Does anybody still like realistic racing games? I'll admit that Gran Turismo is pretty great, but do you prefer it to games like Mario Kart, Crash Team Racing, F Zero, etc? What's your ideal racer?

Sega Rally was my jam. I like both sonewhat but overall I like Forza more than Mario Kart.

Some of the most fun racing is unironically Just Cause 2 because of Sega Rally.

>> No.4492593

I prefer more realistic over arcade unless it's Wipeout but I haven't played many /vr/ ones. Which would you recommend? Grid and Dirt Rally are my favourites.

>> No.4492603

I don't have much experience with racing games but out of what I have played, my ideal at the moment is stuff like SNES F-Zero. It's fast, fun in quick bursts, its stylish and it's got great music. I like Outrun and Top Gear as well.
And Burnout 3.

Burnout, the racer where the rubberbanding is for the player instead of the AI.
But for /vr/ purposes, Gran Turismo 2.

I just noticed all my favourite arcade racers are from the sixth gen.
Probably because they are a dying genre since then.
Anyway my retro choices are F-Zero X, Wipeout XL and Carmageddon, the latter I see very rarely mentioned here.

My man. I remember using the option to remove gore because I was afraid my parents wouldn't let me play it. (they didn't care about this kind of thing, I just had a pure mind and felt it was wrong to run over people. But then came Grand Theft Auto and...)

Oh, and I love top-down view racing, like Micro Machines, and I spent more time running around town than completing missions in GTA 1 and 2. Not really retro now, I used to play a top-down racing game called GeneRally. Really simple 3d graphics and had a track editor.

the mechanics are almost like a fighting game in the sense of inputs and different viable styles. the flying mechanics are sick too and nothing is faster

realistic racers are fun on dates and being able to lean into turns on bikes in the arcade is fun but it gets old fast

Always wished R4 was a better game. It's absolutely gorgeous, the music is stellar, but handling is absurdly weird by RR standards, and unlocking the bajillion cars is fucking awful. Every time I play it, it feels like they focused on other aspects than how it handled.

>>4492640
it hurts
at least RR2PSP is brilliant, even if it's got absolutely ludicrous shit and cars basically don't have any real turning power at all outside of drifts
one of the goofiest things was that if you had absolutely zero idea how to enter a given corner properly, you could just drift -- even if you're facing the wrong way, the spline based system will pull you along the track without crashing for the duration of it
the game rewards you properly for doing the corner properly, but it's hilariously forgiving

The physics are kinda loose like Sega Rally, but they're also quite well done and you can really feel the weight of the car, difference between front wheel/rear wheel vehicles etc. Then on top of that It's a huge open world to drive in and you can just drive for ages.

disagree with r4 control, it controls the easiest of any rr game to much so imo thus rage is my fav. Agree the having to finish in certain positions to unlock cars is completely stupid though.

Me too, R4 can only be played with a spreadsheet to track down which cars you still need to unlock and which races you need to intentionally lose. Fucking Namco.

This is why there is an arcade mode in the orange era of GT games. The arcade mode isn't just aimless quick races, there's an actual progression path.

>> No.4496351

>>4492794
No, both of those games are ported from the original Outrun 2. Outrun 2006 is a straight port of the arcade update Outrun 2 SP, which heavily altered the physics. Outrun Online Arcade backports the new tracks added for SP, even though it doesn't carry over the physics changes.

Probably MSR and NFS PU are the best examples - they are not realistic, but they do excellent job with all the joy of driving an actual sport car properly translated to video game.

Playing GT2, Colin 2.0 and TOCA WTC made me realise that physics in those games is better than in many modern racing games.
In fact physics in GT2 remind me of GT6 a lot, since GT4 PD introduced some bullshit input filter which would reduce steering angle based on speed AND grip levels resulting on on-the-rail driving.

Also, GT2 is one of the best GT there is simply because there are more 80's and 90's cars that are fun to drive.
Later GT series dropped them and replaced with modern day, 2k+ crapboxes which, are not so fun to drive or look at.

Pro tip, if you playing on epsxe, use Lillypad 0.12 or later.
You have two options there Deadzone and Skip Dead zone.

Normally if you remove deadzone in plugin control panel GT2 will still have deadzone by default but, if you use skip deadzone in plugin and set it to around 200 for turning left and right, you get a game which reacts instantly to your slightest input.

With that plugin you can even chose NecGon option in plugin CP and set sensitivity to very low (250 I think)
Just try setting various values then going to Rage Racer control settup screen and try slowly turning left and right, it will skip to the next screen when you reach the threshold, if it reaches the threshold too soon you know to reduce control sensitivity in plugin menu.
In any case, you can play Rage Racer with this plugin which earlier reacted to NecGon like it was a digital pad.
