I’m thinking of taking the plunge and purchasing a framemeister, any advice, tips or general anecdotes to do with it?

OSSC is better, assuming your display can support better than Line2x mode. If you must have the Framemeister, be sure to grab FirebrandX's profiles.

My brother purchased a 60" sony bravia 4k Tv for xmas and I was at his place checking it out and I think I'm getting bitten by the HD bug. Right now all I have is a 27" CRT.
If my apartment had an extra room I could move the CRT to the spare and hook up the HD, but I only have room for one tv.. damn

The OSSC is really fiddly.
If you want something that just works the Framemeister is miles better.
You can't even flatout say a display supports x5 or not.
My RGB modded AV Fami will display fine in 5x but my PS1 will give me a black screen no matter how I adjust the sync settings.

Also, one more thing I noticed. The OSSC is extremely prone to jailbars.
The AV Fami I'm talking about has an RGB PPU inside. Without proper shielding you'll get a lot of jailbars from these.
I've done a couple of measures to reduce jailbars and you can't see them on a CRT or the Framemeister whatsoever.
In fact, here's a recording through the Framemeister.

When fed into the OSSC the jailbars are so pronounced it looks like vertical scanlines.

>OSSC is better,

lol no it isn't. It has shaky TV compatibility, godawful deinterlacing, and if a game uses anything but 256/320px resolution, it'll look like a turd.

Be aware that it will make some N64 and PS1/2 games really bad or downright unplayable since some of those games changes resolution constantly (like between a cutscene and real gameplay, or simply between menus) and the Framemeister can't keep up. This is a common problem with pretty much any upscaler and Framemeister is no different.

too bad both are shit at 480i. Framemeister has combing artifacts and ossc has bob deinterlacing.

it doesnt have to be a scaler to be compared to xrgb mini.

>> No.4503605

the only thing I have issues with my ossc with is ps2 stuff. Every thing else is fantastic imo. ossc and xrgb mini both have pros and cons. I'd take an ossc over a mini personally. Ive used x4 mode on snes, genesis, n64, ps1, Neo Geo MVS on a VG248 and Ive caputred all those consoles x5 on a datapath datapath RGB e1s.

>>4498295
the deinterlacing is pretty bad but the only thing I play thats 480i is ps2. I think if you know your display works with an ossc and you mostly play 240p games then ossc is the way to go.

They're a good starting point, but don't feel like you need to take them as gospel. You're better off learning what each option actually does so you can fine-tune them to your preferences. The way I have mine set up, I only need two profiles to cover every console I have flawlessly.

>>4503558
>Framemeister has combing artifacts
No it doesn't, provided you choose the correct image mode. There are a few options for different types of deinterlacing, but for example "natural" looks amazing.

>>4503584
yeah, it does.

I advise you wait until the next generation is released.

Blackout time when a game switches resolution is abysmal on the current model. Makes games with gameplay in 240p but pop-up menus in 480i all but unplayable.

I thought they stopped making framemeisters as a whole

>> No.4503936

>>4503930
Afaik they're still manufacturing them but a critical chip has now been discontinued so this will force a redesign for when Micomsoft's stock runs out.

Either that or they really will just knock the whole line on the head and fade back into obscurity.

Production is expected to end sometime this year for the current model. There may be a new model eventually, or there may not. They haven't announced anything yet.

>I think if you know your display works with an ossc and you mostly play 240p games then ossc is the way to go.

The OSSC is only good if you can't afford a Framemeister or if you only play consoles that never switch resolutions (so basically, NES and SNES and Master System). Genesis is okay for the most part except for a bunch of titles that switch to 256px mode. Luckily there aren't too many of those, Sonic 2 is maybe the worst offender, switching between all 3 resolutions.

PSX/N64/Saturn look like a turd since games vary their horizontal resolution a lot, can do more than 256/320px (which the OSSC won't scale 1:1 so you get ugly aliasing), very resolutions mid game (which your TV might handle slower via digital inputs than via analog), and they also often use 480i modes which looks so bad on the OSSC that they'll turn your eyes into scrambled eggs.
