It's rather sad to play the classic games from companies that were once big-time like Sega, SNK or Squaresoft.

Their massive varied library of quality games is really astounding to someone who was never born during the previous eras.

>> No.4497518

And you forget Konami. Now, that's really a tragedy.

Capcom its not bad but far from their golden years.

This.

It isn't like you can "miss out" on something you can still play and enjoy. Outrun and Afterburner were OLD games when I was a kid, but they still stood out at an arcade.

Yep, pretty much Monster Hunter sequels and ruining Street Fighter :P
But their past decade was awesome: Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Ultimate Ghost'n Goblins, Devil may Cry, Shadows of Rome, Resident Evil 4, Onimusha, Phoenix Wright, etc. Maybe the'll get better next decade

Squaresoft used to make amazing games like Bushido Blade, Einhander, Brave Fencer Musashi, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, Tobal and whatever I missed.

Also, Final Fantasy was massively hyped back then.

His sincere belief is that he is the mark by which all quality should be measured. So a game that has a million enthusiastic fans is actually terrible and probably "cancer" if it's not one that he personally likes. I'm not even kidding.

These companies aren't even dead (well, Squaresoft is now Squeenix, but the one that got the short end of the stick with the merge was Enix, not Square).
But yeah I can imagine how you feel. I can't relate too much because I started with a bit of 2nd gen (Coleco Vision) then jumped to NES, but I still experienced most of the medium, and only really missed 70s stuff.
But I can relate it to music, there's a lot of good music from not only decades, but also centuries before I was born and yeah it's overwhelming, but good that they exist nontheless.
Feel happy that you're able to play those games, even if it's emulated.

Eh, that’s still iffy at best. Between the two parts of Sonic Team, one can make an OK game every now (like Generations) while the other consistently makes dog shit (like the recent Forces). Mania was great, but there’s no telling how much steam a single guy can have in him.

Okay, but what about something new? Everything you mentioned are sequels to at least decade old IP’s, and most people agree those series’ (with the exception of Yakuza) stopped being worthwhile a long time ago. This is a major problem with gaming today, publishers depending on a well-known name for guaranteed sales instead of stepping outside the box to try something new. Everything used to feel new all the time, but since the Xbox 360/PS3 era creativity has stagnated and is now the exception rather than the norm. The industry has gotten too big for its own good and at this point I’m feeling ready to abandon my Bloodborne machine altogether and go back to just playing old shit.

>> No.4499441

>>4499424
Because creativity back then was just doing shit nobody else yet got around to doing. And why small/cheap titles thrived.
Nowadays everything has to be wholesome. Everything has to be open world, sandbox, everything has to have both driving and shooting, rpg-like dialogues, cover systems, stealth mode, romance options etc. When you have two years to develop a game and you have this fuckhuge checklist of boxes to tick you rarely have time left to actually try something new.

>> No.4501080

Yeah. Video games got huge and now they follow this DNA mutation kind of evolution just like hollywood where you have to convince "producers" to pay for your shit by pitching ideas in the "successful game plus a twist" format like "GTA but with assassins and parkour"

Akitoshi Kawazu is still there and still puts out excellent games when ever he is allowed to make something and if it ever does manage to make its way westward. This man is the truest of TRUEST mother fuckers.
>JP: I feel like the character classes that you pick at the beginning of the game have a huge impact on the way that you play the rest of the game. Can you speak to those a bit?
>AK: The fun in an RPG begins when you create a character, in my mind. I didn't feel the need to have a suggested party at the beginning for clearing the game. I wanted people to be all Black Mages or all Warriors if they wanted. But back then... In those days, people didn't think that deeply about that kind of thing, either. It wasn't just us. Everyone was sort of like that. The idea was to just let people figure things out. If you make a party of all White Mages, you probably can't clear the game, but we weren't really worried about that affecting the balance or anything like that.
>AK:...the unifying theme is that... Allowing the players to play the game the way they would like to play it. Giving them freedom to take the game in the direction they want to take it, without interfering too much on the design side.

What I loved about old Konami is that the same company could make "darker" or serious (to put it in some way) games like Castlevania, Gradius, Silent Hill, Metal Gear, but had that other side which made fun of themselves: Parodius, Twin Bee, Violent Storm, Kid Dracula, Goemon, etc.
Not a single company in the old days had that strong contrast in their lineup, even if back then there was much mmore sense of fun and humor in gaming in general.
