It's nostalgia, probably a lot of this board's first console or even exposure to video games. Having been exposed to good games as you admit back then is a huge impact, and when you know a game inside out it's harder to judge it nowadays as if you were playing them for the first time.

I have one (though I got it in 2008) and my favorite game is F-Zero X even with the rubber banding.

Obviously outside of graphics a lot of the highly regarded N64 games still stand the test if time in gameplay and design, honestly it's no wonder 3d was new, the consoles market share was low and it was hard to develop for so if you didn't put out gold you weren't going to make any cash

The N64 runs like dogshit, take Goldeneye for example. The draw distance is awful. It looks more like Silent Hill than Goldeneye. You can get killed by guys you can barely see and the aiming is ass. Don't even get me started on the frame rate, Jesus Christ. Point is, you can still enjoy NES, SNES, Genesis, etc. but N64 is clunky and plays like shit and it weakens the experience.

Those four words defeat any argument about the N64 you could have.

Of course, you have to put your 90's culture glasses on for some of the "edge," but it's a fun game.

Wii/DS. They basically became a completely different company (for the worst) after Iwata took over.

SM64, Ocarina, Majora's, F-Zero X, Smash, Mario Tennis, Mario Kart, Mario Partys, Conker's, Pokemon Stadium 2, Paper Mario, Goemon, Mischief Makers, Bangai-O, Sin & Punishment, Star Wars Racer, Rogue Squadron, Starfox, Ogre Battle.

There's TON of games you can pick up and play right away. Its 4-player multiplayer is unrivaled to this day.

If the N64 had some weeb jrpgs or at least a FF and DQ to beef up its library it'd be regarded as a godsend.
