Argie here, we also got the Club Nintendo magazine here. From what I've gathered, the south american CN was a cut version of the Mexican original though.
But it was still a fine magazine.
Argentina also had Nivel X which from 1997 until 2006 was one of the most famous vidya TV shows and aired in other countries of latin america as well. Nivel X had official sponsorship from Nintendo.
Yeah, Mexico always received better special treatment due to being close to USA, but I know Argentina, Chile, Peru and other countries had official Nintendo presence in the 90s too.

Well Mexico is part of North America which NOA is in charge of not to mention there's also the benefit of NAFTA helped get consoles and games out and since Mexico was the first latam country that Nintendo dwelled into it also got special treatment and because of that had a bigger fanbase.

Even still, Nintendo lost a lot of fans because of how expensive it was and for a while abandoned the region and left it to rot like the rest of south america but they're mostly back in full swing.

In general Mexican Spanish was always used for most dubbing of tv shows and cartoons in all of latin america, it's only recent that dubs come from other countries that isn't Mexico. Hell even shows and comics and media from Mexico are more well known across all of latam and around the world.

In the late 90s Mexico got a translated version of N64 magazine from the UK I think. but since it was translated the issues were nearly a year old so I was reading about how cool Banjo Kazooie was when I had already finished the game, when I bought the magazine I thought it would be about a new Banjo game.

Mexico almost got a translated version of Nintendo Power since apparently NOA constantly told them they should do that instead but they never did, in that case all of latam would've had Nintendo Power.

I also remember Gamepro got a spanish translation in Mexico for a few months, it even had a commercial but it didn't last very long.
>>4484436
Those comics were awesome, they stopped randomly but I'm guessing it was a rights issue, I somehow doubt Club Nintendo was paying or asking for permission to use all those video game IPs for their characters.

Before that they began publishing the SFII manga and for whatever reason they stopped in the middle of the story and people were very mad since this was during SFII craze, I'm guessing it was also a rights issue where they started publishing they might not have had the full rights too.

In the mid 90s Mexico would hold Nintendo events which were really cool I remember one for the launch of Killer Instinct/N64 among others. Tickets were cheap and it was all around hype.

Also the Mexican editors of Club Nintendo were tasked with translating the Spanish translation of Shadowgate 64, this was in the late 90s when different translations of games were extremely rare.

All around Mexico still gets a bunch of cool events from Nintendo, too bad the prices are crazy expensive which is why most people are now Xbox fans.

Both are uncensored, Season 1 of Sailor Moon has the full Japanese episodes, the senshi dying, all the works.

All Digimon seasons were uncensored and it makes me curious why you'd think S1 was a dub of the American show. The only thing they had in common is the westernized logo. It wasn't even like Sailor Moon where they changed names, Digimon was 100% translated from scratch.

I can confirm what Urgaybro says. In my case, and bear in mind I'm from a very small Laitn American town, you'd get current consoles like PlayStation or a N64 but you would be also playing famiclones left and right, because they had a stronger and cheaper library. So you never really "discarded" old gens, you kept finding new stuff to play.

I can confirm that virtually everyone in my town who grew up with vidya, even during the late 90's, is very knowledgeable in obscure NES shit for this reason.

Nintendo had a really strong presence in Brazil up until the GC, then it grew back with the Wii, and as of now it's more of a niche, but it's still there. The thing is Nintendo's refusal to properly establish themselves (manufacture and importing-wise) in the country often led to expensive prices, which led to independent resellers being the main source for any game other than the mainstream batch we'd get on stores, and unless the seller in question had connections or means to travel outside, they'd pay heavy prices on games (result of a government that's always feeding on public money through ridiculous customs and national taxes, with the 20+ year old premise of "incentive to value/production of national market").

The raped resellers then re-price the product inside the country, up to more than 100% the original value, in hopes of profiting back; and that goes for most games, even the greatest hits, which in theory are plentyful, so no expensive price is needed. So, while you get the newest Super Mario Bros. game in countries like Canada, US, Australia, etc, for about $60 bucks on launch day, in Brazil you'll have to pay something like $150-$200 for it. Of course, this is just an allegorical comparison, since both currencies are very different in application.

So in the end, it's a mix of negligency from Nintendo, the country's history of cock-blocking international market (the ones that don't interest the greater capital, at least), the nasty dollar conversion, and the inherent need to scalpel people that these factors inflicted on the common selling behaviour.

Not everything sucks like Nintendo products, though, Sony and Microsoft are well established here, which through the years created and fed an entire fat market of gamers, leading to really affordable prices since ps3 years, america-tier cheap, with exception of things we can't find here, such as Limited Run Games, and whatnot.

Inevitably these brands are favored due to their accessibility.

Do we have any statistics that show sales of consoles in latam?

I remember one from a while ago but I can't find it and IIRC it was Mexico that had the strongest sales, I doubt they're shunning the rest of latam just because Mexico is North America, it has to be legitimate sales being higher there.

I don't remember much of it. Basically the Sega guy were very aggressive about the Genesis being better than the SNES and the Nintendo guys were unprepared to answer.
What I remember was the Sega guys saying that the SNES was not a 16-bit system but rather a 12-bit system with "turbocharged" bits while the Genesis was a real 16-bit system. Gus replied with something equally dumb babbling about the FX chip.
Gus and the other Nintendo guys got so buttmad that in the next issue of Club Nintendo (Gus was involved in both Nintendomania and Club Nintendo) they dedicated like half the magazine to show how superior the SNES was.

Too bad the magazine was (and still is) shit.
I bought it for years but realized how bad it was 7 years ago. Their fanboyism and changing opinions happened too hard.
Also, they gave fake info and sometimes outright lies as "official".
I still remember when the Pokemon 2000 movie was a thing and their official info was "Lugia: it's supposed to be the fusion of Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres so go figure their power."

The worst offender of their quality IMO is that time when they actually used Vietnamese Crystal to talk about the game (Pic related). This proved two things: after hating on pirates and emulation so much, they showed their beliefs are as fake as their standards and that they just didn't care about quality content at all.

He actually HATES the Playstation Megaman games just for being on a Sony platform. His argument?:
"These new games look too flashy and overdesign in contrast to the more simple and better looking SNES games"

Also, I hated how the magazine started on hating games that THEY FUCKING PRAISED in the past, such as Mario Sunshine and Kirby's Air Ride.
Whether these games are good or not is debateable but I'm talking about how they don't stick to their own standards.

I think it had its high and lows. Of course it had a lot of fanboyism bullshit, it was the official Nintendo magazine, the same happened with official (or even unofficial) Sega and Playstation magazines.
So I don't think it's worth talking about "beliefs", it was always a corporate magazine, the editors had to answer to the actual Nintendo exec's demands.
If you read other vidya magazines of the time, you'll see there's a LOT of bullshit in them. That's why it's so fun to read old magazine articles, too.
But then I think Club Nintendo had one of the best designs in vidya magazines, they used a lot of original artwork, and each page or section in the magazine had its own distinct visual design to it. I think that's something that was lost in later issues of the early 00s, but the 90s club nintendo has some great layouts.
It also had the arcade section which talked about new titles, even if those would never come out on nintendo systems, that's cool. I remember first reading about Darkstalkers on club nintendo.
"El control de los profesionales" was also a nice section, I think they stopped doing these later on.

Yeah but there were points when they were fans but "fair" in a sense they also called the competition by their name and praised their good games.
Suddenly their respect turned into hate to the point of not even naming Sony or Playstation by their names and, what I consider the worst offender of blind fanboyism, was when they attacked Sega of "uncreative names".
Yeah, because Nintendo is the fucking king of creative names (pic related)

Besides this, which got so out of hand when Nintendo was losing the console war to the PS1 that they basically stopped even acknowledging the existence of rival consoles (with ridiculous results), the magazine had no quality control whatsoever. Typos everywhere (>>4492868 has a very obvious one), second grade level grammar, misinformation everywhere, contradictory statements ON THE SAME VOLUME (pic related), and what got me the most was the hypocrisy. They shat on emulators, spread constant misinfo about them and pirated goods, and at the same time it was obviously clear that by the GBC era they were exclusively using emulators and outright pirated roms for their articles.

I still have about 20 volumes for nostagia, and while useful when there wasn't any internet, it became outright unnecessary during the late 90's. The only thing it was good for was to have official artwork on a printed format. In hindsight, its content was mostly shit through and through.

Even without internet I knew when they lied of had misinformation but... dunno, I was getting videogame stuff monthly. I was like 14 then so I wasn't as judgemental as now.

For me, that magazine was like that friend who seemed pretty cool when you start hanging out with him, has lots of games he invites you to play and swears he gets them legit.

That's the best description of the magazine I've ever read (not that I've read a whole lot since nobody cares about it, but still).

On a slightly related note, what became of Club Nintendo MX? It switched to digital only, but I'm reading that they said they were going to keep printing it for distribution outside of Mexico? And how's the magazine now, anyway? The magazine "app" has terrible reviews.

>> No.4493906

>>4493894
Has fewer pages. Is more expensive. The content and review quality is even lower and are more fanboys than ever.
And basically they tell you shit everybody knows and what'd you expect.
For instance "In this issue we're covering Mario Odyssey. Best game ever."

The only thing it has going for it is its editorial and graphic design which I like a lot (reminds me to Ahoy from youtube) but is worse on every aspect.
I'm the same fucker hating on it from the previous posts, I just bought two issues of it because: one had a Metal Gear Solid 3 cover and another because it had a Bayonetta 2 poster. The magazine itself was a bad bonus for me.
If I hated them for shitting of Sega and their creativeness, one of those issues was worse.
They were attacking on KOF because "they release too many times the same game with minimal changes" and on the very same page praised Zelda which does the exact same thing (8 dungeons, get items, puzzles, uncreative plot of good vs. evil, and man, I love Zelda and even I can see that).
So they suffer of a serious case of "It's alright when Nintendo does it".

There was other time when a friend bought an issue and bursted into laughter when they were actually saying the Wii U was actually real good and just misunderstood.

I'm from Chile so that's how I still got those printed issues.
For YEARS the magazine costed $1500 chilean pesos which was pretty fair for a magazine with posters and 96 pages.

>> No.4493969

Axy and Spot were obviously Gus and Pepe. Ace and Ryo I'm pretty sure they were just hollow names that worked as their counterparts here.
God I miss Conejo, his section in the magazine was the best, I'm pretty sure he left them because he knew the magazine was shit.
Crow as I said a couple of posts above was alright. His film section was interesting.
Panteon started alright, The Graveyard was pretty interesting but as time passed he became an absurd fanboy to the point I instinctively ignored him.

I remember when they started the official magazine internet forum and I made a thread stating all the things I disliked about the magazine which I posted here and they erased me right away. Guess they weren't too fond of constructive criticism (I was super respectful back then, I wasn't the smug little fucker I am now).
And it sucked, I was mad with the magazine because I wanted it to be good, but the miracle never happened. Now it's too late. Printed magazines are a dying channel anyway.

As I said, if you read other company-centered magazines like Sega or PlayStation magazines, they also do fanboy shit like that and mock the competition. It was console war shitposting in printed form. That "sega is uncreative with their names" is pretty tame compared to what you might find in other magazines. Personally, I don't even remember reading about other systems on Club Nintendo, all the issues I have focus on nintendo and ignore any other companies, except for arcades. But again, I stopped reading the magazine around the start of 6th gen.
About their fuck ups and misinformation like on MM7, yeah, a lot of times they just guessed things (see they say "No creemos que salga"), probably were informed that the game was coming out close to the end of edition process and they added the bit of information at the last minute. It's something that happened on magazines, as I said, if you read other vidya magazines of the time, there's always some bullshit you can find.
Not defending them just saying the things they were guilty of was kind of a thing every other vidya magazine did, to varying degrees.

I dare say the reason the Playstation succeeded here is because it seems more like a true succesor to the SNES than the N64 was since both did pretty good in fighting, racing, jrpgs, soccer and arcade ports.

It wasn't released in Chile for some damned reason. I finally found a scan of the issue a few days ago and it was awful, but it still would have blown my mind as a kid. Televisa, I'll hate you forever.

Not exactly /vr/ but the GOAT magazine was Lazer, it had surprisingly accurate information about the anime industry, among other nerd stuff, for a pre-mainstream internet magazine and they got away showing asses and titties in an all ages magazine for some reason, Ivrea had to stop publishing the magazine when they got a cease and decease order from a Japanese company for using some show's pictures without permission.

Did Lazer got to other latin american countries?
I liked the early issues, it was a good magazine, useful for pre-internet times as you said. Although RAN was the true "cult" anime magazine, Lazer was more professional, and was actually aimed at the public that watched the anime that was on TV, not for the otaku who was hunting down fansubbed VHSs like RAN was.
Spain also had some good magazines, like Kame (and their special books), Dokan and Minami (I mainly bought those because of the CD-ROMs, they were cramped with stuff).
The guys from RAN later made Nuke, which was also pretty good.

Yes at least here in Costa Rica, it wasn't the most mainstream magazine though it was only was available in a shop specialized in magazines called La Casa de las Revistas, now out of business as far as I know. In said shop they used to sell international magazines in english some that I recall checking out were Metal Hammer and Newtype USA, never heard about RAN until now

That's pretty cool, yeah that's how I also got my spanish magazines, in specialized stores, one of which is now out of business as well, I got some japanese Newtype issues there. At one point, around 1999 and 2000, anime got so big that even regular street magazine kiosks had Dokan and Minami issues.
RAN was never sold outside Argentina, and only the last couple numbers had a more professional edition, it was a black and white fanzine for most of its life. Nuke was more professional and edited by the same editorial that made Next Level and Extreme PC, 2 late 90s/2000s vidya magazines that were also popular here.
