terrible at video game, but loved Sonic 1 and 2. I never could get far enough to beat either of them until I was much older, but I still loved them.

Sonic 3 and later Sonic 3 & Knuckles was the ultimate sonic game simply because I could save the game. It's also why I'm so forgiving of modern games hand-holding new players when their audience might be younger kids because I think we all forget how terrible we used to be at games.

I thin Minecraft Storymode is a good example of a great game for kids because they know their audience.

There never was enough retro games in my opinion that took into account that kids might have trouble playing them. I think every system could have used more games like the Kirby series that were easy, but fun.

It's all about dat Quackshot.
